Remember that Tanba isn't going to go in at all. The Coach isn't allowing him to play until a later round. Tanba's job right now is just to put pressure on the other team. There's no chance of him actually going into the game, but him being in the dugout opens up that possibility when Akikawa had decided it wasn't going to happen. Even that little bit of doubt matters in a tough game like this. It goes from "oh, we just have to crush this pitcher," to "Damn, their ace hasn't even pitched yet."
