I don't know if you've noticed this, but one thing I absolutely love about this show is that there is no traditional music score. All music (outside of a few montages) comes from a source. So that beginning scene was just background chatter of the people outside, to the sporadic gunshots and yelling, and then to the police sirens that led to the mother's scream over scenes of an empty corner. There wasn't this swelling of intense or dramatic music during Bodie's gunfight and there wasn't any music cue when the mother was going to check in on her kid. Even D's final scene was just him struggling in silence. To me, it's the lack of fanfare for these characters that makes them feel equal in importance on this show and it makes the show feel more real.
