Updates

Hi guys! Happy Easter and I hope y’all are well. First of all, I’m so sorry for my lack of updates last week and this week. I am actually on a vacation but don’t worry, I’m about to go back home. Been home-bound since my last vacation at the end of November last year so I’m treating myself a two weeks vacation before I’ll be home-bound again for months. Yes, I don’t go out of the house because well… I never liked going out 🤪. I can stay in my home for months and I won’t even miss the outside world. I only go out if the destination is a place I like and unfortunately, these places are always far.

I took my tablet with me to write while on vacation but my mind is not cooperating with me sadly. This is also one reason why I don’t go out, because I somehow cannot concentrate and write if I’m not home. TT Sometimes, I can force myself but most of the times, I will end up writing something I’m not satisfied with. This time, I haven’t written anything and just edited chapters of IMDD in my spare times because good news guys! I am planning to print the book 1 of IMDD novel soon and I’ll be giving away signed copies to loyal patrons! The editing is already in the process and I’ll make sure that the wait wont take too long!

And of course, once I’m home, I’ll resume all novel updates again especially IMDD NOVEL and HDG novel. I promise to release more chapters starting next month. As always, thank you for your understanding, love and support!

Sincerely, Kazzen ~

P.s. took this photo bellow today. I’d love to have my characters to have a chill walk or ride a bike in these riversides. I don’t know who own that bike but it was a lovely prop ^^

IMDD CHAPTER 299

Eva’s contented sigh echoed in the room as Gage’s gentle yet firm hands met her skin. He massaged her shoulders, kneading the knots of tension in a way as though he was indeed more than just knowledgeable.

"Is the pressure okay?" he asked softly.

"It's perfect," Eva murmured. “And you’re so… good. Who taught you to be this good? Hm?”

“The guy in the video I watched while tucking our princess to bed…” he admitted.

“Why am I not even surprise anymore?” Eva could only smile before she closed her eyes again at the feel of his fingers dancing along her back, tracing paths of relaxation that delved deep into her muscles, coaxing the stress and weariness to fade away.

His hands moved with confidence, guided by the reactions of Eva's body, each sigh and soft murmur a signpost to her areas of tension. He took his time, ensuring no spot was neglected.

As the massage continued, Eva found herself drifting in a serene space between wakefulness and sleep, her mind quiet, her heart full.

"How do you feel?" he asked.

"Like I'm the luckiest woman in the world," Eva replied, smiling widely.

In the soft glow of the room, as the massage continued, Gage's gentle suggestion broke the silence. "If you’re sleepy, go ahead, darling."

“I don’t want to… I want to at least give you a reward… for all… these…” she replied even if she truly felt so sleepy now due to the amazing relaxation he made her feel.

“I didn’t do all these just to get a reward… I did this because I want to pamper you, Eva. So listen to me, and just let your body relax and fall asleep, okay?”

“God… you’re so sweet…” she uttered and just like that, before Gage could finish the massage, Eva succumbed to the blissful world of slumber.

When she woke up, she’s in the bed, alone.

The morning sun was already high. She felt so revitalized. So good. She remembered all of last night’s activities, and the first thing she did was look at her fingers. And there it was, her ring, gleaming so beautifully.

With the brightest smile on her face, Eva rose and soon went out of their room. She stopped by Gigi’s room but their princess wasn’t there anymore.

Eva headed downstairs and the moment she smelled a delicious aroma, she headed straight to the kitchen. And there she saw them, her husband and daughter, cooking happily together, wearing a matching apron printed with ducks and bears.

Leaning against the threshold, Eva dreamily watched them with a smile on her face, before she lifted her phone and snapped a photo of them.

Gage lifted his eyes, and when their eyes met, he immediately walked towards her. He guided her towards the table as Gigi animatedly greeted her good morning.

And with that, the trio had their breakfast, their little family filled with warmth, and love.

After their meal, Eva insisted to be the one to wash dishes. Gaia asked to go water the plants in the backyard, and when Eva nodded, the little girl rushed outside.

Of course, Gage followed the little girl and helped her set up the hose she would use to water the plants.

“Daddy… you can go help mommy instead. I can do this on my own because it’s very easy.” Gigi grinned at him, making Gage smile back.

For a few moments, Gage stood there, subtly looking around, before he finally patted his little girl’s head and said, “Alright, I’ll go help your mom so we can come here and join you in watering your plants.”

“Okay, daddy.”

Eva was already about to finish washing dishes when Gage approached her. His arms wound their way around her waist before he settled his chin lovingly on the blade of her shoulder.

“I’m guessing Gigi sent you away to come help me.” Eva guessed, smiling.

“She did. Our princess is just so sweet.”

“Like father like daughter.”

Gage chuckled softly.

"You don’t know how glad I am that she took more of your personality than mine, Gage," Eva confessed with a gentle smile.

"She’d be perfect anyway if she took after your fierceness. And maybe she’s got that tigress-like personality she took from you. She’ll probably let it out once she grows up.”

"Which, now that I realize it, isn’t a bad thing, is it? Being too sweet in this world filled with predators is definitely dangerous," Eva mused, her gaze thoughtful.

"Don’t worry, darling. We’re going to teach her well to make sure that when she grows up, she’ll be a strong girl. Just like you," Gage assured her.

Eva finally turned to face him fully, her hands reaching up to cradle his face. "Why are you getting sweeter and sweeter by the day, hm, Gage Acheron? I’m afraid I’m going to have chronic diabetes very soon."

He smiled, a smile so sweet and adorable it nearly melted Eva right there and then.

"Darling… I have something to ask you," he whispered, pressing a gentle kiss to her hand.

Eva's eyes sparkled with curiosity, a silent prompt for him to continue.

“Can I…” he started, hesitating for a moment as he pressed her palm on the side of his face. “Can I abduct you and Gaia?”

Eva blinked.

“Where are you bringing us?” she asked after a moment of silence.

"It’s a secret for now," he replied, a mysterious glint in his eyes.

“For how… many days?”

“Twenty-five days.”

Twenty-five days… The number echoed in Eva's mind. She quickly did the math, combining the days that had passed since their reunion with the twenty-five days he proposed. They totaled thirty days. It was the same duration of their deal that day she first entered this house.

“Of course,” Eva finally replied, “as long as the kidnapper is you… I’m definitely willing. I’m sure, Gigi won’t mind too.”

IMDD CHAPTER 298

Lying together on the soft grass, Eva and Gage both gazed up at the vast, star-filled sky. The candles around them were dying one after another, each light quietly succumbing to the night. But they remained right there in each other’s arms, cocooned in the warmth of their embrace, content in the silence and the beauty of the moment.

"Thank you for tonight, Gage… for this…" Eva uttered, her eyes shimmering as she lifted her hand, the gemstone gleaming in the dark. "For everything…"

Turning her gaze towards him, she continued. "Thank you for coming back to me… to us…"

Gage tightened his hold, pulling her closer, his lips finding her forehead in a tender kiss. "And thank you for waiting for me, darling. Words cannot begin to describe how much I’m… happy right now."

Feeling his heartfelt words, Eva tightened her embrace, her own happiness echoing his. "Me too… I’m so… so happy…"

"I will do everything to… keep this happiness last forever, Eva. I promise." Gage's voice was firm, filled with a promise as timeless as the stars above them.

Eva gently pulled back, her eyes locking with Gage's. With a nod full of conviction, she whispered, "I believe in you, Gage." Her hand tenderly caressed his face. "Don't worry… everything will be alright. From now on, we'll be together… forever." Her smile was radiant, her eyes alight with hope.

Gage returned her smile with equal warmth. "Yes… forever…" he affirmed, and in that perfect moment, they sealed their vows with a kiss, under the expansive, starry night sky.

Bride-like, Gage carried Eva until they reached the bathroom.

He gently placed her down and then without a word, he removed his shirt.

The dim light of the bathroom caressed his skin, casting shadows that played across the contours of his taught muscles. Just watching this man undressing himself was truly a sight to behold… a sight she just knew she would never ever get tired of!

Unexpectedly, the male god before her stopped after his tops were gone. She had honestly thought he was going to take off everything before her. Did he want her to continue? She wouldn’t mind at all though.

But then, just when she was about to move to take off the rest of his clothes, Gage reached out and began to undress her. He was deliberate, tender, as if he loved what he was doing. As if he was savoring every little act of this task.

Once she was fully naked, Eva was a little surprised when Gage did not lead her down the path she had been anticipating. Instead of bending to kiss her, he bent and lifted her with ease once again, and then placed her gently into the tub.

Eva bit her lip to hide her smile as the warm water welcomed her.

“Lie down, darling, I'll wash your hair," Gage said and Eva did as he said.

“You're tired from work. So just relax and let me pamper you…" he added and she closed her eyes, a smile playing on her lips as Gage began to gently massage shampoo into her hair.

He also began to tell her everything that happened while she’s in her work. He told her about their cooking moments with Gaia, until he sent and picked her up from school. The rhythmic motions of his fingers were soothing, and as he shared her about their lunch escapade, especially about the French fries, laughter and warmth filled the room, drawing her deeper into a state of blissful contentment.

When she was done, Eva immediately offered to wash Gage’s hair too. But he declined, smiling.

"I already took a bath, darling. And tonight… I'm set to do nothing but pamper you," Gage said and Eva could only bite her lip, happy beyond measure.

Gage patted Eva’s hair dry with such tenderness that Eva felt cherished down to her very soul. He then proceeded to dry her hair, the blow dryer's warm air whispering through the strands as he worked with methodical gentleness.

Eva watched him through the mirror, her heart swelling with love. The reflection she was admiring captured more than just the physical act of him combing her hair; it mirrored something more… so much more….

And it appeared that her incredibly thoughtful husband, had yet another surprise up his sleeve. "Would you want a massage?" he offered.

"You know how to do massage too?!"

He responded with a confident smirk. "Your hubby is a fast learner," he boasted, the glint in his eyes betraying his eagerness to please her in every way possible.

"What a devil," Eva remarked, half-teasing, half-admiring the man before her.

Gage's laughter filled the room, a sound that warmed Eva's heart. Then, in a smooth motion, he scooped her up in his arms once again, ready to continue their evening of pampering.

“But Gage… it's already late… you've done a lot the whole day too. So if you’re tired—"

"Thanks for the concern, darling, but consider these the perks of having a devil of a husband."

IMDD CHAPTER 297

Eva paused as she crossed the threshold. The enchanting sight of a path lit by softly flickering candles had her momentarily rooted to the spot.

Her eyes gleamed as the warm, inviting glow coaxed a smile onto her lips.

Gently, she pushed the door closed behind her, sealing herself within this now figuratively and literally magical place.

As she began to walk along the candlelit path, Eva’s smile remained, never fading. Her heart had already started beating wildly. And the feelings that were filling her entire being the more steps she took forward was just… oh god… almost overwhelmingly surreal.

This moment… this feeling… This must be how the brides felt when they walk down the aisle to marry the man they loves beyond measure, right?

Eva had attended few weddings in the past seven years. And every time, most especially during her friend’s wedding, she had found herself imagining what it would be like to walk in an aisle to reach Gage… what it would be like to stand at the altar with him, to exchange vows in a place as beautiful and heartfelt as this.

Now here she was… She never expected this surprise. She couldn’t even begin to describe all the feelings within her anymore.

When she finally emerged to the open garden and her gaze found him, her feet stopped moving. There he was, in the middle of the open garden, standing in front of the fountain behind him.

The emotions she thought were already at their peak surged within her, unbidden… overwhelming.

God… How could this devil do this to her? How could he stand there looking like the handsomest male in existence and looking at her like he’d been waiting for her forever? How could he… make her so utterly…  happy?

After what felt like a very long while, she finally managed to resume her approach. Her heart was beating a rapid tempo, quickening the nearer she gets to him… to the man who had transformed an ordinary evening into a memory she would cherish forever.

And the moment Eva stepped into the candlelit circle that seemed to hold all the magic of the universe, Gage dropped to one knee and opened a small box before her.

Eva caught her breath, catatonic for a moment until her lips began to quiver due to emotions.

"Eva, my darling… my wife… my one and only love… will you marry me?" Gage's voice filled the air.

And the whole world seemed to halt. Everything blurred into insignificance as her focus narrowed to the man before her and the ring held.

The world seemed to stop. Her vision blurred at she shifted her eyes from him to the ring on his hand.

“Yes…” her voice cracked with emotion. “A million times yes, Gage. I will marry you!”

Gage's smile was so broad and filled with nothing but love and joy, it might have outshone the flickering candles that encircled them.

He slid the ring onto her finger. Then, with a fluid motion, he rose to his feet, lifting her into his arms and twirling her around.

Their laughter mingled as they remained in there, enveloped with happiness and surrounded by the soft glow of countless candles that witnessed that very special moment.

Eva soon leaned in, pressing her forehead gently against Gage's, her smile still radiating pure joy. "I love you so much, Gage Acheron," she whispered, her voice trembling with emotion as tears of happiness began to trace paths down her cheeks.

"And I love you, Eva… forever and always…" Gage replied, his own emotions mirroring hers in the quiet space between them.

I can't believe how I am feeling right now… even though you’re already my husband."

"Me too. Should we do this every month?" Gage suggested, the idea sparking in his eyes.

"Proposing to your wife every month?!" Eva's laughter bubbled up at the thought, finding the idea unbelievable yet quite tempting.

"You don’t want that? Hm?"

"I know I’m not the most romantic woman but… who wouldn’t want to experience this again and again?" Eva admitted, her heart was already swelling at the mere thought of repeating such a special moment again and again.

“That’s set then, darling. From now on, I’ll propose to you every month and you can’t stop me," Gage declared with a smirk on his handsome face.

Eva laughed again. "Fine… but don’t overdo it, okay? I’d be fine if my next ring were made of leaves."

His Duchess is a Ghost (Novel) - Chapter 38

Though silent, the duke complied with her request, adjusting their position with deliberate movement. He ensured that Alena moved with him, his arms encircling her with an intensity that left no room for doubt—as if telling her that he was not about to let her escape their skin contact without his consent.

With his face buried against her collarbone, they settled on the bed — she, now kneeling and straddling him.

Alena offered the doctor an apologetic smile, her hand gently stroking Kaztiel's hair. "He's quite clingy at the moment, so I believe you can proceed with the bandage removal just like this," she explained.

"Certainly, Duchess," the doctor replied after flashing a look that said even he was in disbelief at how the duke was currently behaving.

Soon, Alena's attention was focused on the doctor's work on the wound. As the bandages were peeled away, the severity of the duke’s injury was laid bare before her eyes. The wound was grievous, its appearance alone suggested immense pain. Alena recalled her brother's agony under similar circumstances, how he would grit his teeth and clutch at the bed linens. And yet, this man in his arms simply stayed still, her hold on her remained steady, making her wonder if he did not feel pain or he was just utterly good at hiding it. But was it even possible for anyone to simply act like an unfeeling stone like this when his entire being should be getting wrecked with pain?

Throughout the doctor's careful ministrations, Alena's gentle caresses never ceased.

And that was the exact scene that welcomed General Elkhart the moment he entered the duke’s room. The scene before him—a wounded duke, stoically enduring his treatment, cradled in the arms of a seemingly utterly concerned duchess.

Elkhart stood immobilized by surprise, his gaze fixed on the unexpected scene before him. It took him a moment to collect himself before he managed to bow in a gesture of respect towards the Duchess, whom he had certainly not anticipated encountering in such a situation at all.

As he straightened up, Alena greeted him with a graceful smile, an embodiment of poise and dignity.

The general opened his lips and was about to speak but abruptly paused, his attention clearly caught by something else—her attire. Sensing his gaze, Alena cast a discreet glance down at herself, and she finally realized that right now… she was in her wedding dress like always!

For a moment, time, for her, seemed to stand. And then, in her mind, she began to smile.

At long last, Alena could sense the tide finally turning in her favor.

She knew that the mere sight of her wearing a wedding dress in this situation would ignite a whirlwind of questions and speculations in the mind of the observant General Elkhart.

And she was right because she immediately noticed Elkhart's reaction. Confusion and intrigue momentarily flashed across his features before he swiftly masked his expression with the practiced ease of a man accustomed to the unpredictable currents of court life.

He then bowed at the duchess once again, ready to excuse himself without getting the duke’s attention, when Alena’s graceful voice echoed.

"If you have something important to report, please don't hesitate on account of my presence, General," Alena encouraged.

Elkhart blink before his eyes faltered a little and looked at the duke who was still unmoving in the duchess’ embrace.

"Seems the General has urgent news for you, my dearest," Alena whispered to the duke so lovingly. "However, he appears somewhat reluctant to proceed in my presence. Perhaps, I should excuse myself for a moment—"

"Speak, Elkhart," the duke finally spoke, cutting through Alena's offer with a command that left no room for further delay.

And with that, Elkhart delivered his message, "A royal summon has arrived, my lord. And it concerns not just you but the duchess as well. You are both required at the grand palace with utmost urgency."

His Duchess is a Ghost (Novel) - Chapter 37

As Alena’s lips parted in disbelief, the duke glanced towards the door.

Although no sound had reached her ears, that simple gesture was enough for Alena to understand that he might have detected someone's approach.

As the duke began to loosen his hold on her hands, obviously preparing to pull himself away, Alena swiftly raised her legs and securely wrapped them around the duke's waist. This unexpected move of hers caused him to halt mid-action, his gaze snapping back to her.

Alena had already come to the realization that her initial strategy of remaining unseen by everyone had been ultimately proven futile. Because since the duke had become unconscious, not one of his men had even considered to check on her. She had anticipated that someone would eventually seek her out, inquiring about her well-being or summoning her to the duke's side, and then that would lead them to stumble upon the truth that the 'duchess' they believed to be right inside her chambers was, in fact, non-existent. Yet, none of this happened.

So why not just make her presence known? She should just step into the light, and let them catch glimpses of her and then make them wonder once she would vanish into thin air. She knew that the duke will definitely prevent them from witnessing her materializing or disappearing but the mere knowledge of her inexplicable comings and goings would surely sow seeds of curiosity and suspicion. Eventually, they would be forced to acknowledge the peculiar nature of her existence, her appearances, and disappearances! And once that happens… rumors would spread and eventually reach her family’s ears leading for investigations!

“They're coming, Duchess...” The duke’s voice pulled her from her thoughts. “Are you truly comfortable being seen in such an intimate position with your injured husband?"

Shame made her bit her lip but the prospect of disgrace did not deter her. "Why? Are you now concerned for my reputation, Duke?" she countered.

He opened his lips to respond as his hands fell to hold her legs when she abruptly reached out and wound her arms around his neck. She would not let him peel her off him. Not until they see her!

The door opened before the duke could even remove his hands on her legs.

The footsteps ceased, the world outside their immediate vicinity paused, and for a moment, their bodies mirrored the stillness of the world around them.

Then the awkward shuffling of feet continued for a moment longer before the hesitant voice of a man, presumably the doctor, filtered through the slightly opened door. "Pardon me, my lord," the voice echoed with a note of caution. "But I would strongly suggest you abstain from... such endeavors for the time being... unless you desire your wound to reopen. I fear you may not have noticed, but... your wound has indeed begun to bleed again."

The duke let go of Alena’s legs and was about to hold her hands, maybe to peel her off him when Alena pulled him as hard as she could, causing his body to crash against her.

“Please come in, doctor," Alena announced, her voice ringing clear and authoritative as she cradled Kaztiel's head against her shoulder, securing him in what looked like a protective embrace.

As the door swung open to admit the pale, slender figure of the doctor, his eyes immediately widened at the unexpected sight of Alena. In response, Alena smiled at him with such effortless grace that it momentarily flustered the man, prompting him to bow his head in a mix of respect and surprise.

"Please treat him now," Alena urged, inflecting her voice with concern. "He felt so cold, I had to hold him like this. I hope you don't mind my presence."

"Oh, n-not at all, princess... um, your grace," the doctor stuttered, correcting himself in confusion. "Very well, I shall begin. Uh... we need to remove the bandages, so, um, could you please..."

"Dear," Alena whispered to the duke, her voice soft and coaxing, "we need to sit up."

His Duchess is a Ghost (Novel) - Chapter 36

When Alena opened her eyes, shock and surprise instantly gripped her. How was she still in the duke's arms?!

Her body nearly went catatonic when she also realized that her position had changed. Now she was facing him, her head on his shoulder, and her hand possessively wrapped around his stomach. In short, she was sleeping in this man’s arms so... intimately!

Alena gritted her teeth, and when she realized it was already late in the morning, judging from the sun rays peeking through the curtains, her expression turned even more disbelieving. Did she really just spend the entire night sleeping in this man's arms? Wait... More importantly, was she even sleeping with a living man right now?

Alena lifted her gaze, and to her astonishment, she found him not only alive but also fully awake!

"Good morning, Duchess," he greeted, his voice threading through the air like the perfect music a woman would love to hear every morning. And though that same old blank expression was gracing his handsome face as usual, a new light seemed to dance in his eyes, casting him in an almost ethereal glow. It must be the morning sun that was lending him this dreamlike allure, right? But was it even possible for a man who was teetering on death's threshold just a night ago to radiate with such an inexplicably breathtaking beauty?

The sheer thought of such a possibility was so ridiculous to Alena that she concluded that the man she’s looking at right now should be dead. Because, well, he certainly looked like someone who, in his final departure, had shed all mortal flaws, only leaving behind an ethereal beauty too surreal for the living world. Right! He must be dead, and that’s why he seemed to be glowing like this!

"I wouldn't fault you for being spellbound by my handsomeness, but the doctor will arrive very soon. So, you should consider getting off my arms now, duchess,” he said, causing Alena’s blood to boil in an instant. So, this scoundrel is still alive!

“Why are you not dead yet?” Alena hissed at him. Her gaze now sharp as blade.

“Truly, nothing compares to your greetings, Alena,” he replied, his golden eyes catching a sparkle from the bright morning sun.

"Well, good for you because..."

The duke sharply inhaled as Alena's fist connected with his abdomen. The unexpected force of the impact drawing a gasp from his lips.

"...my greetings are far from over," Alena added as she drew back her arm, aiming to deliver another blow.

But before her fist could find its mark again, she felt her wrists being swiftly captured in an iron grip.

In an instant, her hands were lifted and securely pinned above her head.

She looked up, her gaze meeting his. The duke was now hovering over her, so imposing. His grip on her like a vise.

Alena was caught off guard. How? How was he still moving with such speed, such strength? She was expecting him to be in his most vulnerable… weakest state given his situation. So what was this?

"What in the world are you made of? You're essentially a massive chunk of rock masquerading as a human, aren't you?" Alena told him, glaring harder at him.

Of course, she braced herself for a witty or sarcastic retort, typical of their exchanges, and planned her next move. Noticing how his legs were positioned—spread in a way that entrapped her between them—she saw her opportunity. It was an ideal moment for a swift kick, a thought that brought a mischievous glint to her eyes. The thought of delivering a well-aimed strike to his precious ducal balls was almost too good to pass up.

But to her surprise, the duke remained silent. He simply stared down at her, his expression unreadable, a calmness in his eyes that was almost disconcerting. She searched his face, his eyes, for any sign of his next move, but it was like trying to read a blank page.

Seizing the moment, Alena decided to throw his earlier words back at him. "I can't blame you if you couldn't help getting spellbound by my beauty, but..." she paused for effect, "...the doctor will be here soon. So, you should consider getting off me now, duke, or else… you'll risk having the almighty Duke of Claveria seen gawking at a ghost like a dumbstruck fool. Your people might just faint at the sight of you like this," she finished, a smirk playing on her lips.

"A dumbstruck fool, huh," he murmured, his voice unnecessarily so deep, resonating through the quiet room. "Is that truly the impression I give right now, Duchess?"

"That's precisely what you look like, Duke," she managed, trying hard to not succumb to the deadly pull of those golden orbs. "Does this revelation surprise you? Is it so unbelievable that you find it difficult to accept?"

"No," he responded promptly. "I find it... intriguing, actually."

“What?”

"Yes. You see, it's the first time anyone has ever described me as a 'dumbstruck fool.' That's quite the novel experience for me."

“…”

IMDD CHAPTER 296

In the open garden, illuminated by numerous candles, Gage was right there, dressed in an elegant suit. His hair was neatly swept back, making him look like a modern era Greek god groom, waiting for his goddess bride to arrive.

He was pacing back and forth while his hand occasionally fiddled with something in his pocket when the atmosphere was disrupted by a certain someone’s unwelcome arrival.

Several candles flickered and died out abruptly, causing Gage to halt his pacing and turn his gaze sharply towards the newcomer – to Calix.

"You killed eleven of my candles," Gage remarked, his voice calm yet edged with displeasure.

Calix opened his mouth as if to offer an explanation or retort, but then, seemingly reconsidering the effort of speech, he raised his hand, fingers poised as if to flick and relight the candles in his own way, when Gage’s piercing look halted him mid-gesture.

"I’ve delicately lit those candles up with matches, one by one, Cal," Gage emphasized, highlighting the care and effort he had invested in setting up the scene.

Calix held Gage’s gaze for a moment before he eventually ran his fingers through his hair and then stretched out his hand.

Catching the matches Gage tossed his way, he squatted down to relight the candles, his movements precise and swift while Gage watched, smirking mischievously. But the hint of amusement playing on his lips quickly faded when he noticed Calix’s feet.

"What happened to your shoes?" Gage asked, head tilted inquisitively.

"Eva's about to reach your door. So, if you want her attention fully on you the moment she enters, you should call her right now. Because if you don’t, she’ll surely ask you to send someone to fetch a certain someone in the middle of your moments," Calix told him. “You know Eva will not just forget about someone who helped her no matter the situation.”

Gage's eyes widened briefly and without wasting another moment, he made the call.

“Gage? Oh thank god, the network’s back!” Eva exclaimed.

And Gage’s concern deepened as he noticed the sound of her hurried breaths. "Why do you sound like you’re panting?" asked, his forehead creasing with worry.

"I’m walking. But I’m almost there. Oh, can you please send a chauffeur to… a man past the second gate? He helped me when my car's tire broke but before we get here, his car broke too. Just tell him to look for the guy that doesn’t have shoes," Eva explained, her words tumbling out in a rush of gratitude and urgency.

Turning his gaze back to Calix, Gage connected the dots. "Alright. I got it, darling. I’m sending someone now," he assured her.

"Thanks, love. I’ll be there in a minute," Eva responded.

“Okay, I’m waiting.”

As soon as the call ended. Calix spoke. "Key," he demanded, his hand outstretched.

With a swift motion, Gage lobbed his car keys towards him, the gesture accompanied by a pointed accusation. "You... made my wife walk and broke her heels..." Gage began, his words trailing off into a half-hearted grumble.

"Heel," Calix corrected. "I merely executed your order, Gage. And don’t worry, she was never in danger of falling under my watch." Pausing for effect, he then added, "Now, if you'll excuse me... I wish you luck. And do try to relax a bit. It's quite the spectacle to witness the devil himself wrestling with nerves. If those little demons see you like this… they might all faint to death."

And with those parting words, Calix vanished as swiftly as he had appeared, leaving behind a stirring of the air.

"That little… don’t think this will be easily forgotten..." he devilishly muttered to himself, before he took a moment, inhaling deeply, allowing the crisp evening air to fill his lungs and steady his heart.

As he exhaled, he straightened his suit and stance.

Meanwhile, Eva finally arrived at the front of the mansion, when a car sped past her. She paused to watch it disappear into the distance, relieved at how fast Gage responded with her request.

Once she stood by the door, she took a deep breathe. Alright… she’s finally home!

Now that she stood there, her excitement before all those series of interruptions happened was back. She couldn’t wait to know what was it that Gage wanted to talk to her about!

Just as she was about to push the door open, her gaze fell to her feet that were still encased in the oversized shoes. She was certain that Gage would notice them in an instant especially if he’s waiting just beyond this door.

Eva certainly didn’t want them to talk about the shoes first and foremost when she was dying for the main topic so she slipped her feet out of them and set the large shoes aside with care, ensuring they were neatly arranged and out of the way.

Reaching into her bag to retrieve her mirror, Eva checked her reflection to make sure that all that happened just moments ago hadn't left her looking disheveled. To her relief, she still looked presentable. With a satisfied nod at her reflection, she tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear, and finally gently pushed the door open.

IMDD CHAPTER 295

Eva could only resign with a sigh as she slipped off her broken heels. Her hesitation wasn't really about accepting help from him. It was because of her concern for Gage's feelings. Eva knew how she would feel if the roles were reversed—if she saw Gage in a similarly situation with another woman, she knew jealousy would rear its head, regardless of the context. Moreover, she just didn’t want to cause even a small misunderstanding between her and Gage when he just returned to her. And that was why she instantly rejected Calix’s offer to carry her.

She also knew that her, wearing Calix’s shoes could still stir some jealousy, considering she would feel jealous herself if she saw another woman wearing Gage’s coat. However, she found herself without alternatives at the moment. And so, she told herself that the Gage, who was waiting for her at home right now was the calm and understanding husband of her.

And so, she wore Calix’s oversized shoes. She then made an attempt to walk, her movements awkward due to the size mismatch. When Calix stood up, she turned to him, appreciating his kindness. "You really are such a good person, Cal…" she remarked as they began their walk.

Trying her best to walk normally in shoes far too large, Eva was acutely aware of how comical she must have looked. But Calix maintained his usual stoic demeanor, his gaze fixed ahead, his expression inscrutable. "Bad people can be gentlemen too," he casually replied.

"Well, true. But you're not just being a gentleman. You're also selfless. Just like what you're doing right now. I believe that selfless people are good people," Eva responded, trying to highlight the positivity in his actions.

"I'm not selfless. At all," Calix replied, dismissing her compliment with a straightforwardness that left no room for debate.

Eva could only raise an eyebrow and let out another quiet sigh.

Changing the subject, she broached a more personal topic. "Oh, and I’ve been meaning to talk to you about this, but my husband is back now, so… I can no longer go on dates with you."

Calix's response was a simple nod, an acknowledgment devoid of surprise or emotion. His acceptance of her words was as straightforward as everything else about him,

"Will you be in trouble? I mean, isn't Mr. Deluca pressuring you to settle down?" Eva inquired, concern lacing her words.

"He is," Calix admitted briefly.

"You should really try to date someone seriously, you know? I could help you find someone if you'd like," Eva suggested, her tone light, accompanied by a hopeful grin.

"I'll think about it," was Calix's noncommittal reply.

Suddenly, he halted his steps, prompting Eva to look at him with concern. "What's wrong?" she asked, peering down at his feet. "Did you step on something?"

"No. But I'm..." Calix paused for a few seconds. "I'm tired," he finally said.

“…”

Somehow, his response was something Eva never expected at all. In fact, those words were almost unbelievable because well… was this man still the Calix Deluca she knew? Why did she feel like he’s really kind of weird tonight?

"I think I'll wait here instead. Your house is nearby, right?" he broke the awkward silence.

"Oh… it's actually just right there. Are you sure you don't want to just come along?"

"No thanks. I'll stay here and wait for your driver," Calix declined, his decision firm.

Eva could only blink at him, still momentarily taken aback. Was he genuinely tired, or was there another reason for his sudden stop… wait… could it be that he really stepped onto something and he was just too proud to admit it? This guy…

"Alright, I'll send someone as soon as possible.” Eva finally gave in. “Don't move, and wait right here, okay?"

He nodded in agreement, and with that, Eva walked away in haste. She needed to immediately send someone to come and give Calix a ride home!

IMDD CHAPTER 294

"Looks like I'll walk from here," Eva said, trying to hide her frustration and disbelief as she turned to Calix.

When Calix didn’t say a word, Eva continued. "My home isn't far, so I'll just walk. I think you better wait here, and I'll just have someone come back for you. Don't worry, it's very safe here."

Without waiting for his reply, she then stepped out of the car. The walk to the mansion would take only several minutes, and given that they were within the boundaries of the Acheron estate, she felt really secure in the familiar surroundings.

"Alright, see you tomorrow, Cal. I'll call you once the network is back," Eva said with a reassuring smile, bending slightly to ensure her words reached him before she gently closed the car door.

However, she had barely taken several steps when she heard footsteps catching up to her. Turning, she found Calix by her side.

"Geez… I told you, you don't need to come with me. It's not that far," Eva protested, though a part of her had anticipated his reaction. Calix had always been protective of her, always ensuring her safety whenever they were together.

Before, she had been suspecting that he might actually like her at some extent, maybe romantically.

Well, his constant concern and the care he had shown had all the hallmarks of someone harboring feelings. But as time passed, Eva began to question her initial assessment. The more she observed and experienced his behavior, the clearer it became to her that Calix's actions were not driven by romantic affection but rather by the kind of person he was—dutiful, protective, and perhaps acting out of a sense of responsibility, possibly to not let down George. Sometimes, he gave off that vibe as if making sure that she was safe was his duty and his top most priority. Making her feel like he’s almost like an extremely dedicated bodyguard. Which didn’t really make sense to her sometimes because well… Calix wasn’t a bodyguard or just an ordinary man. He was one of the biggest business tycoons too!

Because of all her initial doubts back then, Eva had even taken the bold step of asking Calix directly about his feelings. And his response was as straightforward as she had anticipated, confirming that he did not indeed harbor romantic feelings for her.

It was already years that they knew each other and though she became very comfortable with him, nothing really changed with how it was between them and until now, she still felt like there was really no reason for her to be wary of him at all.

"Want me to carry you?" Calix suddenly offered as they continued walking. His question was so unexpected that Eva turned towards him sharply, as if she couldn't believe what she had just heard.

"No, thanks—" she declined, but in that instant, her heel broke, sending a shock of surprise through her.

Thankfully, Calix quickly steadied her by grabbing her forearm, preventing her from falling.

"Oh, damn…" Eva couldn't hide her frustration. "Seriously… there's definitely something fishy about all this bad luck," she muttered under her breath, suspecting once again that there was some force at play behind her series of interruptions tonight!

Calix bent down and placed his large shoes in front of her, a gesture so unexpected it made Eva’s eyes widen in confusion. "What are you…"

"You don't want me to carry you, so," he replied, offering a practical solution to her predicament.

"Your shoes are too big for me, and I can't make you walk barefooted—"

"I have socks," Calix countered simply, as if that solved everything.

"Still—" Eva attempted to argue further, but as Calix looked up at her from his squatting position, Eva instinctively fell silent. This wasn't the first time she'd witnessed his unique ability to command attention and enforce quiet with a single glance. In meetings, regardless of who was speaking, all it took was one look from Calix, and the room would fall silent. It was as if he possessed a special power that could silence anyone with just his gaze. He had directed this same potent look at her once before, during a heated discussion about security measures, effectively cutting off her protests. And now, here he was, employing the same tactic, leaving Eva momentarily speechless once again. This guy…

His Duchess is a Ghost (Novel) - Chapter 35

But as time passed, Alena returned to the duke’s chambers. She had wanted to stay outside, but in the end, she couldn’t stop herself from entering the room again. The fact that he was stabbed because he had tried to shield her while they were in the tub kept nagging at her. She didn’t like it, the way her mind was trying to confuse her.

But she firmly made sure that no kind of confusion would ever sway her. She was not naïve enough to simply believe in someone’s action, especially after everything that had happened to her. That must be just some kind of strategy to confuse her. Perhaps the duke thought he could manipulate her by performing such a heroic act. Perhaps he was trying to win her over so that she would cooperate with him because he realized that he still needed her to make his plans work.

Those thoughts were not impossible. In fact, Alena believed they were very plausible because she couldn’t think of any other reason why he would do such a thing for a person he had had killed. Yes, she still believed he was definitely the one who had her killed. Because if it wasn’t him, why can’t he just tell her? Why can’t he just start proving to her that he was not the mastermind? Why can’t he just answer any of her questions?

His low groan echoed in the quiet chamber, prompting Alena to draw even closer. Her face was set in a rigid expression as she looked down at him.

"But fine... I’ll at least stay here by your side, Duke," she muttered, telling herself that not leaving him to die alone should be enough repayment for him taking that dagger, even though she never asked.

"Seems Elkhart was right when he said you're the softest..." His hoarse and low voice echoed, causing Alena to freeze.

His eyes were closed, and there seemed to be a faint smile on his handsome face. Did he... hear her, and that’s why he said that? Or was he simply... dreaming?

"You... did you just... hear me?" she asked, seeking confirmation.

When he didn’t respond, Alena tried again. "If you think I’m staying here because I feel sorry, you’re terribly wrong, Duke. I’m simply here to make sure you die."

At her words, his brows furrowed, and then his jaws tightened as though he were in pain.

"Are you... finally dying?" she pressed, her face a mask of steely resolve. "You're finally dying, aren't you? Duke Donovian?"

"So noisy..." he managed to murmur, his voice weaker and raspier than before.

Alena found herself momentarily at a loss for words. So he could really hear her? And he had the audacity to call her noisy?

"So, you've been able to hear me this entire time, huh? Seriously... I can't believe how naive I've been... You really are an exceptional actor, aren't you, Duke? You must have been fully aware of my presence all along, haven't you—" Her accusation was cut short. Her eyes widened in shock as she felt his sudden grip on her wrist.

And just like that, her body was no longer translucent but flesh and bones once again. She shifted her gaze slowly onto his face only to find his eyes still closed.

Before she could even shake her head in utter disbelief, he pulled her and the next thing she knew, she was on the bed, right next to him, his arms wrapped around her.

“So… cold…” he murmured as his arms around her held her tighter.

“What in the world are you… doing?!” Alena finally spoke. “Let go of me this instant, duke!”

But her protest seemed to have fallen into deaf ears.

“You really are trying me, aren’t you? Do you really think I will just let you play me like this whenever you want?” she smirked and just as she began to struggle, she was shocked at the sheer strength of his arms around her. He was like an immovable stone holding her. Or was she just the one who was utterly weak because this wasn’t really her true body or something?

It was unbelievable how he was still so strong even in this state. She was confident a while ago that she could easily push him, but now… she couldn’t even push him an inch. Was his body forged from stone?

“Duke Donovian! What did I say? I told you to let…” Alena trailed off as she realized that his body was shivering even though he was burning like fire.

His arms around her kept tightening as if he was still seeking for more warmth from her body. She could feel her back pressed hard against his chest. She could feel his fiery breath against her cheek as he nestled into her neck. She could feel his powerful hands, searing as embers, clasping her shoulder and her hip firmly.

It was inexplicably warm...

It was like a man made of stone and fire was embracing her, as though it would kill him if he couldn't hold her tightly enough.

Alena bit the inside of her lip, eyes clenched shut against the sensation.

After a long while, she opened her eyes, released her bite on her lip, and relaxed. “I really… really hate you, duke Donovian,” she uttered, gazing into space. “So please…” Her lashes fluttered close again. “…just die, already.”

His Duchess is a Ghost (Novel) - Chapter 34

Days passed.

Alena did nothing but try to follow Zilal to retrieve her dagger while the duke remained unconscious.

But Zilal moved as though he was aware that someone was after the dagger.  He kept it hidden beneath his clothes almost all the time. The most infuriating thing was the fact that Zilal had swathed the dagger in black bandages, effectively barring Alena from making any direct contact with the weapon.

Zilal took meticulous precautions: when he bathed, the dagger was securely stowed under his garments; when he slept, it lay hidden under his pillow, always within reach.

For days, she did everything she could, but all her efforts were futile.

Now here she was again, stuck in the same room where the duke was sleeping.

The moon was shining bright as Alena sat by the window, looking up absentmindedly. Her luminous, ghostly form seemed to catch and reflect the moonlight, casting her in an ethereal light that made her appear as if she could be the moon's own avatar, should it ever choose to walk the earth.

As she gazed up at the lonesome moon, Alena wondered if it ever felt lonely or tired. Just existing right up there, alone for eternity.

“Have you ever thought to just… rest and disappear?” she whispered, asking the moon as if it could hear her. “If I were in your place… I don’t think I could ever handle it. I can’t even imagine how hard it must have been for you… The way you relentlessly and endlessly keep shining just to give light in all these darkness. The thought alone is overwhelming…”

Alena sighed, the corners of her mouth turning up into a wry smile as she realized she was conversing with the moon again. This was already the second time this happened since the duke fell unconscious. Was she starting to be lonely? Was she turning into some lonely ghost or something? No… this must just be… boredom, right?

Trying to distract herself, Alena moved. She felt like if this keeps on, she might actually lose her mind and that was something she could never let happen!

But just as she was about to leave the room in search of Zilal once again, a sound halted her in her tracks. Her attention snapped back to the duke's bed, where she noticed a subtle movement.

And then a low groan broke the silence.

Alena cautiously approached the bed, and upon seeing the duke's sweat-drenched brow, her eyes widened. He’s succumbing to a fever!

Despite the grave nature of his wound, which by all accounts should have been life-threatening, the duke had remained fever-free up until now. This resilience had led Alena to believe that his recovery was well underway, that his survival was all but assured.

But here he was now. Looking like the fever was killing him.

Having witnessed the harrowing toll such fevers could exact on the body, with even her own brother falling victim not too long ago, Alena could recognize the signs of severe illness even without the ability to physically touch the duke. The familiarity of the symptoms before her spurred a sudden urgency within her.

And before she realized it, she darted towards the door.

But just as her ghostly form passed through the door, she halted.

Her face, etched with urgent concern moments earlier, now mirrored shock and realization. What was she doing? Was she genuinely on the verge of seeking help for the duke? Her enemy? The very man she had vowed to kill?

Her hands clenched into fists as she rooted herself firmly on the floor. The sight of his face a while ago must've just reminded her of her brother's, therefore driving her to take immediate action, knowing that he needed to be attended to or else he could die.

But now that she was reminded that the man was none other than Duke Donovian, there was no need for her to go and ask for help. It's true that initially, she did not like how it all ended up like this. She wanted to be the one to take his life, not someone else. But eventually, she came to understand that it was she who made everything turn out this way to begin with. She was still the one who indirectly put the duke in this state.

If the duke were to die now, the responsibility would lie squarely with her. In a twisted sense, this would mean she had indeed been the one to end his life, fulfilling her objective, even though not in the way she had originally intended.

And so, Alena turned to face the duke's chambers once again, her expression steely. This was it... She would simply stand here and wait until the duke finally took his final breath.

IMDD CHAPTER 293

Inside the comfort of her car, Eva’s gaze was fixed on the world outside the window, which blurred past in a cascade of lights and shadows.

Her anticipation and excitement to finally reach home filled her with an eager warmth, particularly at the thought of what Gage might share with her. She was really curious about what they’re going to talk about tonight that since a few hours ago, she couldn’t stop looking at her wristwatch like what she was doing right now.

When she saw that there’re now probably less than 10 minutes left for her to reach their house, a smile danced on her lips. She took a moment to straighten her attire, wanting to look her best once she’s home with her beloved husband and daughter.

However, her preparation was abruptly interrupted by the car's tires screeching against the pavement, bringing the vehicle to an unexpected and jarring halt.

A spike of panic shot through Eva's calm, her heart rate accelerating. "What happened?" she inquired as the partition between her and the driver descended.

"Sorry, ma'am. It seems something blew up our tires," came the driver's apologetic explanation.

Eva blinked. “Huh? What do you…” She trailed off, her mind racing through the possibilities. Dismissing the initial shock, she reached for her phone, intent on calling for assistance. However, her surprise morphed into disbelief when she realized there was no connection. What in the world…?!

The sudden and unexplainable loss of signal, coupled with the inexplicable tire blowout, sent a ripple of unease through her. This sequence of events felt far from coincidental.

As the atmosphere thickened with her growing anxiety, the headlights of an approaching car pierced the dimming light, offering a glimmer of hope.

Eva's guard sprang into action, flagging down the unexpected aid. To Eva's astonishment, the vehicle that pulled over was none other than Calix's.

Despite the gentle drizzle that began to fall, she didn't hesitate to step out of her vehicle.

"Cal!" she called out, her voice carrying a mixture of relief and confusion. "What are you doing in this area?"

Calix, ever the embodiment of calm, surveyed the scene with a keen eye. "Need my help?" he offered, his voice cutting through the quiet rain, practical and direct.

"Yes! My car's tire blew up out of nowhere. And now, I can't seem to get any signal. Is it just my phone?" Eva frowned in slight frustration as she glanced at her phone.

Calix checked his own device. "Not just you, apparently."

Eva's bafflement grew. "This is insane. But anyway, could I ask you for a favor, Cal? I need to get home as soon as possible. Could you—"

"Sure," Calix interrupted. He opened the passenger door for her without any further ado.

After exchanging a brief nod with her guard and driver, Eva climbed into Calix's car, grateful for the ride but still processing the night's surreal turn.

As Calix executed a careful U-turn and began to navigate towards Eva's home, the drive was shrouded in the same usual silence between them, broken only by the sound of the rain against the windshield.

Just as they were about four minutes away from her destination, the car screeched to a halt. The abrupt halt jolted her once again as she immediately turned to look at Calix with widened eyes.

"Seems... our tires blew up," Calix stated, his tone as neutral as if commenting on the weather, not their second bizarre mishap of the evening.

Eva’s lips parted, but no word came out. She was simply, utterly, speechless now. This damn string of coincidences felt too orchestrated to be random. Was this some sort of cosmic joke? Is this actually the doing of a naughty little devil intent on keeping her from her home?!

IMDD CHAPTER 292

Gage had just successfully managed to tuck Gigi into bed without waking her up when his phone vibrated.

He hastily pressed the power button to silence the vibration and sighed in relief when Gaia didn’t stir. Glancing at the screen, he saw Hunter's name flashing.

With utmost care, Gage stood, pressing a gentle kiss onto Gaia's forehead, and meticulously adjusted the stuffed toys around her, ensuring her comfort.

"Sleep well, princess," he murmured before he stealthily made his way out of the room.

Once outside, Gage accepted the call. "Bro! I think you need to get here right away!" Hunter's voice was low but tinged with unmistakable panic.

"What's going on?" Gage inquired, his voice the embodiment of calm amidst the storm of Hunter's distress.

"I think... I think gramps might be... he's suddenly so vibrant and much better since the moment he woke up. I'm worried this could be... terminal lucidity," Hunter rushed to explain, his words heavy with concern and fear.

Leaning against the corridor wall, Gage slipped a hand into his pocket. "Don't worry, it's not terminal lucidity," he assured, his voice steady and reassuring.

A prolonged silence followed as Hunter processed Gage's words. "You... did you do something?" he finally asked, a mix of incredulity and hope coloring his tone.

Gage took a few moments before responding calmly. "If gramps is lively, that means he still has a long way to go. It's not time for him yet."

There was another long pause before Hunter released a long sigh of relief that seemed to lift a burden from his shoulders. "You're right... yeah, gramps still has definitely a long way to go," he admitted, his voice echoing the relief of having a heavy weight lifted from his heart. “Now that you’re back, he’s gonna be fine.”

"Yes, and don’t forget he's still waiting for your child, Hunter, so go find a girl and get married already. Human life is short." His words, half-teasing, half-serious, sparked a forced laughter from Hunter.

"Fine. I'll do that. Guess I should just release an announcement on my social media to look for a wife."

"That's a great strategy, I must say. I will look forward to your social media announcement."

"Great your ass. Okay, I'll go check on gramps!" Hunter retorted, ready to shift his focus back to the matter at hand.

"You should bring him on a vacation. We'll join as well in a few days," Gage suggested.

"Hm… a vacation on a remote island with just us should be really great! Alright, I'll check on gramps and hear what he says," Hunter agreed, the idea appealing to him.

After ending the call, Gage allowed himself a small, contented smile before he tucked his phone back into his pocket.

When he looked at his wrist watch, Gage’s eyes slightly stretched before making his way downstairs in haste.

Approaching the door, Gage reached out and swung the door open.

Calix stood on the threshold. Though his face was stoic, his commanding presence seemed subtly irked. He was dressed in an impeccably tailored tuxedo, but in his hands were oversized plastic bags. He looked like some striking royal prince who just came from a frenzied shopping expedition or… something. Well, he still looked expensive as hell despite those oversized plastic bags.

"Don't give me that look as if I've tasked you with something utterly shameful. I simply asked you to purchase some candles, because you’re the only one I know who could accomplish the errand in the blink of an eye," Gage said.

"Some…" Calix repeated as he nudged the bags in Gage's direction. “I already know what you’re up to but I can’t comprehend why you needed two hundred twenty two.”

Gage’s smirk deepened as he accepted the load. "Aren't you aware? The number 222 means that one's love life is aligning perfectly with the universe's grand design."

"So, a devil like yourself has turned to putting faith in angel numbers, huh…"

"And what’s the harm in that?" Gage retorted, his smirk unwavering.

Shaking his head in mild disbelief, Calix sauntered in, claiming a spot within the living room.

Meanwhile, Gage didn’t waste a moment and began the meticulous task of distributing the candles, starting from the doorway, each candle placed with intention.

"Hey, don’t just sit there. Help me out here. I might not be able to finish in time," Gage said when he glanced at his wrist watch and saw that he was running out of time.

Calix offered him a sidelong glance. "Why don't you just use your—"

"Effort, Cal," Gage interjected firmly. "This needs to be done with as much personal effort as possible; it's very special to me."

"Then why ask for help? Shouldn't you be putting in all the effort yourself if it's that special?" Calix countered.

Though Gage immediately realized that the man just didn’t want to help him, he thought that this should really be done by himself alone! "You're right, I should do this myself."

But when he glanced at his wristwatch once more, a flicker of worry crossed his face. "Oh damn, where's Eva right now?"

Calix stretched, a casual crack of his neck breaking the silence. "She'll be here in seven minutes," he estimated.

"What?! Do something, please. I need maybe an hour to set all these up. Now, Cal. Quick."

Calix closed his eyes momentarily, a sigh escaping him as he stood. "Be thankful I owe you something huge… Gage Acheron," he muttered under his breath before making his way out, leaving Gage with a small smirk playing on his lips as he resumed his meticulous arrangement of the candlelit path.

IMDD CHAPTER 291

As Gage brought Gaia into the room, George's face transformed, a radiant and tender smile breaking through at the sight of his great-grandchild.

"Grandpa!!!" Gaia's voice filled the room, and just like that, the atmosphere turned simply heartwarming.

As Gaia enthusiastically shared the details of her school day with her grandpa, Gage quietly excused himself, stepping out to stand by the door, where he found Hunter waiting.

The duo was silent for a long while, leaning against the wall, until Hunter spoke.

"The doctors said, gramps is..." Hunter's voice trailed off, his emotions rendering him momentarily speechless. "He's been holding on for a while now. Feels like... he's been waiting for you all these times. And now that you're back, I'm afraid..." The unsaid words hung heavily between them.

Seemingly overwhelmed or in need of a moment to collect himself, Hunter excused himself. "Okay... I'm leaving a bit. I'll be back immediately tonight though."

Gage didn’t stop him. He also didn’t say a word and just watched Hunter walk away.

When Gage returned inside the room, Gaia and George still indulged in their heartwarming story-telling moment, until little Gaia seemed to have reached her limit. Well, George eventually succumbed as well, and with that, the great-grandfather and great-grandchild slept side by side in peaceful slumber.

Looking at the peaceful scenario, Gage smiled. He took his jacket off and draped it over Gaia before he stared down at the older man.

Seating next to the bed, Gage expression shifted as he gently reached out to hold George’s hand once again.

Inside the warm, inviting kitchen of their mansion, Gage and Gigi were wrapped in the delightful chaos of cooking dinner together.

Earlier, they didn’t wait for George to wake up anymore and left the hospital once Hunter returned. They then stopped at the grocery store before heading home, as they both planned to cook dinner together.

Now, the air was filled with the sounds of sizzling and the aroma of their culinary creations. They moved around each other with ease, laughter and chatter punctuating their activities, each moment adding another layer to their precious memories. Until… their sweet moment was momentarily interrupted when Gage's phone rang.

He answered, his voice softening at the familiar voice on the other end. "Darling?" he said, his affection for Eva evident in just that one word.

Eva's voice, tinged with regret, came through the line. "Sorry, Gage, I'll be a little late tonight. I'll just deal with this last one asap."

Gage, ever understanding, smiled, his tone light and teasing. "Okay, understood, big boss." His playful response was designed to ease her concern, and let her know that their home was a haven of understanding and support. "I'll tuck our princess to bed later, so she won't wait for you."

"Please tell her I'm so sorry and I'll make up tomorrow."

"Mn, I will," Gage assured her.

"Okay, I'll finish this asap. See you in a while, love you," Eva promised.

"Love you, darling," Gage responded, the call ending on a note of enduring affection.

Gigi, ever curious, inquired with a pout that could melt hearts, "Mommy's not going to eat dinner with us?"

Gage knelt down to her level, explaining in terms that would reassure her young heart. "She's a bit too busy today because she missed work for days." His explanation was gentle, framing Eva's absence not as a choice but a necessity. "But don't worry, your awesome dad's going to help her soon so she won't have these overtimes again."

"Really? We can go to the parks soon too, with mommy, right, daddy?" Gigi's spirits lifted at the thought, her eyes sparkling with anticipation.

"Definitely!" Gage affirmed, his promise filling Gigi with excitement.

"I'm so… excited, daddy!"

“Yes gramps, I’m alive and kicking.” Gage told him, and the moment he embraced him, George's face was awash with intense emotions.

And then… the elder cried, holding onto Gage with a tight grip.

“Forgive me for everything.” Gage murmured. He knew how his disappearance had taken a toll on him. He knew George had been devastated. He could feel it right now.

"You little… punk," George uttered through tears, the affectionate insult mingling with the warmth of his tears.

Gage held him tight, providing comfort to the man who had been a monumental influence in his life. From the day George took him in, treating him as his own, he had imparted invaluable lessons to Gage. It was George who taught him the essence of humanity, shaping him into the man he had become. Without George's guidance, Gage doubted he would have understood what it truly means to be human.

As George regained his composure, he wiped away his tears and adopted his familiar, strict yet kind demeanor. "Your audacity to just up and disappear and then reappear like this, you little… did Eva already know?" he inquired with a mix of sternness and concern.

"Yes," Gage replied with a smile, warmth in his voice. "I've also already met my daughter, little Gaia."

"I hope Eva didn’t just take you in so easily!" he grumbled. "That child has been through a lot since the day you're gone. You can't just disappear and then barge right into her door like nothing happened."

Gage rubbed the back of his neck. "Actually, Eva had already accepted me—"

"Oh, that little…" George sighed. "She should've made you grovel! Stop smiling, rascal. You deserve to grovel hard!"

Gage nodded. "You’re right, gramps…" he replied, his smile fading as George shifted.

That subtle shift was all the indication Gage needed to understand that the elder needed to rest.  That was how fragile George had become, unable to even sit for prolonged periods.

As Gage silently helped the elder lie comfortably on the bed, the room fell into a respectful silence, until George's voice broke through. "What happened? Are you alright?"

Gage reassured him with a nod, "I'm fine, gramps. It's a long story, but please don't worry about me."

George's response was a nod of relief. The prospect of Gage's disappearance was a wound that had never fully healed, a shadow over the family that George could not bear to face again. "You're not going to disappear ever again, are you? Eva and Gigi… need you. I don't think Eva will handle it if you disappear on her again."

"I will never let such a thing happen again. I promise you that." His words were a pledge to George, to Eva, to Gigi, and to himself—a vow to remain present, to heal the scars left by his absence and to never again be the cause of their pain.

George took a long, deep breath. As if he was finally able to breathe after such a long time. "I feel like I can finally leave this world in peace—"

“Please…” Gage cut him off, still looking down. “You still have a long way to go, gramps.”

George gripped Gage's hand. "I've lived long enough, Gage. All I wanted is this... seeing you back with Eva, Gaia, and Hunter. Now I don't have any more regrets or worries. I've lived my life the way I wanted. It's never perfect, but I can say that right now... I'm more than ready to go and finally rest." His words carried the weight of a life fully lived, a declaration of peace with his impending journey's end.

With a gentle touch, George reached out, affectionately rubbing Gage's head, a gesture laden with love and pride. "You have been one of the greatest things that happened to me. I am happy that I was able to see my grandchild Gaia. You gave me, us, such a little bundle of joy. I wouldn't be there to watch her grow up, but it's alright. You're here now… And Hunter, that child... I know he's already an old ass man, but... look out for him like you've always been doing since you both were younger. Did you hear me, Gage?"

Gage silently nodded.

"Good…" George murmured, a sense of closure in his voice.

Gage then suddenly stood. "Little Gaia's with me. I'll go get her," he told him and without waiting for George’s response, Gage left the room.

IMDD CHAPTER 289

With Gigi cradled in his arms, Gage momentarily stopped in the hospital corridor upon spotting Hunter, who seemed to be on his way out.

As their eyes locked, Gage resumed walking while Hunter remained rooted to the spot.

"Uncle!" Gigi burst out excitedly, breaking the silence.

Hunter's demeanor immediately softened, and he offered Gigi a sweet smile. "Kitty cat!" he cooed, momentarily slipping into baby talk before clearing his throat to adopt a more normal tone. "How's school, baby girl?"

"It's great! Daddy took me there and then picked me up. My teacher and my classmates said daddy's soooo handsome," Gigi replied.

Hunter raised an eyebrow in playful skepticism. "When I picked you up from school last time, didn't your classmates and teacher say the same thing? That your uncle is very handsome?"

"Yes, but they said daddy looks handsomerrr," Gigi told him with innocent honesty.

Feigning a wounded ego, Hunter clutched his chest. "Ouch. That hurts me—"

"But you're handsome as well, uncle, don't worry."

"As long as little Gigi thinks I'm handsomer, I'm good," Hunter grinned, trying to salvage some pride.

"But for me… Daddy's handsomer too," Gigi uttered apologetically. “Sorry, uncle…”

"Double ouch!" Hunter dramatically grabbed over his chest.

Smirking at Hunter's exaggerated display of dismay, Gage spoke. "Your acting won't work on my princess, Hunter."

Hunter turned towards him with a look of surprise. Then his eyes widened, silently questioning, 'Your memories have returned?!'

Gage responded with a smile as if he’d heard the question Hunter didn’t voice out. "Yes, I'm back."

Hunter was momentarily struck speechless, frozen in place.

Gage reached out, placing a gentle hand on Hunter's shoulder, and squeezing gently. "Sorry for disappearing like that," he whispered, his voice low and genuine.

Hunter bit his lower lip, his eyes briefly betraying a wave of emotion before he quickly concealed it.

With a sigh, Hunter ran a hand through his ash-blond hair and groaned. "Ugh... I can't believe this... be thankful Gigi's here right now," he muttered under his breath. “You deserved to be punched… but later…”

Gage, paying no heed to Hunter's grumbling, turned to his daughter. "Princess, can you go with uncle for a moment? I'll go check on grandpa first, and then I'll come get you so you can meet him too."

"Okay, daddy," Gigi replied obediently.

"Wait... I have a photoshoot waiting..." Hunter started to protest, then sighed as he watched Gage walk away.

Resigned, Hunter took out his phone and made a call. "Sorry, but can you cancel the photoshoot? I know... just that, something really important came up. I'll make it up to everyone... promise... Okay. Thanks!"

As Gage gently pushed the door open, his gaze instantly found George. The elderly man was seated on the bed, his attention captivated by the white clouds in the sky.

Gage remained silent, observing him.

Time had rendered George even more aged and weak than he had been seven years prior. Gage could see it… Frailty had taken its toll.

This was the man who had given him his name. Gage vividly recalled their first encounter, how George had exuded an aura of formidable strength, embodying the esteemed leader he was. Now, time had weathered him, leaving a figure both venerable and visibly nearing human life's natural conclusion.

Slowly, George turned his gaze.

Upon seeing Gage, a look of shock and disbelief washed over George's face. He even looked as though he was seeing the ghost of the grandson he had long mourned as lost to time.

"Gramps..." Gage greeted with a smile, raising his hand in gentle acknowledgement before he cautiously moved closer.

George did not respond. He simply stared at Gage, as if trying to find out whether Gage was real or just an illusion.

“Please tell me you’re not here as some spirit who came from afterlife to summon me,” George finally spoke.

Gage shook his head. “I’m not some spirit, gramps,” Gage affirmed, reaching out to clasp George's frail, aged hand in his own. "I'm back... for real."

Another wave of shock filled the elder’s eyes at the feel of Gage’s hand.

"You are... alive," George managed to articulate, his voice a mere whisper amidst a surge of intense emotions.
