I had no idea she's his wife!

I really do like the opening music number but just my personal view Willie was a little grating. She is played by Kate Capshaw which is Steven Spielberg's wife

James

good to know - I'll quite likely put them on the back burner!

camilla

definitely has me looking forward to the next one!

camilla

being covered with 2,000+ insects sounds like a true nightmare 😭

camilla

I definitely look forward to The Last Crusade!

This movie was actually briefly banned in India, due to its largely vegetarian Hindu population taking offence to the inaccurate gross-out depictions of beetle, snake & monkey brain eating. I have fun with this one, but it’s still somewhat silly / low-brow / childish. The Last Crusade is a real return to form for this series imo.

Snakes: Many cultures around the world, including those in Southeast Asia, Africa, and South America, eat snakes. Some species of snakes are considered delicacies in certain regions. Monkey Brains: Historically, the Manchu Han Imperial banquet of the Qing Empire in the 17th century included monkey brains. There are also accounts of monkey brains being consumed in Hong Kong and other parts of Asia. The practice is now illegal in China. Beetles: Insects, including beetles, are a common food source in many cultures, especially in regions with limited resources. Beetles are a source of protein and are often considered a delicacy.

For the bug chamber sequence, Kate Capshaw was really covered with over two thousand insects. She took sedatives prior to the scene to get over her initial fear, and claimed "they definitely worked." This was Ke Huy Quan's film debut. An open casting call was put out to all the elementary schools to find a young Asian actor to play Short Round. Quan arrived with his brother, not to audition, but merely to provide moral support. He caught the casting director's attention because he spent the entire time of his brother's audition telling him what to do and what not to do. Steven Spielberg liked his personality, so he and Harrison Ford improvised the scene where Short Round accuses Indy of cheating during a card game. Quan won the role over about 6,000 other auditions. Kate Capshaw was very critical of her own character, saying that Willie was "not much more than a dumb screaming blonde." The giant Thuggee Chief is played by Pat Roach, who also played the German mechanic fighting with Indy near the plane in Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981). It was meant to be something of a running joke in the series to have Roach's character fight with Indy and always losing, but his role in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989) was largely cut, and he died before Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008) was made.

Raiders of the Lost Ark and Last Crusade are superior films to this one imo, even though this is a dark, wild ride. The other ones can be skipped.

That was a lot of fun. You asked, so I'll chime in on sequels...Last Crusade was actually the first Indiana Jones movie I saw as a child, and I still love it. You're in for a great viewing experience. The newer films that tried to relaunch the franchise were not met with the same amount of love. We were excited to see them, but then immediately angry leaving the theatre. They can easily be skipped.
