"Looks like I'll walk from here," Eva said, trying to hide her frustration and disbelief as she turned to Calix.

When Calix didn’t say a word, Eva continued. "My home isn't far, so I'll just walk. I think you better wait here, and I'll just have someone come back for you. Don't worry, it's very safe here."

Without waiting for his reply, she then stepped out of the car. The walk to the mansion would take only several minutes, and given that they were within the boundaries of the Acheron estate, she felt really secure in the familiar surroundings.

"Alright, see you tomorrow, Cal. I'll call you once the network is back," Eva said with a reassuring smile, bending slightly to ensure her words reached him before she gently closed the car door.

However, she had barely taken several steps when she heard footsteps catching up to her. Turning, she found Calix by her side.

"Geez… I told you, you don't need to come with me. It's not that far," Eva protested, though a part of her had anticipated his reaction. Calix had always been protective of her, always ensuring her safety whenever they were together.

Before, she had been suspecting that he might actually like her at some extent, maybe romantically.

Well, his constant concern and the care he had shown had all the hallmarks of someone harboring feelings. But as time passed, Eva began to question her initial assessment. The more she observed and experienced his behavior, the clearer it became to her that Calix's actions were not driven by romantic affection but rather by the kind of person he was—dutiful, protective, and perhaps acting out of a sense of responsibility, possibly to not let down George. Sometimes, he gave off that vibe as if making sure that she was safe was his duty and his top most priority. Making her feel like he’s almost like an extremely dedicated bodyguard. Which didn’t really make sense to her sometimes because well… Calix wasn’t a bodyguard or just an ordinary man. He was one of the biggest business tycoons too!

Because of all her initial doubts back then, Eva had even taken the bold step of asking Calix directly about his feelings. And his response was as straightforward as she had anticipated, confirming that he did not indeed harbor romantic feelings for her.

It was already years that they knew each other and though she became very comfortable with him, nothing really changed with how it was between them and until now, she still felt like there was really no reason for her to be wary of him at all.

"Want me to carry you?" Calix suddenly offered as they continued walking. His question was so unexpected that Eva turned towards him sharply, as if she couldn't believe what she had just heard.

"No, thanks—" she declined, but in that instant, her heel broke, sending a shock of surprise through her.

Thankfully, Calix quickly steadied her by grabbing her forearm, preventing her from falling.

"Oh, damn…" Eva couldn't hide her frustration. "Seriously… there's definitely something fishy about all this bad luck," she muttered under her breath, suspecting once again that there was some force at play behind her series of interruptions tonight!

Calix bent down and placed his large shoes in front of her, a gesture so unexpected it made Eva’s eyes widen in confusion. "What are you…"

"You don't want me to carry you, so," he replied, offering a practical solution to her predicament.

"Your shoes are too big for me, and I can't make you walk barefooted—"

"I have socks," Calix countered simply, as if that solved everything.

"Still—" Eva attempted to argue further, but as Calix looked up at her from his squatting position, Eva instinctively fell silent. This wasn't the first time she'd witnessed his unique ability to command attention and enforce quiet with a single glance. In meetings, regardless of who was speaking, all it took was one look from Calix, and the room would fall silent. It was as if he possessed a special power that could silence anyone with just his gaze. He had directed this same potent look at her once before, during a heated discussion about security measures, effectively cutting off her protests. And now, here he was, employing the same tactic, leaving Eva momentarily speechless once again. This guy…
