Great reaction Mary. As an old star trek fan when this movie came out it was bit of a disappointment. Slow pace and a special effects showcase. Next one will be better. ❤️

So you're Swedish? Which Hollywood video? I knew the one in Hollywood. My career was marketing videos/DVD, first at MGM then Disney (Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, Toy Story etc.). Yes if you re-view Star Trek: The Motion Picture from a historic perspective you appreciate it more. I knew the Nimoy family well through Leonard's daughter Julie who went to my high school then in junior college. Leonard not as much. Not that many know he was an awesome stage actor. I have pictures of him, Julie and her brother Adam I took, They are, prominently featured in the documentary "Remembering Leonard Nimoy" available on Amazon Prime Video. The made-up fight between Star Wars fans and Trek fans is silly. You can enjoy them both. Jerry Goldsmith vs. John Williams? Apples and oranges but I'll take Williams. FYI Harrison Ford crashed his plane on Penmar Golf course 250 yards from my house. I was home and rushed to the scene. Engine cut out. He was trying to return back to the airport and crashed just short of a sand trap, Han Solo. Great pilot! Julie's daughter Dani runs "ShopLLAP" (live long and prosper) where you can buy Spock merchandise online.

I first watched this film when I was a teenager and I also found the pace to be a bit slow in places. Part of my initial reaction to this movie is because I was not a Trekkie. I had seen episodes of the original series including the cartoon, but I didn’t get it. “Star Wars” was more my style and I loved it instantly. Fast forward to 1990. I’m 18 and I start working for Hollywood Video. My manager is this guy named Rob. Rob is a few years older than me and he’s a great guy. He’s also a huge “Star Trek” fan. And he’s the one who got me to watch this film again and the subsequent movies and enjoy them. I think it helps if you put this film into historical perspective. Science fiction movies back then were mostly dystopian tales where the world was ending, dogs and cats loved together, mass hysteria. And “2001: A Space Odyssey” was considered the model for future science fiction movies. That movie plods along in a similar way to “Star Trek: The Motion Picture”. What I discovered is that “Star Wars” is a saga about good and evil. “Star Trek” is about teamwork and groups of individuals from different backgrounds who work together as one. They travel to new worlds with the goal of discovering new places and their communities to try and get along peacefully. “Star Wars” is more like an old-fashioned morality play and ultimately is a father-son tale about the redemption of Anakin Skywalker. A few years ago after my ex and I broke up, I decided to watch all “Star Trek” movies again for the first time in years. I really enjoyed them including the first one. Jerry Goldsmith’s score is phenomenal. One of the greatest film composers ever. And I am so grateful to Rob for turning me on to this film series and many others. I learned so much from Rob who was a great boss. Live long and prosper. 🖖
