I've done 3 combat tours. IEDs, snipers, fire fights, didn't bother me that much. Scary yes, but exciting, dare I say kinda fun. You know what is pure anxiety producing, hearing a 'thunk' in the distance knowing that a mortar is incoming and i have no way to knowing how to evade it and I won't be able to stop the next one from firing.

On drone warfare: it’s possible, ultimately, they’ll be more dangerous to the political class than to soldiers. What is the point of war? To force political outcomes through violence. In a conventional war, you invade a country, fight to their important/capital city, and force them to accept your terms. This may or may not require killing their leaders. But what if you have drones that can simply decapitate the leadership without spending billions on fighter jets and carrier battle groups? What if you can fly a drone swam over a motorcade or capital building and destroy it without a conventional war? I don’t think the geniuses who run this country understand the Pandora’s box they’re opening. Or maybe they do, but have no means keeping it closed. Either way, if you could program a drone to kill anyone on the planet, why bother sending it after some lance corporal from some cow town? This may be the beginning of the end of humans amassing to fight over territory. If so, it will be a fundamentally more dangerous era for important people. Look at the drone assassinations the US has carried out in the Middle East over the past two decades. Who gets killed? High value targets. Up until now, this required airspace control, which necessitates a strong conventional military. But what if you could release a drone swarm from the back of a uhaul truck? Would you bother gaining control of the airspace? The world will continue to get weirder. Buckle up.

McCaffrey's maternal grandpa was an Olympic sprinter too. He got it honest.
