I know this doesn't take place in Japan, but that omelette dish is omurice, which is a very common and popular dish in Japan. And yes, ketchup is put on top of it, and it's actually really good. They go REALLY well together. But if you don't like ketchup in the first place, then that probably isn't appealing anyway. If you don't dislike ketchup however, I definitely recommend giving it a try. Also, the rice inside the omelette is sauteed with ketchup to give it a nice orange color, and chicken and onions are often thrown in there as well.
