I think the reason why the finale seems more like series finale is because once David Simon (the writer of the show) completed season 3, they weren't assured of returning for a season 4. YES! The Wire was in the verge of cancelation by HBO as it didn't get nearly as much views as shows like Sopranos at the time. So you're right that the way they wrap it up, could've been perfect series finale, especially with literally Avon and Stringer gone.

2021-04-20 15:17:11 +0000 UTCThere is so much detail packed into this season that makes it stand out from all other tv shows. The key theme of the season is reform and why they fail, the destruction of the towers in the opening of the season and destruction of Hamsterdam at the end of the season captures this so well. Stringer and Colvin were the central drivers of change and doing things differently against the established order. They both go out saying “get on with it motherfucker” when they are finished. Pearlman and Daniels are rewarded for being slow and patient and going with the established order. I agree completely when you say if feels like a show finale which is also why I love this show. It doesn’t stick with convention, peaks in the season are normally in the penultimate episode and McNulty the main character has kinda flipped from S1. In S4 he will barely feature (not a spoiler just a heads up) and Greggs has become McNulty (that was what that sex scene was for). There are some clues as to what’s in store in s4 in the end montage. Tony Gray is running for mayor on the platform of Education whilst Carcetti is running on Crime. The name “Gray” is deliberate from the writers. Also the montage song is “fast train” which directly links to Brother Mouzones line “slow train coming” in the episode reformation. This season was made in 2004. The episode is also titled Mission Accomplished which is a reference to George Bush announcing the end of the Iraq War. “we fight on that lie” is also a key symbolism of that. So yeah, so much detail and symbolism packed in.

2021-04-20 07:31:55 +0000 UTCYou're crazy lol. Why would the police just drop Johnny's body on the ground like that after they found his body? lol I think Marlo just wanted to see the King dethroned! Like you said maybe a respect thing, passing the crown. Great reaction to the finale! 'Where's S04 going to go?' .........great things, cant wait for 4x1!!
