2025-02-08 21:11:25 +0000 UTCI think the reason you are getting conflicting explanations for OC comes down to the fact that he has slowly changed as a character over time. Before AEW, and in the early days, Orange was very much a straight-up comedy act. He was just a goofy character in the undercard like an R-Truth. At this point, the whole “he doesn’t care” thing was in full effect. He was just a lazy guy who dint really try and it was a running gag. Over time this evolved into “he is incredibly talented but lacks the motivation to push himself”. Gradually, he would start showing more and more in his matches but would still fall back on the lazy bit most of the time. He got more and more over, and thus his character got put into more and more situations where he needed to put in more effort. So the act evolved some more. The stuff like the lazy kicks and the pockets spots became less about effort, and more about mind games. You see it in this match right here. He’s not doing it because he’s lazy, he’s doing it to frustrate his opponents. This version of OC got fully set in stone when he won the International title, and had a long, gruelling run where he defended it constantly and became the workhorse of the company. Lazy Orange was pretty much dead. He did his mind games a little bit, but like you see in his modern matches, they are a very small part of his work now. Basically, he went from a comedy act that didn’t care, to one of the hardest workers in the company.

2025-02-07 06:10:03 +0000 UTCTrust me when I say this, Orange’s International title run is genuinely one of the best title runs in AEW history (and that goes for any title in wrestling) he had some crazy record of like 32 defenses in like 320 something days, and all of the matches were good to great. As far as his character goes, it’s tough to verbally explain, but actually seeing his character progression from the moment he debuted in 2019 makes much more sense (ik u just started watching AEW this past year so I understand ur confusion). His feud with Mox from 2023 was the real moment that really solidified him as a big star, and where he really started caring about his career from character perspective b/c of the fans and the Best Friends faction. There’s a pretty good documentary on YT that’s goes over his entire title run (its about 100 mins long tho, so I understand if u don’t wanna watch the whole thing for Patreon lol)

2025-02-07 05:17:25 +0000 UTCIf you have HBO max go back and watch the dynamites from 2019 when aew began. Cassidy makes his debut then and you get to know the character a little more and judge for yourself. He had a nice feud with Jericho which was goofy but a lot of fun

2025-02-07 04:13:03 +0000 UTCJR was such a great commentator for AEW, he did a lot of heavy lifting for getting guys over, and I don't feel like any commentator besides Nigel has been on his level there. Whenever he's back on commentary nowadays, the match instantly becomes better.

I don't think he's an insult to wrestling like some claim, but I also don't think he's a genius either. He's just a fun wrestler to have on the show imo, and honestly, his fundamentals are very good.

Pretty sure Ospreay has had like…let me count…28 five star matches (per Dave Meltzer) since this and this wasn’t that long ago! PS this match wasn’t a 5 star match.

2025-02-06 18:30:51 +0000 UTCI love this match! Thanks to whoever suggested it. I feel alot of the lure of Cassidy goes back to the start of AEW. All of his on screen appearances he barely did anything. That sort of character was funny but that will only last so long. He didn't have his first singles match till Revolution in 2020 against Pac. Which they built to. Before that match the movement was "he's gonna try". After that people realised then he's just a damn good wrestler and he wrestles when he needs to. So basically he used to not care but now if it requires his effort he will wrestle. It also lead to him having one of the greatest title runs with the international title. He basically defended the title every week on TV and had great matches and slowly but surly his body was beat up and he just kept fighting till he couldn't no more. It was the complete opposite to his starting character.
