Appreciate it! What you see here is generally what you will see in any French match around this time. Like all wrestling, there is variation between each wrestler, but the general style will be similar from match to match.

What a great shout Lucas, nice work 👍 I'll be honest, I was a bit worried about how well this match would keep my attention but it's surprisingly watchable. It holds up way better than I thought it would for its age. I'd be fascinated to know if this style was the norm in France back then, or they were just way ahead of their time.

It's always cool seeing these older matches. Makes you realize just how far wrestling has came

Might do lol

I think in a few months I'm gonna use as my tally tier buddy Rodgers vs lou thez really good match ahead of its time fan of both it interesting when watching these older matches what the fans liked and didn't and what finished matches then it fun to find out

Very interesting submission. Love the variety in content that is suggested.

I think French and British wrestling around this time are like 2 sides of the same coin, similar wrestling styles on paper, but pretty different in execution. The grittiness of these matches definitely varies, with some being more grounded and more mean for a lack of a better term, and some being more flashy without the same intensity. From what I can tell French Pro Wrestling was a combination of more traditional catch-as-catch can and American style pro wrestling, which is why rounds were not implemented.

Glad you enjoyed the submission! To hit on a few points: I think the reason footage of this era of French wrestling started to pop up is simply because people were interested in finding the footage. They weren’t so much lost as they were hidden, I believe most matches were found from French archives I think refs counting slower was just a common practice for most wrestling around the world at the time. The point about this not matching up in the “performative” aspect is very interesting to me! When first watching these matches, the performance aspect was one of the things that stood out to me. The technical and physical abilities of the wrestlers in France at the time are in my opinion the most impressive from this timeframe, so to me the fact that they are doing all of these acrobatic-like maneuvers is the “performance”. I totally get where you guys are coming from though. In terms of what you mentioned about that, there are definitely examples of more contemporary stories being told in France, heels/faces, underdogs trying to overcome the odds, etc. I wouldn’t say there were finishers at this time, but certainly signature moves of sorts, for example when Inca grabbed the ropes while his legs were wrapped around his opponent, he would usually launch them over the ropes and tie them in between them. I might have missed a question asked in the video , if so feel free to ask here.

If I am totally honest, this seemed a bit to fluent with some throws and grapplings etc. for me. Like a Johnny Saint match turned to 11, only with less inventive grappling. For an oldschool match a bit too lttle grittyness, like at no point I thought one tried to hurt the other. But I get why this was suggested, in regards to the speed of things happning this could have very well been a modern match which is quite interesting for 1960. Also as German wrestling Fan it is interesting to see France had no rounds. Any french wresting historians here who know how french pro Wrestling came to be? And why they had no rounds?

ElSche

Well we have the new found Hackenschmidt footage from 1908.... :D

Don’t think we’re gonna see a submission that’s older than this lol.
