Nah, Naomichi is like another version of Ippo. Guy is trying to come out of his shell and follows Ippo hoping for the same path. Yeah, he's a fanboy to tenth degree, but he idolizes Ippo like how some folks in Japan fawn over Pop Idols. It's a little much, but he's trying and that's the point.
