300 never had a 3D release homie, but it’s companion film 300 Rise of an Empire was in 3D and converted some scenes from this movie since they happen side by side… And Rise of an Empire is SUPER underrated with Eva Green. She’s FANTASTIC in it.

2025-04-02 05:49:23 +0000 UTCI saw this in 3D when it first came out and it still stands as one of the best cinema experiences. That said the best way to enjoy this movie is not knowing the history. The reason they wear their speedos is because it’s based on a comic and the comic is taking inspiration from Greek pottery. Most of the gross sexual stuff is made up by the comic’s author, Frank Miller. The ephors weren’t inbreed old men they were the elected rulers of Sparta. Leonidas on the other hand was the product of his father marrying his niece and Leonidas also married his niece… the aristocrats. The oracle scene is pure fantasy. Sparta had two kings but their job was to act as generals of the army and Leonidas was chosen as war leader by all the Greeks. No one really knows why they only sent 300 Spartans but it was probably because of the religious festivals. Xerxes wasn’t a god-king who ruled over an army of demonic monsters, he was a bureaucrat who built highways and cities. The film wants to show the clash of civilisations between the enlightened Europeans and the superstitious East but it’s really the opposite. Who’s throwing babies off the cliff? To the extent that there is such a thing as “Western Civilisation” it descends more from the Persians, who were the model for Alexander’s Empire and then the Roman Empire, than it does from the Spartans. Also, the reason the Spartans could afford to be full time soldiers is because their whole society was based on slavery. There were 900 Helots in this battle, three slaves for every Spartan warrior. If you want to see a great Lena Heady movie I’d recommend either Dredd (which is even more of an action movie than 300) or Imagine Me and You (a delightful romcom). The best Gerard Butler movie is RocknRolla.
