No shade but how are we supposed to “leave” it if it’s still happening? I myself as a queer person and other queer people that I know (that are all black) have had trauma associated with the church, and have experienced discrimination from people our age in school or the work place. My partner teaches at a high school and hears homophobic+transphobic rhetoric from his students all the time, and a majority of them use “God” or “the Bible said so”. It just seems like a major generalization to assume that faith-based homophobia is only older folks when I see/hear it from younger people just as much, especially in regards to an artist like Lil Nas X, bc those older people were never the target audience. It’s easy to assume where hate is being placed when you may not be experiencing it, that’s all.

As a Florida native, Florida is thriving. Conservatives are getting exactly what they want out of Florida. Transplant numbers are up in a major way and a lot of it has to do with conservatism as well as real estate and retail. Disney is a factor, yes, of course, but people come to Florida (especially from northeastern states) because it's way more affordable, no state tax, weather, shopping, tourism etc. The GDP just keep growing despite the fact that there are people with literal shit for brains running its government. Its poor and marginalized people will continue to suffer (and even then theres a demographic of the poor population who still fuck with right wing shit because of things like caste, racism and evangelicalism) but otherwise, people will continue to pour into the state because everything is more expensive elsewhere and also, conservatives like that shit. I think folks under estimate how conservative and bible belt a major part of the population in Florida is. I also think that unless you live in non major cities in Florida, you'll also underestimate how much of the young population also holds a lot of right wing, conservative, evangelical values. It's economy has does nothing bust consistently grow over the years and let the folks tell it, jobs is another reason why the state is so attractive for so many people. We have always been a state with a HUGE population of people who are not actually natives to the state because of the aforemtioned reasons, and I don't think that's going to change any time soon, especially if it means people can save a buck by living there instead of some of the alternative places.

Democrats cannot get much done because of obstructionist Republicans. Dems only have a 1 vote majority in the Senate, and the Republicans control the House. Not much can happen when Republicans vote against everything a Democrat proposes, regardless of how much it would help even their own state. The Republican-controlled house only passed 27 bills in 2023... The average is 300-600 bills per year. Democrats have passed soo much good stuff over the years when they have had control of the House, that didn't make it into law because of Republican intransigence and the filibuster in the Senate. Dems need more seats in Congress to be able to get stuff done without the Republicans. Many of the problems affecting people's lives can only be addressed through legislation from Congress. That legislation will never be passed if we keep giving Republicans control over Congress every other election cycle.

I think it’s the historical reliance on the incumbent advantage that both parties still hold their committees to that prevents Democrats from running a new candidate. Its a bit like he won once he’s their strongest option for winning again; so running a new candidate when the current Democratic president is in office and has not stated that they will not run again is informally going against the DNC. (It’s the same thing that happened in last election tbh so why Democrats aren’t learning from republican mistakes is beyond me). Once again i am sat, this came right in time for my lunch break! A lil story abt Lil Nas X, one of his producers is the son of my alma mater’s former president. I was in college when he was blowing up and she was in hot water on campus bc shes very much one of those respectability politics older black folk and had sorta disappeared for a week or so. Lo and behold, she was posted up at the Grammys with Lil Nas X looking like a First Lady 😭 we were petitioning him to come perform at our campus but bc its technically a Christian school, he didnt want to. I think his religious trauma is something tht goes just as far back into who he is as an artist as his trolling/being on stan twitter. If he works through some of that, fully develops his brand and artisty, he could really take it!!! Because the hendonist thing is been there, done that.

Okay thoughts now that I’m done watching; It’s hard to see Lil Nas X solely rely on controversy to get streams because he can be so much more than that. I understood playing the game during the montero era because he was still making a name for himself, but now I wish the focus would shift to the quality of the music instead of the scandal. He CAN do it. Montero was a good album with good visuals and an organized era. He’s proven he can make great music and even the new song is kinda catchy, but it’s disappointing because it feels like he’s not believing in himself as much as I would hope, and that’s hard to see as a gay man myself (I could be fully wrong because I don’t know him lol, but that’s just my perception). Maybe I’m saying that out of exhaustion because 9 times out of 10 the “don’t disrespect my religion” conversation feels like there’s more to it than just being defensive of religion (*homophobia*) and that’s tiring to have to sit through every time, but yeah that’s where I’m at. A great watch :)
