Kenny Omega vs Bryan Danielson at Dynamite Grand Slam

Watch: https://streamable.com/t7b3w3

Comments

ROH had a triple threat between Kenny, Danielson, and Tyler Black (on my list to nominate eventually). That might be what you're thinking of.

Adam Nelson

Just recheck. You're right, their first singles match did not happen at ROH but PWG. Somehow i remember it was a ROH match lol.

Nathan Morningstarz

Bryan/Omega actually had a comedy match in pwg

Strabisson

This took place in New York City just FYI. Danielson definitely wrestles a different style, but I still love it, I would say this was actually closer to his Ring of Honor style, the place where he wrestled differently was actually WWE in order to fit in better with their entertainment based style, at least at the time, if he were wrestling there nowadays, he likely wouldn’t have to wrestle Quite so differently, of course there are still differences between the AEW and WWE style though.

Legit get goosebumps every time I watch this match, there was something so magical about the first Grand Slam show πŸ”₯ I think it still ranks as a top 5 AEW show of all time imo

ContriteSnake7

Read what I said again

Wesley Wiggins

NOT true There is a match between Bryan and Kenny in the 2000s! Both of them in their early indie careers

Paul Watson

Thanks for the Cattle Mutilation warning. I don’t want to see my brethren hurt. And the ending leads in perfectly to my submission of the Superkliq vs Christian and Jurassic Express!

Bobthekow

Is this Kenny month? Lmao But anyways Great match Kenny's catalogue is insane Especially because this is around the time his body was falling apart and he still pulled off as good of a dream match as his body would allow of him Bryan is someone I'm fascinated to to send more of in a few months he has so many classics yet to be shown There's a reason he's like Top 3 greatest of all time lol

Paul Watson

This match ranks pretty high for me as far as AEW goes. Not too long after this, Kenny was out for over a year. You can imagine what could've been if he was healthy. Even when he came back after that, he was out again with diverticulitis for even longer. The draw was perfectly done. It shattered all current wrestling pre-conditioning at the time. This was also AEW's first time in NYC (McMahon territory). What a match!

City and Local

I hope the rematch eventually happens. If they did this well Kenny was hurt. Imagine what they could do well both are healthy. There is no telling how good of a match these two could put on.

Drew Or Die

Just a little extra info. On Triller TV when they go to a picture in picture break, you get full screen action and commentary. Same as what you get here when they go to a commercial break in this match

BazMan01

Oh guys this show was Arthur ashe stadium at the time this show was aews biggest show they did had 20 000 people there yh was a good crowd yhwas a fantastic match just bit of bummer of ending they never did face again but hopefully when danielsons back they will

Just done watching videos. Some notes: 1. The event was held at Arthur Ashe Stadium & was AEW's New York debut while it's also the company's first event at a stadium (this is a 20,000-seat tennis stadium, part of the reason the show was named "Grand Slam") 2. The reason crowd was so hyped & the commentary called this a "Dream Match" is because it was actually Bryan's AEW debut match, & his first meeting against Omega in 13 years, as these two previously faced off in their first & only other match in ROH, even before Bryan joined WWE & Kenny moved to live & wrestle in Japan. So the idea of these two best wrestlers in the world, now meet again when they have fame, recognization & still perform at the highest level sounds like a fever dream to any wrestling fans 3. I guess Josh already realized but in case you're not the wrestler who you have a toy of is "Macho Man" Randy Savage, who you & Tally have watched against DDP in WCW in one of the recent Patreon requests 4. You're not alone in your opinion about the ending of the match, as it was also me & many's initial reaction watching the match live. But given the context that this is Bryan's debut match, & Kenny, at the time, is still the undefeated AEW World Champion, this is the best case scenario. DQ is, respectfully, a worse way to end this imo, & AEW rarely does a DQ finish. This finish also opened up the chance for a potential rematch, which should have happened later on... ... If it was not for Omega's long hiatus due to injuries, & then Bryan's retirement. They barely crossed path again after this match. Before Ospreay & Okada joined the roster, this was the biggest rematch AEW could offer, & part of me believed they was trying to hold off the rematch long enough for it to get the most interest, without ever considering the risk of the match being held off due to both men's past injury history

Nathan Morningstarz

Bryan was about 15 to 20 years younger in Roh by the way that might be what makes sense for what you're saying

Diruroru

Im sure its better now, he had a 8 month break after losing to hangman

Phil

Alright let’s see if this is a classic.

Steamed Ham Champion Dillon Haggett

Oh! I don't think I picked up on that lol that's cool!

Tallywags

Yes as of now this is the only singles match between the two in AEW. Their only other meeting in the company came during the Elite & BCC's feud in 2023, but that was an Anarchy In The Arena match involving all the faction members.

Wesley Wiggins

Does he still have the vertigo or did that ever get better?

Tallywags

Really?? 😯

Tallywags

What the f is going on this month with the absolute classics. We eating

Diruroru

"That just means there has to be another" Tally I have bad news for you...

Wesley Wiggins

One of the three time limit draws in wrestling I actually think really works

Darth Weirdo

This was during kennys vertigo era as well as a bunch of other injuries he was dealing with

Phil

Here we go can't wait to see what u think to this great match

Ryan Evans

Now, I just started the match so I don't know if you found out by the end of the video but in case y'all don't, this was Bryan Danielson's first aew match.
