💙💙 ah yes! I've been hearing that there was a great effort put into the casting which is so nice to hear.

The show creator, Hwang Dong-hyuk explained his reasoning behind it. To quote: "At first, we considered casting a transgender actor to keep the role authentic. However, during our research in Korea, we found that there are very few actors who are openly transgender or gay." In the same way that Korea's culture and acceptance of the LGBTQ community is still a bit more traditional, I've been told from various people that there's also a lot of prejudice given to foreigners - aka Ali in season 1. I therefore love the symmetry in the first game, when everyone suddenly realises this is a life or death situation, that Ali & Hyun-ju (the foreigner & the trans woman, the 'worst of the worst' of Korean society) are the ones that given the first chance to show what kind of person you are, choose to go out of their way to help their fellow man. What a great choice in a show so chock-full of social commentary.
