But if he wants to get to Laura, he must get on Ruth's good side... right?
Ohh so that's why he invited her over for dinner, duh!

Yeah, usually the versions that include any letter (ex: a,b,c) are the most recent versions and that means they have been changed and made to fit the actual situation. Glad you liked it.
