The dark patterns going into that light orb when Subaru uses Shamac is reflecting the Shadow magic (his own alignement, as stated by Puck in Season 1) getting through his Gate (the "portal" thing people have in their bodies that allows to use magic) and damaging it. That's why he says "Thank you" to his own Gate for being able to take it despite being easily damaged (remember how Felix had to treat his Gate in season 1 after using magic) Can't blame you for thinking it could be Satella since her influence whenever he breaks the taboo is also shown with dark patterns like that haha
