Survivor Series 2019 Men's 5v5v5 Elimination match - Raw v SmackDown v NXT

I don't miss the brand v brand eliminations tbh, but I do miss team v team traditional elimination match. Personally I'm not a fan of the opening portion of the war games match where no one can lose for the first 20+ minutes. In the traditional elimination match I get excited watching teams get whittled down and seeing the people towards the end have big star moments like Dolph Ziggers fight to survive against 3 men, or Jey Uso vs the World. I miss the elimination match a lot, I just wish they could find something better to do with it than "our tv show is better than your tv show even though we're fighting with the people on our own team week to week and not you"

G_Rez

I really miss the brand vs brand elimination match at Survivor Series. I really like War Games, but I think that match should be saved only for when a story line needs it. War Games should be like the faction version of Hell in a Cell.

HahnKirby

You know Vince likes to ruin NXT’s Greatest Talent’s, Look at Ciampa, they changed his character and teamed him up with the miz.

WWE Jay Gaming

It's between that few months of a time period lol

Paul Watson

Dunno why they didn’t just have him get double counted out by fighting with Braun on the outside.

Steamed Ham Champion Dillon Haggett

He really shouldn’t have been anyway since NXT UK had no involvement in the brand warfare until Survivor Series itself.

Steamed Ham Champion Dillon Haggett

Not to mention Adam Cole and Dijak who they saw in the WarGames match from the beginning of this months tally tiers.

Steamed Ham Champion Dillon Haggett

It couldn’t have been October 2022 because Vince was already out.

Steamed Ham Champion Dillon Haggett

I think they’ll eventually do it as a two night show. SummerSlam is next year, I could see the Rumble becoming two nights in 2026 and Survivor Series in 2027.

Steamed Ham Champion Dillon Haggett

That’s great! 😁

TheBlueOne

I have no issue rewatching matches so that Tally can see them on here for the first time. I actually wish it happened more 😆

Dport

I’m also quite curious about one thing in the near future. If you read it Josh, just let me know 😉 I’m asking now in advance because you mentioned in one of your podcasts that you’ll consider rewatching some matches with Tally. One of the first matches you’ve watched on Patreon alone was Adam Cole vs Johnny Gargano (Takeover New York 2 out of 3 falls). I remember that you really enjoyed this one, but to be fair it hits completely different when you’re familiar with the whole #DIY saga. Let me know if it will be ok if I suggest this match again in the future (my math says It’ll probably be may/june, so one year from the first watch along 😁)

TheBlueOne

Ofc we can do it in March. For January I’ll go with the first conclusion: Gargano vs Ciampa III (Last man standing for the NXT Championship). So I can go solo with this one, and help you in February 😄

TheBlueOne

Also i dont know if you use Discord much but i added you because i wanted to ask if you wanted to double team January for the DIY story? Otherwise we can do it in March if you want. I’d like someone’s help for something in February.

Rock said it on SmackDown’s Fox debut a month before this. Lee also beat Randy Orton in his first PLE match as a member of the Raw roster later in 2020 too after his main roster debut.

Steamed Ham Champion Dillon Haggett

Dijak should have been in this match for Team NXT instead of Priest considering Priest lost his match the night before. Cole also wrestled the night before that WarGames match, in a ladder match that week on NXT TV and that weeks Raw.

Steamed Ham Champion Dillon Haggett

Man this is a pretty good match but it could and should have been better. Walter being eliminated first pissed everyone off when it happened and made people think it was a sign of how Vince would book him on the main roster. Thankfully Triple H took over not long after Gunther got called up and the rest is history. Also, Ricochet was dressed as Terry McGinnis’ Batman in Batman Beyond.

Steamed Ham Champion Dillon Haggett

Yeah and somehow it didn’t win on a poll for Survivor Series matches. I was going to submit it but I figured someone else would have.

Steamed Ham Champion Dillon Haggett

I think the only way we would see 5 on 5 matches again is if Suvivor Series goes to a 2 night event. They really seem to like Wargames matches to much

Karen

I remember Adam Cole saying that the day of thr Raw show he got a text telling him to grab his gear and get to the airport. It was Cole, maybe 2 other male wrestlers and 4 or the female wrestlers, and Shawn on a small private plane. Main event that night was Cole vs Brian Danielson, because Brian refused to work Saudi shows.

Karen

Not sure Gunther would have moved to us. He might have just taken his release when NXT-UK folded.

Karen

Gunther is reported that when he started with NXT-UK that had no interest in going to the US or ever working directly with Vince. In fact I think he did make the jump over while Vince wasn't with the company.

Karen

Vince also fired William Regal during the time he was meddling with NXT.

Karen

A huge part of the build-up for this match was carried by NXT. WWE did a Saudi show, and due to some sketchy circumstances we still don't know all the details about, a large part of the main roster was stuck in Saudi, leading to NXT having to fill in on Smackdown. I feel like NXT stepping up to help out and Vince having the bright idea to have NXT go directly up against the newly formed AEW were the only reasons Vince treated NXT so well during this time period, because as awesome as this was, it was so out of place for Vince. That was partially proven true when Triple H started having his heart problems. As a way to get back at Triple H and well he couldn't do anything about it, Vince decided to blow this version of the roster up, start NXT 2.0 and remove Triple H from power in NXT as a punishment for not beating AEW.

Drew Or Die

Good match but still my fav 5 on 5 as match is team bishoff vs team Austin survivour series 03 great match

Ryan Evans

Sure, NXT was doing great at the time, and this particular Survivor Series was supposed to legitimize them as an equal third brand at the time. They went in the summer from an hour-long show on the WWE Network to two hours live on the USA Network, and they had a lot of great talent on their roster as you can see. This Survivor Series is also similar to the time frame of the first episodes of AEW Dynamite, which is one of the reasons why Vince decided to put NXT in a ratings battle with AEW. But what shocks me the most about all of this is how loud crowd reactions and specific chants the NXT stars got in this match. There have been debuts or guest appearances on RAW or Smackdown in the past where casual fans didn't even make a single noise for them. I take it that with the absolute disaster of the main roster in 2018-19, people started to look at NXT a little more kindly at that time 😄 And one last fun fact: literally the day before this Survivor Series, there was NXT Takeover War Games, which you had the opportunity to watch with Tally in early December. It's almost impossible that the day after such destruction, Adam Cole with bandages on his ribs fought in one of the first matches on this show, as did Ciampa and Lee in the main event. Huge admiration for the dedication!

TheBlueOne

Gunther didn't even want to be in the US lol, that's why he was on NXT UK rather than NXT. It took forever for them to even convince him to sign because he didn't want to move to the US. But that doesn't mean it was his idea to be eliminated early, not like being the first eliminated meant he could fly back to Germany right after he was pinned.

Facts

WWE Jay Gaming

Let's be real If Vince was still here Gunther wouldn't be in the company

Paul Watson

It's so funny looking back that Gunther was straight up defiant against Vince Vince hated that he was fat and then rumors come out Gunther asked to get out of this match early So cool Fun fact: there were reports in October of 2022 that Vince was livid with Gunther for saying "Belt" on television and was actually planning to make him drop the IC Title and then bury him...then certain allegations came out Gunther was quite literally saved last minute by unknown circumstances

Paul Watson

Just know that atp nxt had rhea, Bianca, iyo, Toni storm, Candice, an OP Shayna Baszler, and Roderick Strong representing them so their roster was as stacked as possible for this outcome 😂

Woozie

People are saying Gunther's elimination was bc Vince but I recall seeing many reports at the time that Gunther literally didn't want to be in this match lol

Flair

Yeah for some reason Vince didn't see anything in Walter, but it was Triple H's idea to put him in this match as he was NXT UK champion and a good showing would put eyes on that show. Vince, however, was at a point in the late 2010s where he couldn't care less for putting eyes on NXT, or utilising talent that were coming up through NXT, so he just booked him to be the first eliminated. That however made it all the more strange that NXT got the most wins on this show.

Charlie

Fun Fact: Gunther being pined was straight up the first time he ever been pinned in the wwe, cause he was still undefeated. So when we got pinned like that the crowd quickly chanted bull shit for that

WWE Jay Gaming

So a couple of points 1. At this point, the crowd has COMPLETLEY turned on Rollins due to his booking this year 2. The crowd was chanting STD at Corbin because The Rock said he had it 3. This match + the rumble match the following year should have been the start of a monster Keith Lee main roster run but of course, Vince's booking and eventually his health due to covid got in the way

Matthew Harvey

Thats how Vince Saw Gunther lol yaaaaaaaa if Vince was still in charge man would be having a losing streak right now
