Do you have a book recommendation for me? I read like 1-2 a month so I could always use some recommendations.

What is says on the tin, if you recently liked a book send it it, if you read a book a decade ago and still think about it send that in too!

As I like vampire stories, here are a few I’ve enjoyed and am enjoying. First the pair The Vampire Girl Next Door and The Vampire Girl in London by Richard Arbib (https://thevampiregirlnextdoor.com/) plus here’s a collection of shorts in Erotic Female Vampire Stories vol I by Shay Slinger. Happy summer!☀️😎

Coolhand

I lovedddd legends and lattes so fuckin much

Dungarees

Why sure: Travis Baldree - Legends & Lattes Fantasy, lightweight & wholesome on a small scale, like the equivalent of a cozy-blanket-and-hot-chocolate in book form. Benjamin Stevenson - Everyone in My Family Has Killed Someone A funny & very clever murder mystery. I usually hate it when any author talks right to us (and there are times that still gets OTT), but it's surprisingly bearable, and the plot genuinely works under regular murder-mystery rules even/despite how much he talks about those rules in the process. Stuart Turton - The 7½ Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle Sort of sci-fi-ish. The setting is perfectly ordinary, but the plot is a mind-bending Chinese puzzle box that still doesn't leave out a little real heart.

Fix

I’m reading 4th wing. First in a 3 book series

If you have any interest in horror/weird fiction, Laird Barron's The Imago Sequence stuck with me and made me a fan. Particularly, "Procession of the Black Sloth", "Hallucigenia, "Parallax" and, "The Imago Sequence". It's a book of short stories. If short stories are a turn-off, try The Croning by Barron. They're more creepy-weird than "horror". Good for truly not knowing where any of it is going. Pleasurable disorientation.

I don't suppose you have a Goodreads or something similar? I feel if you read that many books you've probably read 99% of recommendations. Either way my recommendations are: Novels: Childhood's End - This is about an alien invasion where the aliens don't want to fight to take over, but are advanced enough to be able to make any resistance redundant, so the tension is placed on how long can the human spirit can resist if you side against the aliens. Has also my personal favourite twist in the beginning of the second act. Good chance you've read this as it is a sci-fi classic. Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - It's been a few years but it's a classic and a classic for a reason. I don't remember a huge amount but I remember how it made me feel and I thought it was very funny and just really enjoyed it. I do suspect you've probably already read this though. Biographies/memoirs: Abroad in Japan - a 10 year memoir from YouTuber Chris Broad who moved to Japan as a foreign language teacher who then subsequently spent the last 10 years in the country. He may be a YouTuber but the book mostly focusses on his time as a teacher and adjusting to the culture. The writing style is very fluid and easy to process so it's quite a light read imo. I got my dad to read it who knows nothing about YouTube and cares little for Japan and he enjoyed it with the dry perspective of the writer. From Truant to Anime Screenwriter - My Path to “Anohana” and “The Anthem of the Heart” - Memoirs from Mari Okada, a Japanese screenwriter for anime. She is well known for writing melancholy and the ability to make an audience cry. She's also famous for being extremely anti-social and a "hikikomori" in highschool (someone who stops attending and hides in their room). I found it fascinating reading about her perspective and how she dug herself out of this hole to become a very successful writer. (unsure if there is a physical copy of the book, I bought mine off the website "Bookwalker"). Manga: My Lesbian Experience With Loneliness: I am still reading this for what that's worth but it's essentially the author drawing up her life experiences in an extremely awkward, relatable, and hilarious way. As a manga it's very light reading and quick to get through. Goodnight Punpun - A story about a boy named "Punpun" and his life growing up. It's vey poignant, and gets introspective and melancholic. I can't really describe it in a way that does it justice. Nana and Kaoru - Normally wouldn't be so open to recommend something smutty but hey when in Rome haha. A BDSM manga in which two teens fall into a BDSM relationship. It has some good character work on why these characters need BDSM to help compensate for something in their lives and in their relationships with one another. I'd say it's quite a healthy and informative look at BDSM while also being smutty if that's your thing. I realise my tastes are quite restricted to either "the classics" or more Japanese-focussed, so apologies if the first topic is ground you've covered and if the second is just of zero interest to you. I wasn't going to recommend this much but as I started writing I kept remembering another series c: I could have also recommended some self-help type books but YMMV and all the books I read and loved as a kid probably don't hold up in the way I remember.

I read Yiddish Policeman's Union like 15 years ago and I didn't find anything with the same dry humour until I read Leviathan Wakes. Both are pretty good!

sanguinesomnambulist

I really enjoyed An Unkindness of Magicians by Kat Howard. It's a dark urban fantasy about magicians dueling for control of the magical world.

Kelly Thomsen

My favorite sci-fi book series is the Darth Bane trilogy, which tells the story behind the beginning of the Sith's Rule of Two philosophy. My favorite fantasy (and more risque) book series is The Hollows AKA the Rachel Morgan series. It's a series of mystery stories told from the point of view of a modern day witch who works as a bounty hunter, alongside a living vampire and a potty-mouth pixy, to catch supernatural beings who commit supernatural/magical crimes.

TJ Hassmer

If you like fantasy, Melissa Caruso's Swords & Fire trilogy is pretty good, and her sequel trilogy Rooks & Ruin is absolutely fantastic.

Crow

I loved and then there were none by Agatha Christie. It’s a thriller/mystery novel!

Ted

Oooo yes I *loved* American Gods

Dungarees

Neil Gayman's American Gods is my favorite; Critical Failure's early novels are good, and so is 'A Dark Lord's Handbook.'

I have been reading lesbian books ( shocker) If you like a cool and standoff sort of lady that warms up. Breaking character by Lee Winter If you want one with size rep, disability, physical rep. And fake dating and angst Make You Mine This Christmas: 'The queer Christmas rom-com I've been waiting for' LAURA KAY If you want a medical one that is cute, sweet, deals with grief and how a person grows bachelorette number 12 by JAE Also I would recommend "just for show" by JAE because I have fond memories of it

nanosphere05

If you like nonfiction and swimming I recommend Waterlog: a swimmer's journey through Engeland. Written by the deceased naturalist Roger Deakin. It feels like a summer read and has a sense of adventure for the wider world from when you are a little kid on an outdoors camp. It might be a bit dry for you, pun intended😉

WhiskyHowl of Flanders

Simon Sinek, Start with Why, Leaders Eat Last, Find Your Why, or The Infinite Game Stephen King - anything really however Dark Tower series, Cell, or Dreamcatcher standout to me Dungeon Crawler Carl, specifically the audio book by soundbooththeater https://soundbooththeater.com/shop/audiobooks/dungeon-crawler-carl/

TomBoom

Of nonfiction I've read mostly memoirs/biographies so I love those but I'm also open to other nonfiction!

Dungarees

How do you feel about nonfiction?

A book series I loved in highschool was Tunnels by Brian Williams. I guess you could say its like Harry Potter or Percy Jackson. Teenage protagonist in a real world setting but dealing with a fantasy plot. Its a 6 or 7 book series and definitely my favorite

Two_Hoots88

It’s actually part of a series. The Winter King, Excalibur and Enemy of God. Excellent series.

kevin whisnant
