There's no hard limit on the number of defenses you can do. But national championships were barely enough to earn enough to live on so fighters have to make a choice whether to step up to global competition for big bucks or languish till they grow old.

There are some people that still fight pro into their 40’s but it’s usually mostly exhibition matches and whatnot because it’s just dangerous at that age, even for someone like Mayweather; especially considering the damage accumulated over a career. I could be wrong cuz I’m just a casual fan but again, that’s how I understand it.
