Character Sprites type Vote
Added 2019-08-05 03:08:56 +0000 UTCHi everyone.
I've promised to make a poll, so here it is.
You probably know already, but there are two types of character sprites:
- static
- animated
And that's the crux of the problem. I need to choose the type, thus ask you to vote for one you prefer. But before you make a choice, you should consider the following:
Animated sprites are quite complicated.
Here is a short demo I made today to show an example of an animated sprite (the link below):
Nothing fancy, I also skipped face animation. Lots of stuff can be improved. But though it looks plain, it took me the whole day to finish it. The reason is simple.
Here is how the static sprite looks like:

And here is how the animated one looks like:

Besides, converting everything into 3d mesh and rigging the animation model also take some time. Even considering that I use a procedurally generated animation mostly.
According to the most optimistic assumptions, I will spend a day per sprite in case of the animated model (not counting the time I need to draw the sprite).
By voting, keep in mind that animated sprites will make the development lengthen. And I can't tell by how much. It's also hard to start doing them right away, so I need some form of compromise.
So, that's the options:
- Use static sprites. It takes almost zero effort to import them into Unity. (Drawing them still a pain though 。•́︿•̀。 )
- Use animated sprites some day.
- Make static first, then create a fundraising goal. Once it is achieved, it's ok to implement animated sprites without harming the current development. It's even possible to outsource it (but I prefer to do them myself)
Comments
While it's clear that animated sprites would be lovely, the community would prefer that the project last a while. As such, fundraising goal, static first, animated after.
