Apps that see

I don’t normally feature apps, my interests lie more in physical devices. This week though I’m making an exception to show you one that I found fascinating.

Here’s the video link. https://youtu.be/eEOOGpjSexI

This video follows on from the Kurzweil reader I featured a few months ago. The functionality of a reading device that cost £80,000 in 1979 is now available for free in a smartphone app - and that’s just one of the things it does. It’s really quite amazing but also fun.

I’ve been working hard to catch up on things after my brief holiday. I was only away for three nights but somehow that made me fall behind by over a week. The camera review I partially shot while I was away didn't seem to hit the spot. I'm not surprised, that's why I stopped featuring cameras...most people are understandably happy with their smartphone camera.

Onward and upward. Take care and as always thanks for your support.

UPDATE: I’ve added in a section (starting at 19:53) that explains how a phones built-in accessibility features enable their operation by someone who can’t read the screen. Adding this in necessitated a full re-upload, so the version embedded and linked above is now the new longer edit.

Don’t know if you already tried it, but the app (or actually, the services in azure that are behind the app) will also recognize famous people. Try downloading and analyzing a photo of Michael Jackson or Bill Gates for example; it will recognize and tell who they are.

thank you. that was a good video, structurally, the tie-in with the kurzweil, the crappy intel version, and 10 years later this: wow. also, more generally, love you doing accessibility devices. on this app specifically, keep in mind some images will be sent to microsoft servers. as to your question in the video, i don't think the intel device needs another one, but i hope to see you doing accessibility devices again soon. cheers!
