IMDD CHAPTER 295

Eva could only resign with a sigh as she slipped off her broken heels. Her hesitation wasn't really about accepting help from him. It was because of her concern for Gage's feelings. Eva knew how she would feel if the roles were reversed—if she saw Gage in a similarly situation with another woman, she knew jealousy would rear its head, regardless of the context. Moreover, she just didn’t want to cause even a small misunderstanding between her and Gage when he just returned to her. And that was why she instantly rejected Calix’s offer to carry her.

She also knew that her, wearing Calix’s shoes could still stir some jealousy, considering she would feel jealous herself if she saw another woman wearing Gage’s coat. However, she found herself without alternatives at the moment. And so, she told herself that the Gage, who was waiting for her at home right now was the calm and understanding husband of her.

And so, she wore Calix’s oversized shoes. She then made an attempt to walk, her movements awkward due to the size mismatch. When Calix stood up, she turned to him, appreciating his kindness. "You really are such a good person, Cal…" she remarked as they began their walk.

Trying her best to walk normally in shoes far too large, Eva was acutely aware of how comical she must have looked. But Calix maintained his usual stoic demeanor, his gaze fixed ahead, his expression inscrutable. "Bad people can be gentlemen too," he casually replied.

"Well, true. But you're not just being a gentleman. You're also selfless. Just like what you're doing right now. I believe that selfless people are good people," Eva responded, trying to highlight the positivity in his actions.

"I'm not selfless. At all," Calix replied, dismissing her compliment with a straightforwardness that left no room for debate.

Eva could only raise an eyebrow and let out another quiet sigh.

Changing the subject, she broached a more personal topic. "Oh, and I’ve been meaning to talk to you about this, but my husband is back now, so… I can no longer go on dates with you."

Calix's response was a simple nod, an acknowledgment devoid of surprise or emotion. His acceptance of her words was as straightforward as everything else about him,

"Will you be in trouble? I mean, isn't Mr. Deluca pressuring you to settle down?" Eva inquired, concern lacing her words.

"He is," Calix admitted briefly.

"You should really try to date someone seriously, you know? I could help you find someone if you'd like," Eva suggested, her tone light, accompanied by a hopeful grin.

"I'll think about it," was Calix's noncommittal reply.

Suddenly, he halted his steps, prompting Eva to look at him with concern. "What's wrong?" she asked, peering down at his feet. "Did you step on something?"

"No. But I'm..." Calix paused for a few seconds. "I'm tired," he finally said.

“…”

Somehow, his response was something Eva never expected at all. In fact, those words were almost unbelievable because well… was this man still the Calix Deluca she knew? Why did she feel like he’s really kind of weird tonight?

"I think I'll wait here instead. Your house is nearby, right?" he broke the awkward silence.

"Oh… it's actually just right there. Are you sure you don't want to just come along?"

"No thanks. I'll stay here and wait for your driver," Calix declined, his decision firm.

Eva could only blink at him, still momentarily taken aback. Was he genuinely tired, or was there another reason for his sudden stop… wait… could it be that he really stepped onto something and he was just too proud to admit it? This guy…

"Alright, I'll send someone as soon as possible.” Eva finally gave in. “Don't move, and wait right here, okay?"

He nodded in agreement, and with that, Eva walked away in haste. She needed to immediately send someone to come and give Calix a ride home!
