If I remember right this episode was actually supposed to be before episode 20 which is why Jesse wasn’t in that episode, I don’t remember why they swapped it to this order though. And you didn’t imagine anything, I think Jesse was actually genuinely starting to care for Rachel but he’s someone who likes to win and be the star which is why he rejoined vocal adrenaline and had to prove his loyalty to them by putting an egg on Rachel’s head. The songs this episode aren’t my favorite either, the only one I really liked was another one bites the dust tbh
