It's same as in the Philippines. After High School, you go by the years instead of grades. It's 1st year (ichi-nen sei) high schoolers, 2nd yrs (ni-nen sei), and 3rd years (san-nen sei). I found it strange that Americans reached all the way to 12th grade.
