Techmoan EOY Oddcast 2022

A quick Patreon extra video right at the end of the year to thank everyone for your support.

There’s also a section about the eclectic mix of cameras I took on holiday.

https://youtu.be/097Z9XKjB9w

The start of the video is a bit jump-cut-fest, but it settles down. I needed to get my speech warmed up, it's been a few weeks since I've uttered more than a couple of words at a time.

If you’re having/attending a celebration to see 2023 in, enjoy yourself, take care and have a good one.

UPDATE: Seems my maths regarding the ratio of subscribers to patrons was way out in the video - I blame touch screen calculators combined with sheer incompetence. Regardless  - you're still in a very small minority when it comes to earth's inhabitants and that reminds me of a humourous saying
'Always remember that you are unique...
just like everyone else'

Got some bug I cannot seem to shift completely so I'm having yet another day at home off work and a catchup of videos I've missed. Really impressed by that little zoom camera - for 1080p it does really well.

LANDLINEMAN.com

Yes it’s great fun, the Mrs enjoys it too. We’ve got into the habit every Sunday evening of watching Me & Mon Ami and then Crusing with Ben & David on YouTube - it’s probably the ‘televisual’ highlight of the week.

Techmoan

Sorry, I'm new to this. I wanted to thank you for recommending Me and Mon Ami to watch. I would have never picked this one out, (or had YouTube pick it out for me), but I quite enjoy the romps around the Rivera with Halloween, Elton, Mr. Boo, and Tim. Thanks for the advice.

CrimsonPig808

I enjoyed seeing the footage from the different cameras - it's always interesting to see new places. That section could almost go in a standalone video. Another reason to use a proper camera instead of a smartphone is the reduced chance of it slipping out of your hand and into the sea. I wonder if future marine archaeologists will be able to plot cruise liner routes from the trail of phones on the sea floor.

David Boddie

Awesome video! I was looking out for that sony camera too. But here in the Netherlands it was sold out everywhere. Even got some orders canceled when I thought I managed to find it. Eventually went with the ZV-1

Mels Van Wees

Late to this - but, I suspect a lot of people who signed up for Patreon just enjoy your content and (hopefully) aren't expecting endless content throughout the year. Rest up, take care and we'll see videos whenever they show up.

Shawn

I have been watching a long time, so I should have become a member a long time ago.

Richard Scalzo

Everyone is unique, but some are more unique than others.

Lord Brannigan-7

Glad to hear your comment that you do OK from YouTube Premium views. I'm one and always wondered how the Premium fee split compared to advert income.

Robin Capper

I stumbled upon the channel also during the first summer of the pandemic. But I believe Youtube remembered that I had googled reviews of a window cleaning robot

Raul Ramos

My reason for Patreoning is vidcasts like Mat's really kept me going during Lockdown and beyond. I can't afford to give something back to all the content providers, but the Techmoan channel is my favourite. I'm happy that content will be reduced this year (it sounds like you need the break), I just wanted to thank you.

Richard Foster

Hi Rowan. I too watch YouTube videos almost exclusively on my TV, do you have any advice on how to play patreon content using a TV app?

Simon Arnold

Bonne Année Mat! glad that you & Mrs Techmoan had an enjoyable respite.

Eric S. Tyrer II

I think you must be amongst the first people to support me on Patreon there are some user names that I recognise as always being there and you’re one of them. Best of wishes to you and yours too.

Techmoan

‘the Techmoan effect’ — noun phrase; the phenomenon whereby a notification of a new Techmoan video causes the immediate cessation of other activity until the video has been viewed.

Matthew Hunt

I'm sorry you've had such a rough year, Mat. Just remember that you are a huge part of making all of our year more bearable. Thank you for everything you do! Here's to a happier New Year for you!

Sam Watts

Happy new year - great to see a big subscriber boost, well deserved! You mentioned Patreon potentially being their own video host in the future - from the “content consumer” side, YouTube is the best option. Plays nice with and across all devices, easy to watch on a smart tv etc. wish there was another option, maybe Patreon’s implementation will check all the boxes, but as of now when there’s something on Vimeo or elsewhere it’s a bit frustrating. Just one guy’s opinion.

Steve Jobs (of Apple)

Late message but just wanted to drop by and say hello again Mat. Been a patron for many, many years at this point. I've subscribed to others over the years and those others have come and gone, but my subscription to you has remained. You're the first creator I became a patron of and I hope to continue for years to come. Excited to see how this new year goes content wise and I sincerely hope you and the wife are doing well.

ashasaur

I get great pleasure watching Your videos. Keep uploading! Many thanks for your hard work, hope the health issues improve. All the best, happy new year!

Stewart Webb

Mat — Happy New Year. As a fellow Brit who has lived in California for the past 30 years — I've been subscribed to your YouTube channel for a number of years and figured out it was time to add some extra support for 2023 on Patreon. Keep up the good work.

Taylor Johnson

Very cool cover of Tijuana Taxi. Is there more music, or safety announcements such as Mat's "Tapes On A Plane" video? Seems odd to use an R2R on an airliner, but maybe it was used to make dupes on some sort of cassette.

Mark Hesse

Absolutely love your work Matt. I’m one of your Patreon newbies. Your integrity and honesty really come across in what you do. Keep up the great work! Hope ‘23 is a good one for you.

Neil Jones

Happy New Year my friend!!

James Clark

Re: Patreon support while your reduce the volume of your output. My logic is that by spending more time on background research and avoiding the need to put out what you deem "filler" we'll get higher quality content (no pressure!) but you'll get paid less (due to fewer view minutes), which seems unfair. Those are the cases I'm happy Patreon is there to support.

kalleboo

On the topic of shooting with phones - for a few generations Apple sold a "smart battery case" that had a physical shutter button on it, that would also turn on/open the camera app. As a father of small kids, this was perfect for capturing spontaneous moments. They haven't made them for the latest generations of phones and having to try to get into the photo app has lost me so many moments, I'm tempted to buy some slim pocketable camera!

kalleboo

Please don't use the Patreon video player because that would mean people like me won't be able to watch your Patreon videos on their television. Other creators have already tried the Patreon video player in early access and while it works okay it lacks a lot of features.

Rowan Kerseboom

Happy New Year Mat! Loved the 2022 wrap up and the extra detail on the items was great. I think 2 or 3 in a month of your usual good quality videos with your quirky quips (which do make me laugh out loud) and normal persons attitude to the item you are talking about is far more desirable than trying to meet 1 per week. I like the longer videos too with the story and context of the item. I think it must be an age thing I'm guessing I'm roughly similar age to you so I'm not part of Tic Tak, prime drinks, shorts generation with a 2 minute attention span. All the best... Chris

Chris Palin

Disappointing Photos - Yes! I've always felt the same, however, I _think_ I found the solution, certainly for me anyway – HDR Live Photos. They seem to bring to life that moment, especially where there's a bright and expansive image... ironically like looking out to sea! So, my iPhone 13 or 14 (I loose track) coupled to viewing them on an HDR screen seems to do it.

Michael Thwaite

Happy New Year Mat, it's been a tough year on you but you've helped keep the rest of us sane and happy. Don't worry about the slow down, its the Quality of your videos that keep bringing us back to you, not the quantity. Have a great 2023 and look after yourself, take a time out when you need it. :)

Chas Large

Happy New Year Mat! I'm one of those random New Patreon supporters but, probably like most, have been following channel for eons. More than happy to give a small token of appreciation back. Your honesty around channel / life balance really struck a chord with me and I certainly support you in taking a step back from the sheer amount of content. I'm so impressed with everything you've made to date - and even if it's only a video every couple of months, I'm totally on board! I personally hit a roadblock with my own channel mid 2020 after making a video which, to be fair, wasn't well researched so it took a lot of criticism. For the most part people are lovely in comments and twitters, but jeepers, when the keyboard warriors fire up, it can all get quite vicious and can spread to forums and all sorts. After a couple of weeks, I just hit delete on that vid, and that was the last content I published! It makes me appreciate your style of reiterating that you might not be right and also the effort you put into mitigating where people might get a bit emotional if they see something they disagree with (!! god forbid!). So seeing the end-of-year-wrap-up where you filled in various gaps, addressed assumptions and put in a few updates was absolutely fantastic. I might do the same at the end of this year, although with a 10 year look back / update. On holiday cameras - I've also had the RX10ii (great camera, same thoughts) so "downsized" to a used RX100 a month ago as I've just visited some remote areas only accessible by seaplane. The Lens assembly broke on the first day (lens error) so I ended up just enjoying the wilderness. If only there was something pocket-wise like the microMV but with an SD card, 4k picture and Sony's improved steadyshot. I've had a great run with Sony (have an A7C too) but feel their consumer video cameras haven't been revisited for years. I can't believe how average that Canon looked - what on earth is that zoom mechanism?! Anyhoo - have a great 2023. Hopefully you get to enjoy some of the books and bits you've collated and cheers for all the hard work and excellent adventures into random technology thus far.

cTrix

Really happy you shared the pics from the Ricoh, I was seriously considering getting one, but man the white balance or something on that camera seems quite off. Thanks for saving me some money!

Longplay Games

Thanks for the tips. I’m not planning on using it for taking photos, well perhaps the odd one at a pinch…but really its intended use is as a video camera…and only when a long zoom lens is needed. I’m with you on the RAW processing though - life is too short for me to individually edit holiday photos in detail, I’m all for just grabbing a folder of RAW images and getting a software package to batch output JPEGs using whatever auto-enhance option is available.

Techmoan

A Happy New Year, and a brief reiteration of my thanks for keeping me sane this year! I hope to get on another European trip this year, my first holiday since 2019, one that involves overnight on a ferry. I just love wandering up to the deck, when it's dark outside, and feeling the elements on you. I don't stay long, as it's bloomin' cold!

Brad Jones

Mat, fellow DSC-HX99 owner here with a word of caution (tl;dr at the end). I bought it about 2 years ago as a secondary video camera, and used it only rarely since. A few months back my Sony a7R III broke and I had to exclusively use the HX99 for two weeks. I found that I hate it more than I love it. Apart from the missing quality-of-life features like USB-C and external audio input, it has one huge shortcoming - the image processor. For most of those two weeks I was shooting JPG (best quality setting) but the images still looked no better than what my smartphone can deliver, if not even grainier. After some frustration, I switched to RAW+JPG output, and it was night and day! Since I'm not a fan of keeping RAW files, my solution was to import the RAW files to Lightroom and just export JPGs. For the same file size as what the camera saves, I got far better results. But it's not just the quality of the JPG that sucks. Because the lens is so zoomy, at 24mm the image circle is larger than the sensor, so you lose the corners. When outputing JPGs, the camera aplies aggressive distortion to compensate and it looks horrendous. I much prefer seeing black corners in my RAW-to-JPG files than to have people look utterly distorted. tl;dr: When you find yourself disappointed with the quality of the stills, shoot RAW, convert to JPG on your computer, and delete the RAW files.

Asaf Sagi

And we're glad you're here. Happy New Year!

Joseph Dougherty

Thank you for years of great content! BTW, I just upgraded to the "Techmoan Gold Package" - when can I expect my "Flippin' "eck!' Tee-shirt?

David Fulton

Happy New Year, Mat. Above all else, have a safe and healthy 2023. :)

Stephen Bell

Happy New Year!

John Stewart

@5:32 needs to be looped into something wonderful

David Fulton

Infamous, more likely. 😂

Grace Robbins

Happy, fast approaching, new year, Mat. Wishing you all the best for 2023.

david moxon

Nothing actually wrong with the holiday photos you took Mat, they just come across as composed more like a video than a photo. Generally eye level photos with a mid-wide angle lens don't have as much impact as wider angles, telephoto shots or those taken from unusual angles. It's what you would see, so it doesn't seem special. At least that's my take, I'm the opposite and tend to focus more on photos than video. With a video the movement tends to make up for the composition not being unusual and the eye-view of holiday videos seems quite normal, you wouldn't go for wacky angles or odd lens choices unless you were making a film or a 1980s pop video. Hope that makes some sense.

Matt Tester

Just wanted to wish you a Happy New Year, and thanks for ALL the interesting videos you post.

Antonio Monfermoso

I think you underestimate your comic sense/ideas for the puppets. That, blue and blue... and a seagull... Thats puppet worthy to me. I do understand the challenges with silly Youtube regulations, but I dont think there is any lack of material. Thanks!

For what it's worth, the Ricoh images looked like they had a compressed dynamic range—blacks were seldom *black* and whites seldom *white*. It might do with a bit of post processing in a photo software "Curves" tool to boost the contrast in the midranges (loosely a stretched S-curve like a rounded _/¯ ).

Jason Olshefsky

I recently purchased the Sony ZV1 for my holiday which uses the same form factor. Video quality is superb, zoom is excellent and its also great as a standard camera. I was contemplating getting the HX99, but didnt because I needed the best low light perfomance, so will be interested to see how it stacks up!

NoTvandbeermakehomergo

I noticed that myself about the necklace camera. I'm a dead mall video watcher and I wanted to look for a camera that can take decent video like that without the stabilization issue. My Mum's old Samsung Galaxy a20 seems to do the job, but then I'm a bit heel heavy when I walk. The DJI Pocket 2 looked interesting, and I was considering it last year, but decided against it. It's gone up in price since then. I'll have to look into this necklace cam. Happy New Year, and cheers! ^_^

Mandy Roy

Very entertaining as always. In regards to your holiday cameras- the two part action cam footage was extremely impressive. Brilliant stabilization and picture quality. The point and shoot camera has a very "contrasty" image and seems to lean toward the cool side of the color spectrum. Congrats on all the new Patrons. You deserve them all. Wonderful videos- and you seem to be a lovely chap as well. Happy new year.

Andrew Shaw

Looks like you had a great time on holiday. Beautiful scenery. Looking forward to seeing what you have for us next year. Happy New Years everyone.

Chris “Smitty”Smith

I thought I'd share with you all a fun peppy song from the 60's that I found on a Reel-to-Reel Tape from American Airlines - I recorded it onto a Tascam linear PCM recorder and uploaded it for you all to enjoy: https://www.filemail.com/d/ilczlwxequftrss

Grace Robbins

Thanks for the videos this year! I genuinely appreciate them, regardless of how frequently they drop. So speaking for me, look after yourself in 2023.

Darren Porter

Oh no! This entire Patreon lark has just been a cunning ruse by TM to trap and force us all to look at his holiday snaps! It's Slide Night 2.0

Guy Incognito

Nice video, thanks😉

Søren Mikkelsen

The thing about electric cars and range is that range requires a large battery pack. A large battery pack requires a large(r) car. So until we see a quantum leap in battery technology, the tiny city car form factor will only ever have tiny city car range.

Peter Rogers

I've gone off half-cocked on cameras before so I'll do it again, as one of your resident weird camera fans. I have found all the same things you have regarding my desires for cameras and their usage. So as people may or may not know, I'm a big Micro 4/3 fan. High quality, excellent stabilization, small size. However, the larger the sensor, the more difficult it is to create a zoom lens that covers a big enough range. What I do is I bring along a 75-300, which is 150-600mm equivalent, and that will do all the zooming I realistically need, but it does of course limit you on the wide end and it's a fairly large lens. They have 28-400 equivalent lenses but they're big too, eliminating the size benefit. In the situation as outlined here, I would likely take the zoom out for the cruise only, and put on the small 40mm equivalent pancake lens for going around town and pocket use, eliminating the need for the Ricoh (and Olympus also has a small zoom lens with a built in lens cap thingy for you that usually comes with the camera). Regarding action cameras, I've found that same desire to take videos of stuff while walking about, and have done now for about 20 years. My method has been since around 2008 to put a large phone in my pocket and have the lens stick out past the pocket. I have carried multiple phones on me now for 15 years to accomplish this and record 2-4 hours of video at a time. This unfortunately occasionally creates videos like this short one I did 9 years ago. (https://photos.app.goo.gl/EUK1RoZjUXipixMD7). The pocket kind of intrudes on the shot as the phone settled in a bad position. And it isn't looking straight, which at the time I didn't want as wide angle lenses were difficult to use and I wanted things off to the side. I've been looking more into glasses cameras and those headcams, but after seeing the stabilization on your action camera, I may head that route with the necklace function. Thanks for showing that. I might just put my smartphone on one of those. I've seen people do that and it looks dumb as shit but maybe. I think your GRiii is a good camera but you may not be using it to its potential. I have a part time job at a camera store on the weekends (discounts baby!), and I have used it. It's quite nice, but, yes, I agree soulless. It feels like a point and shoot and 9 times out of 10 it is exactly that. A point and shoot. If you're not using it to try and do art or shooting in raw and doing a bunch of weird shit to it in post processing, I would say you can use that new Sony to do everything it can do for things like vacation snaps. Maybe sell the Ricoh while the value is high. I think the promise of the camera is vastly overblown except to guys who are interested in really getting the best out of it, and, as a video guy, you probably are not. Your photos were good photos, but you don't need the Ricoh to make those good. Those would be good with anything. You're definitely CAPABLE of using that Ricoh to its fullest but I don't know if it will be fun for you to get that deep, and you might not have the interest since you're into video. Speaking of the new Sony, that camera looks amazing. Small and extremely zoomy. Hell yeah man. Great buy it seems. I hope you review it if you can maybe casually piece together enough random crap over the coming months to throw one up with comparatively low effort. I would buy one if you reviewed it and found it to be useful in your efforts, since they frequently align with mine in terms of video. I can figure out the photo part on my own, but video, I'm not an expert. That's your department.

Funkmon

Good on Mat for all the new Patrons (I nearly used the forbidden term that begins with [conga] has [rat] in the middle and ends with [ions]. Very cool holiday video clips as well—always better to enjoy the fruits of someone else’s labor and avoid the ‘mal de mer’—thanks Mat! Mat’s observation that the best views are found from the ship rather than the shore was something I had not heard before and may be helpful in ‘land-based’ photography as well. Thanks also to Grace for her curation duties and interesting EBay shopping lists.

Mark Hesse

I've not used my way too expensive SLR for years. It's amazing how quickly we move on with tech. I do just use phone though , love the butterfly fingers joke ..it's so true!

allister mckillop

Graaaaaace! You're famous now! Great video. Talk about refreshed, Mat seemed like he's just had a quinti venti latte.

CBits Tech

Just wanted to say Thanks, Mat! for all your hard work this past year, and I hope you have a banner new year, regardless of how many new vids you do. Best wishes, internet friend.

Myles

That was fun, and glad you’re still even more obsessive than me about taking exactly the right camera kit when you travel. Then spending the time between trips trying to get it exactly right 😉

Phil Collins

Thanks for doing what you do, Mat, you never fail to inform, educate and entertain, as the old BBC moto had it. A happy new year to you, everyone else and especially Grace for reminding me of videos I'd forgotten.

David Peaker

Much better than the alternatives, methinks.

Grace Robbins

How's the Porsche? 😉Aww, that e.Wave X would be excellent for my daily commute. 💚 The tiny camera necklace footage was amazing - the stabilization was unexpected, as I thought it would sway around without a horizontal tether. It's like it's on a gimbal. The pavement in the town you were walking in (Lisbon?) were incredibly white and clean. Beautiful. Thanks for putting this video together; I especially enjoyed the pilot boat clips and the background British Airways music. Oh, and those pesky Femme Bot butts and their thumbs-up... er... (rolls, laughing). Paid? I don't need payment; this place is my flippin' hobby that stops me from going completely insane after (and sometimes during) my real job (but just barely). I'd rather live in a cell and be fed two times a day +steaks on Thursdays and play around here than accept crass payment. 😉😂 Wait a minute... I cannot lie... my secret devious purpose is to win on Jeopardy by answering the entire Techmoan trivia questions category. 👹 Have a wonderful New Years!

Grace Robbins

very entertaining !! I notice that you have never featured a macro lense on any of your revews. I personally love macro images, you can see every day thins in a whole new fascinating light. As for buying your next new car, you may have to be prepared for a long wait for delivery. I placed an order at the beginning of December for a new car to be delivered on1st March when the new reg plates come in, but the main dealer said that due to chip shortage they couldnt guarantee that it would be availabe for that date. May want to bear that in mind when you place your rder. Look forward to a review of whatever you end up with. thanks for a great yea of content.

Andrew Fletcher

Thanks for another year of great content, Mat. All the best for 2023.

OzRetrocomp

I really like your content. I do not know when I joined Patreon but to bad I have not done it from the beginning. I'll rather have fewer videos but better quality. Take care and Happy New Year!

Lehel Bernad

I’m here to support you, rather than your videos. So my expectation is really 0. I enjoy what you output and have enough spare income to add to the pot of various YouTubers. There’s also the back catalogue if current videos are wound down. Hopefully the health in 2023 is as stable as can be and I hope you have a great new year. All the best!

Andrew Kirkby

Welcome. Isn't that what eBay is for ? :-) It is a shame that eBay sales money no longer goes into Paypal as that was a good way of making sure sales cancelled out purchases.

Duncan

The quality of your ActionCam footage was excellent. I was going to suggest a Panasonic camcorder (which Doug DeMuro was using a couple of years ago) but I doubt if that would beat it. Also you shouldn't have the problem of the camera dying in the rain which he had in one video, having to drive the car he was reviewing to a camera shop to get a replacement !

Duncan

You have to remember that you don't really mention your Patreon account so most people won't think about it. It'd be well worth verbally bringing it up every now and then.

evilution

I'm one of the many newbies, but just because I had to find a user for money in my PayPal account, so I started supported half a dozen of my favourite YouTube channels, including you! Let's hope the new year will be better, and I hope that you at least still enjoy making your videos, as I do enjoy living vicariously through them.

Paul Coates

One of those new patrons here. Best wishes in the new year, and hope you can slow things down and find some peace.

Chris Hatchell

Regardless of what 2023 might bring, I am here for it. As I have been for a long time by now (actually forgot when I signed on to your Patreon). Good on you for going a bit easier in 2023…so many creators have really worked themselves raw these past two years and it is starting to show. So take all the time you need. Take care mate! Cheers 🍷

Tim Berghoff

40 minutes until midnight, video is 36 minutes. This will do nicely for my New Years Eve entertainment :)
