I can't remember exactly. Jonas had just got out of a closed mental ward because of his suicide in episode 1 that he'd been at for months. The letter was timed to be opened after Mikkel had gone missing. "I destroyed my brain" - haha don't worry it gets MUCH simpler and more straightforward in future hahahahahahahahahah say goodbye to your brain.
