The US had trouble popping drugged up, berzerking guerillas charging them during the Moro Rebellion in the Philippines. They found their .38 service pistols in adequate and had to revert to using old .45 Colt service revolvers. It prompted the US to put out a request for a new pistol, preferably semi-auto and at least .45 in caliber, resulting the the eventual selection and adoption of our beloved 1911.
