Camilla your lack of knowledge or understanding about Soviet society and history is causing me much anxiety. In the Soviet Union the state and the Communist Party controlled every aspect of a person's life. They decided how big an apartment you could have, the quality of food you could buy, if you were allowed to own a car, if you received promotion at work. Books that you can read in any library in America were considered State Secrets. The KGB employed 10's of thousands of agents to spy on Soviet citizens and more spies to watch the spies. Saying the wrong thing to the wrong person could lead from a demotion to disappearing into a labor camp for years to execution. The protection of the State and State Secrets was paramount.

An American History class when discussing the 20th century should spend at least 30 minutes mentioning the Soviet Union, which existed from 1922-1991 and in which was in a "Cold War" with the US from 1947 until the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991. The lead guy in the meetings is Gorbachev who was the last leader of the Soviet Union. Gorbachev had that distinctive birthmark on his head in real life. Gorbachev won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1990 for easing Cold War tensions. From 1956-1991, the Soviet Union was Russia + 14 Republics. The Soviet Union additionally controlled much of Eastern Europe.

"... all victories inevitably come at a cost." The line “something that has never occurred on this planet before” is striking (puts the situation into perspective). As you may have deduced, that line is referring to what was happening inside the reactor. I remember when Europe detected the radiation. I was a chemical engineering student in college in 1986 and understood in general the significance of what was happening at Chernobyl. Terrifying. The end of the episode with the darkness and the dosimeter clicking like crazy is scary. The 3 guys have to open the valve and then get out. Other workers will operate a pump at the surface to pull the water out of the tanks through the open valve and piping. When a person comes in contact with radiation, a better word than "infected" is "exposed." Also, the burns are radiation burns. The Chernobyl incident (1986) was before the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 and before the end of the Cold War in 1989-91. The Cold War formally ended in 1991 with the dissolution of the Soviet Union but in practice really ended for the most part in 1989. In 1990, my wife (at the time) and I visited Budapest (Hungary -- a Soviet bloc country) -- it was the first week you could get into Hungary with a US passport without a visa. When crossed the border into Hungary by train from Austria, it was striking because Hungary seemed so much more poor and drab than Austria. Of course, Budapest had beautiful architecture. In Budapest, we stayed with an old couple in their apartment for US $7/night. Taxis were 50 US cents.
