I remember when “Dogma” was released. There was a lot of controversy surrounding it. Lots of protests. The thing is that most of the people complaining about the movie and protesting it has not even seen the movie.
I am a lapsed Catholic who saw the movie the year it came out and I loved it. “Chasing Amy” used to be my favorite Kevin Smith movie, but I would say “Dogma” is now. It is a satire not unlike “The Life of Brian” by Monty Python. But that movie is very funny and so is this one. I actually think this movie is better.
I heard that the reason why “Dogma” is hard to find now has more to do with Harvey Weinstein being a jerk about distributing it because Miramax produced this movie. Who knows?
On a personal note, I couldn’t care less whether Jesus was or is black. All I know is that I love the guy. Whether you believe that Jesus is the son of God or not, that’s up to you. Even if Jesus is not the son of God, He was a great man and philosopher who helped the needy, healed the sick, and befriended anyone and everyone. Sadly, a lot of people today who claim to love Jesus behave in ways that are the antithesis of Jesus.
Most Catholics I know love this movie. What Bethany says about losing her faith, that scene always gets me. That was me at age 12 when I lost my faith and stopped going to church. I could not reconcile why priests molesting children got moved to another parish, but if I ate meat during Lent I was on the highway to hell.
I have learned that having an open mind and heart is a good thing. All religions are like branches that belong to the same tree. But having a sense of humor is important, too, and being able to laugh at yourself or find the humor in religion. Kevin Smith made us laugh, but he also made us think. And, BTW, I adore Alanis Morissette. One of my favorite musicians and singers.
Superb video, Mary! Love it! 👍👍🍒🍒
