Micro HiFi - Aiwa system 22
Added 2023-05-06 10:41:44 +0000 UTC
Here’s a new video about an old Micro component system.
I have the vaguest of vague memories of seeing one of these in a shop window in the early eighties and thinking that due to its size it must be a HiFi for kids. In fairness I didn’t have a clue what was going on back then. Some things never change.
Here’s the video - https://youtu.be/TMtqWGsvLaU
It was a bit of a struggle getting this one made. It seemed to take forever to get started although the editing side of it went smoothly. It’s hard to pin down exactly what the problem was but I definitely wasn’t firing on all cylinders. I think you can see this in the end result.
Just one extra thing to mention - if anyone has bought one of the new metal mugs from the merch store, they tell me that just to be on the safe side rather than using a dishwasher, you’re probably better off hand washing them.
So that’s it, a bit of a shambles this time but I’ll start over again fresh with a new slate on Monday. Take care and have a great week.
UPDATE: A couple of tiny edits. Video has been re-uploaded.
This is superb. Had a look at R*cher Sounds for latest kit, with everything, OMG 17k!!!

Reminds me of the Sony TA-88 and related components, though that's still a bit larger than this.

Thanks for trying a mug. I barely make anything on the merch, but it supports an independent business - which I think is worthwhile.
I think I might have had my last drink. The last one made me very ill for a few days, I think it clashes with all my other meds and conditions - so it’s best to avoid it.
I have dabbled with retro gaming off screen for decades, but it always loses my interest very quickly, despite spending a lot of time and money getting things working. Playing games is for people with time to fill, but my time is always taken up with something more immediately pressing. I’m better off leaving games to the specialist channels - and there are plenty who do a very good job covering them, much better than I could.

Hi peeps ( and Matt) just a general question.
I collect various stuff from the 80’s era.
The stuff that I couldn’t afford as a kid.
My stash ( hoard) is growing slowly as I spot various things.
The thing is……… have you all got any plans as to it’s future when we’re not here.
I’m sure my kids won’t be bothered with it.
Any thoughts greatly appreciated. Ian.

I will be buying a metal mug. I spent about 20 uk pounds on a mug from a bloke on youtube called Jimi the hobo. It broke that mug, now used to store pens etc Jimi was and is a drunk. I don't hang around drunks now. Too many people have drink problems. Coping with reality- escaping from it. So glad I clicked on this bookmark- yours are the best of youtube for pure entertainment and fascinating learning. My first minidisc deck I bought broke tried to fix it with a belt springs fell out, sold as faulty with all the bits, 2nd deck has a cd player too, seems okay, these things were built to last, but they don't, hi fi of 80s and 90s was and so is quality now, so you are a massive influencer on how I spend my disposable income, not going to buy a DJ CD deck though, was in ebay watch list only, it would be madness to buy the good stuff you showcase. Nintendo are really horrible when it comes to censoring and striking youtubers- but it would be well good if you had the sand to get a wii or wii u and get it 'chipped' by software mod and showed us amateurs what reto gaming looks like on these not forgotten consoles. Waffle over, hope you are well Matt. Keep on keeping on. Good luck to you fella, you deserve your breaks, I know how hard you work. Cheers man.

It does feel very nice to use - it’s a shame we lost that. There’s nothing satisfying and tactile about a touch screen.

If you like broken things, you’re going to love the next video…
Oh and yes the higher shot is handy and it also utilises a nice camera that I wasn’t using, so buying that feels less wasteful now. As for health, been rather ill this week - but I’m finally out the other side and able to get back to editing.

The switchgear looks (and probably feels) very pleasing. Particularly the two way switches that govern the speaker inputs etc. I love the metallic construction. These days it’s so often plastic with metal “paintwork” that is disappointing to operate. A lot of the modern denon stuff retains that solidity (apart from their terrible remote controls!) I’m thinking about their dm39/40/41 stereos which sound amazing.

Hello once again Mat!
I won't lie, near the 4 minute mark when you say "I haven't plugged it in yet, I hope it works", I said to myself - "man I hope it doesn't so we can get a repair video out of this one". The repair stuff is always my favorite, I sincerely love seeing old technology showcased and repaired and you and MyMateVince are my favorites at that particular genre of video.
Aside, I like the newer, higher angle shots, very nice.
Thank you for another brilliant video! I hope you're doing well.

greetings fellow vinyl afficionados. I bring great tidings of a wonderous forthcoming event. Audio Technica will be going live with the limited release of the new Soundburger as of May 31st. 2 colours too choose from, and a 3rd European only colour sometime in summer. I should think that Matt would be gifted a gold plated one after all the free publicity hes given them!!!!!

I spent hundreds of pounds on a Yamaha system that uses MusicCast to connect devices via Wi-Fi in their range together - in this case their turntable and an amp in a different location - I share your annoyance when I realised I had to use an app on my iPhone to connect the two together every time I use the system. I don’t want to be staring at a screen to enjoy music - it’s what killed Apple TV when they took the audio output channel off it to force people to use their screens to ‘watch’ music.

I have shelves that still look like that; they also did in college. Pepto Bismol is the gloop? I had headphones that sort of looked like those in college, Sony MDR-CD10, but yours are not Sony? Let's see, what do we have to watch - Survivors, Tripods, Black Adder, Touch And Go. After that, read a bit of comedy sketches and listen to some Island Records CDs, and then I'll swipe your BBC 1 clock and coffee. 😉

Late to the party here. I can't imagine just having a speaker in the room, that you shout at to get it to play something. Just seems so faceless. I've got walls of various media formats, all arranged nicely by genre, band and year etc. Half the fun in life is collecting this stuff. I'm a former librarian, so maybe there's some of that in there too. On the other side, dozens of university aged "kids" at the last record fair I went to. Probably all got Crosleys, mind you.
Here's my room when I was university age. I've no idea what the pink gloop in the bottle is...

Maybe it's just me, I'm unsure how the 110/220 slider switch would work if it was designed for US/JP plugs. The US is 110v and Japan is 100v isn't it? Would you use an adapter to make it work with the UK's 220?

This series has come along at just the right time as I am debating exactly this problem. I don't have a hifi in my living room and want to rectify this. My requirements are - it must be able to connect to a phone or tablet to access my digital music collection and internet radio, I still have a lot of CDs so a CD player is needed, I don't have any cassettes but a cassette player would be nice for the nostalgia and although I have a decent record deck this is only used to digitize records, so doesn't need to be connected. My options are - an old system like the one featured here plus a bluetooth adaptor, this would do everything I want but might be unreliable, a newer old system also with a bluetooth adaptor, which would still do everything, might be more reliable and have a DAB radio but have a poorer cassette deck, a modern bluetooth system with a CD player, or a pair of bluetooth speakers with at least one aux input to connect a separate CD player. I'm currently leaning towards the last of these, but I am now looking forward to the rest of this series with some anticipation.

I was just thinking it reminded me of a Space:1999 kind of thing and there you were with the reference. Your silver one looks a lot like the old JC Penney MCS audio gear, lots of metal trim and lower case letters 😂. A beautiful system too bad about the problems, look forward to the next ones.

RE: the last point you made about features not being available anymore. I was thinking about that during the video with the preamp and sure enough that's the component you featured for that end discussion. I wonder if in THAT context it would be a worthwhile effort to replace and/or upgrade the electrical components for the purposes of, say using it for 78s.

A dead or flakey channel on a cassette deck is often due to dirty contacts on the record/play switch. Find the switch linked to the record button and spray some Deoxit into it. Not a guaranteed fix, but more often than not it helps.
And the Hi-Blend button on the tuner is not completely mono -- as its name suggests, it blends only the high frequencies to mono, while leaving lower frequencies in stereo, which does a good job at cleaning up the hiss of FM Stereo while still preserving an acceptable amount of stereo separation. (Lossy digital encoders do this too, to save bandwidth -- low-bitrate audio streams often blend everything above 3 kHz to mono.)

Not all trainspotters are model train enthusiasts, and visa versa. I think your talents and interests are in the world of presenting and demonstrating these audio units in a historical context. Someone who would go to the ends of the Earth to get a bespoke part and demonstrate the repair on a youtube video has a totally different focus and set of priorities. And indeed, there are folks on youtube who do just those sorts of videos. I like to watch the fellow who rehabs old gaming consoles, right down to re-whitening the plastic cabinets. But those producers don't discuss the history of the technology or the evolution of the gaming systems (for the most part. There is one making hybrid history/repair but he sort of "gives up" after a brief dust-off!).
I will note I have liked the few game system videos that you have presented. The Vectrex and the Magnavox Odyssey ones are two of my very favorite "Moans".
That being said, I do enjoy a good problem solving activity. It's a bit like Mr. Puzzle! (If I can drop another youtuber's nom de channel!)

What that floppy wooden case could really use is a solid rear panel (with a cutout to let the cables through, of course), or at least some generously sized corner brackets. That will take a lot of load off of the corner joints so they just have to hold together and not hold a right angle.

I had one of these as a teenager. I would have been 13 years old when my mom and dad bought it for me. I loved it especially how it felt so well built even though it was that small. I did like how the components were truly separate (even if four separate sockets were required), I remember similar Sony systems had a ribbon cable joining the units at the back because they shared some components (like the PSU) and that meant you could not re-arrange the stack but must arrange it in a fixed order.

This is one of the better looking mini systems from the late 70s/early 80s. I’ve always had a soft spot for these because while they don’t look like “serious” gear, they are well-built and [used to] pack quite a punch. I’ve been trying to complete my Akai UC-5 micro system for years; you can search on google and find a photo or two floating around Reddit.
I’ve had more problems trying to fix my Akai system than I’ve had time to enjoy listening to it, but you are absolutely right Mat as to why people choose to get into these things. If you know what to expect and you can live with the constant fiddling and maintenance, then they are wonderful conversation pieces when someone comes to visit your flat.
Other than that, they no longer serve any practical use, as their “micro” nature is laughable by today’s metric. Hooking mine up is also a nightmare as all SEVEN individual components have their own power lead.

I love micro/mini systems so I enjoyed this. It's something about the form factor that appeals to me. Specifically the ones with separate components that look like a shrunken normal hifi.
When I was researching mini systems a year or two ago to buy one, this Aiwa was on my shortlist simply because it looked so cool. But after I had a good think about it I decided that getting something newer would be better. You touch on this idea from time to time in your videos and it's really valuable and worth repeating - don't just buy something because it looks cool, really think about what you need for your situation and how you're going to be using it. One of your past videos prodded me to think more critically about what would best work for me.
In my case I ended up with a used Technics SC-HD55 from 99 or 2000 in good condition that sounds great, and has so far been very reliable. It's very early-2000s looking, nowhere near as cool as the Aiwa but it works well and I dig the pointless blue lights. Anyway, thanks for the closer look at what I didn't get, beautiful little system.

If you'd like to take a look at a DCC micro system, you might want to look for the Philips FW68. Or not, because it's a piece of crap :-)
The FW91 mini system with DCC91/DCC450 is much better built, has a better equalizer, more buttons, a better display, and is much easier to service because it's not a single circuit board hanging from the volume control. But the FW91 is not a micro system.

Systems like these were really quite fashionable and a talking point in the early 1980s. An XR4i driving project manager I worked for (or more accurately my boss worked for) had a similar Hitachi System.

The brushed metal look is really nice to look at. Back then, the home stereo system was also the centrepiece of the living room (next to the TV). The more buttons and flashing lights it had, the more of an impression it made. Nowadays, manufacturers try to make their devices as colourless as possible. The bezel of a modern TV is barely visible, smartphones are black cuboids with round corners and smart speakers are round cylinders with as few buttons as possible and a couple of LEDs. Not necessarily bad, but definitely a different form of aesthetics.
Thanks also for highlighting the problems these old devices have. Who knows how many people buy them out of a nostalgic impulse, only to find that these devices rot away inexorably if you don't put a lot of work into them. A fate that retro computer enthusiasts share.

You are your own worst critic. The video is not as bad as you perceive. My thoughts:
• voice-over microphone sounds seamless against lavalier - very good result with the new mic
• 15:42 - artfully displayed HP-01 😉
• I also noticed, as you did, the speakers were struggling more than I'd expect - by looking at them I thought 'where is the bass I should be hearing'
• I'm over 40 and I don't work perfectly anymore, sad to say
• 32:58 - those speakers appear to have control knobs under the grilles, yours do not 🤔
• it's a fine-looking system, despite the missing faceplate (I didn't notice until you zoomed in)
• I'm very much looking forward to next installments
I can foresee one tedious question arising 'did you try it with different speakers' but that would defeat the purpose of demonstrating this system as a whole unit.
That's it, then - all the best for now - enjoy whatever you get up to until next time. 🤍

Nice pick with the Aiwa system, I recognized the layout of the front panels and later, you identified it as a "relative" of my old, inherited "Wega"-modules (T210/PV210/CV210 (C210 broken+lost). Since they have been used as an office stereo through the 80s and 90s, everything is crackling, popping, humming and has contact issues so a complete refurbishment would be necessary to be able use it again. Maybe I'll pass it on to sbdy with the time and skills on their hands. Take care !

I was one of the people who made a comment about collaborating with another YouTuber. I suggested it as more of a once off content idea, rather than something I think you should do with each piece of equipment that doesn’t work. Sorry.

Great video, and I really like the idea of a "mini"-series based on one concept!

A few years back, I picked up a component from a late '70s micro hifi at an auction; the tuner from an Aurex 15 Micro System circa 1978. Set me back a whopping $5 dollarydoos. Now I want the rest of the components to complete the set, but I suspect they're unobtainium in 2023.

I wish I had room for one of those. I like the look of that. The tape deck reminds me of a car stereo, but the rest of it looks awesome. Like a tiny little rack mount system. Shame it didn't work properly, but that's part of the risk we take with vintage equipment. Video was great, not a shambles at all!

I like the idea of this series, reminds me of your 4-part series on putting together a budget hi-fi from a few years ago.
Here's my great idea for a YouTube electronics repair channel: It's called "Mr. Binnit's Lab" in which Mr. Binnit reviews vintage stereos needing repair that viewers have sent him, which he then... you can probably guess what he does next.😉

It wasn’t deliberate - it fell off, but it wasn’t a great loss.

Nice idea for a series, looking forward to the next episode!
And you really nailed it with the enthousiasts thing: yes, keeping old stuff running you do because you like to thinker with it, I'm such a person: the "ritual" of playing a record or reel-to-reel tape, and maintaining the machines for that gives me pleasure ;-).

I laughed when it got to around 21 minutes and the aux passthrough test. Up until then I had been thinking to myself "I really don't like that off angle Made in Japan sticker on the front". Ruins the asthetic a bit. Sure enough it was removed!

Very kind of you to say so. This really isn’t one of my better efforts though. Hopefully the next one flows better.

Not a shambles at all, Mat. You're very tough on yourself these days. All of us here love your content. You're one of the last, genuinely great content creators about.

Yes. Not sure when it started. If you hadn't pointed it out, I probably wouldn't have noticed
BTW I'm using Firefox so if you're using something else it's not your browser

Oh no! Coronation and a Techmoan video at the same time. Quandary.
Sorry, The King wins today. The king of retro tech can wait until later.

I'm obviously oblivious because I didn't realise you were selling merch! I'm assuming it's techmoan.com? Because I'm getting an https 'secure site not available' message when I go to it? Or is it just me...?
