A point for your consideration Mary... You say you feel sorry for Chani because she got her heart broken. I do too. But I feel just as badly for Paul. He was trapped by his circumstances, his royal blood, the Fremen's expectations, and the sure knowledge that there was only one "narrow way" to do what had to be done. On top of all that, he was tortured long in advance by his foreknowledge of the division from Chani as well as the consequences of the holy war for the entire empire. As Chani herself said; "The world has made choices for us."

"As Written!" This was great. I was so happy to watch this. So you're right that Feyd Rautha Harkonnen could have been Paul, Feyd was so close to being the chosen one, he was like a more messed up Paul.
Just to clear up some confusion, Rabban Harkonnen is dead, Josh Brolin killed him at the end, it was a 2 second fight. At the end discussion you said he was still alive. I get it, it's a long movie, so much happens and Josh Brolin/Gurney kills him so quickly. Also we never saw Josh Brolin die in part 1, he charges into battle and then the scene ends.
The scenes in black and white aren't flashbacks, the Harkonnen homeworld has a messed up sun that makes everything look black and white. When the characters are out of the sunlight the color looks normal, like when they are inside away from windows. For example the scene where Margo the bene gesserit meets Feyd the color is normal.
In the gladiator fight in the middle of the movie when Feyd kills that guy and says "you fought well Atreides", that was a soldier for house Atreides, not a member of the Atreides family. He was in the first movie for like 2 minutes, he was in background and he had a few lines, he was usually standing next to Josh Brolin or Oscar Isaac, he was a high ranking Atreides soldier. So he was kind of familiar but not a major character in part 1.
At the end it says they're going to war with the great houses. I think in the books some of the great houses actually side with Paul because the Atreides House was very well liked. I guess we'll find out in the next movie. It seems weird that all the great houses would instantly be against Paul at the end, plenty of the royal houses disliked the emperor and liked the Atreides.
Anyway sorry for the long comment. I just love these movies and your reaction was so fun.
