My personal favorite films of the ST franchise are II and IV... I would place III as a transition episode into film IV. I realize that ST II didn't impress you, but the success of that film enabled the following films with increased budgets that upgraded the production quality.

Here are my observations after seeing this YT-edited video: * Klingon is a warrior race. Honorable death is glorious and is preferred over even living if can't be a true warrior. * The bonding of the trio (Kirk, Spock, and McCoy) is what most fans treasure, and most of that came from TOS series. The bantering between Bones and Spock are real fun throughout the series. * Enterprise is considered a character to the fans, so its death in ST III hit just as hard as Spock's death in ST II. Fans in the movie theater cried the same. Also because Trek is considered a future possibility of humanity and therefore attracted a lot of engineers and scientists working in the aerospace industry and governments (including NASA). The ship and its travel near Earth, planet orbits, and voids of space are very much marveled. * Glad you like ST III. While even numbered films get excellent reviews and ratings (up to VIII), many odd numbered films are very good and loved as well, but just not universally. Look forward to see how you rank after seeing ST IV and then of course up to ST VI.
