It's interesting that the Doctor is Irish, and the Irish people have been somewhat mistreated by the English for centuries. There's that part where the Doctor is being a bit sassy and Jack says to him, "Now you're talking like an Irishman" and the Doctor's reply is "Yeah, I am an Irishman." The Doctor is the only one who speaks honestly to Jack Aubrey. About the kids on the ship, some of them are sons of lords. So they're being trained to be officers. Think of it as a really early internship. At the end you mention that it sets up a sequel. So this is based on a book series, so they would have made another movie but this film didn't make enough money for the studio to make a sequel. But it was nominated for best picture. It's a shame, not enough people saw it in theaters, but those who did loved the movie.
