I think the US fate will mirror Rome's. After the Empire falls, the Byzantine state persisted for a very long time as one of the richest and most powerful states in the region despite it's decline and idiotic religious civil wars. I think the US will still be relatively rich and powerful despite constant decline and idiotic racial civil wars for many decades. The big wildcard is that China's military history is insanely comically bad. Like 30 marines defeating 6,000 Chinamen, or 400 guys on horses defeating 30,000 infantrymen.

As to the proximate cause of the 2022 invasion (actually the crescendo of a low-intensity civil war that had been simmering since 2015), I heard that Ukraine was moving to cut off the Crimean water supply.
