Monday Night War - Ep 14 - Foundations of War

Watch: https://streamable.com/f2w2yo

Comments

I enjoy these Monday night wars episodes as individual documentaries to watch every now and then. As a series it was pretty horribly planned. I think if they made 10 episodes, then they'd have the pacing that would make this stuff really hook, even if they can't make each documentary about one single subject. If they had instead just told the story of the Monday night war, and not remind you once every hour about how WCW was really good for 84 weeks and then a year later WCW was really bad, then we might be cooking with Diesel (and not fake Kane Diesel either)

I'm sure that people will probably spam this message at the end of the Monday night war series but there's a sequel docuseries called Ruthless Aggression (it'll show up as Ruthless Aggression 2 on peacock, just switch from season 2 to season 1) if you want 10 more episodes that pick up where the Monday night war left off

No. I think the other time was Main Event Mafia.

Was that the new blood storyline? What other times was he heel? Im actually curious now.

.

He was in late 99 but they turned him back quickly because people just cheered him anyway.

To be honest Sting facing Triple H did make sense because Sting cost The Authority their jobs at Survivor Series. If Sting hadn’t gotten hurt, they absolutely could have and probably would have done him vs Taker at 32 in AT&T Stadium.

Stings been heel a couple of times. In late 99 he was a heel but they turned him face again because people still cheered him.

One thing I think they misrepresented is that NWO Wolfpac were babyfaces. So it's kinda like if Cody teamed up with Jey and Roman to fight the bloodline led by the rock. The issue with the NWO civil was that it was poorly written. I actually don't think Sting has ever been heel in his entire career. Even in the main event mafia in TNA, Sting was still the odd babyface in that faction and the story was about him realizing that they weren't actually helping TNA.

.

I was legit confused why they didn't make a Sting episode earlier in the series. I thought they wouldn't because they couldn't get him on the show due to him working for TNA. But that would have been baffling since he's basically Mr. WCW. Only Ric Flair could rival that.

.

The series has definitely become too repetitive. I'll say this about the bit about different wrestlers saying this guy or that one was the guy though. Everybody at the top of the card then was the guy at some point as wild as that may seem. That was a big reason for the uptick in business. Hulk Hogan turning heel and the NWO formation started the Monday Night War boom in earnest, but before that even happened the star power was pushing the industry forward. One of the early indicators for WCW gaining momentum was them running Savage vs Flair at house shows in 1996 to steadily increasing attendance. Neither guy was even the focal point of the company at that point. In like 1996 Hogan was the guy. In 1997 it was Sting. In 1998 it's Austin. etc. But throughout that period even if there was one standout act there were always several more contemporaries who were nearly as popular.

This episode really pissed me off as they didn’t talk about all the shenanigans that happened on Starrcade 1997 which is essential to know on why Wcw failed.

One day someone will send on in a really good territories sting match from the 80s and yall will see the formation of what would be the crow to come. In one match with Ric Flair Flair was calling the whole thing and when Sting reversed the figure four Ric screams at him “BEAT YOUR CHEST” and he just starts beating his chest and yelling like a monster and Ric is then yelling and screaming in the figure four oh man it’s amazing. Surfer Sting on a first glance might not look like much or a kinda caricature of what a 80s wrestler would be but you gotta see him work and his promos.

Sting’s run in WWE from 2014-2015 was booked horrendously. The obvious thing everyone thought when Sting came to WWE was Sting vs. The Undertaker. But because Vince refused to let people forget that he won the war, Sting jobbed to Triple H in his first WWE match. He then had a random tag match on Raw before losing to Seth Rollins in WWE title match. He was forced into retirement in 2016 because of back and neck problems.

After WCW died in 2001 Sting went to TNA and from 2003-2014 then finally joined WWE and everyone was thinking finally we can get that dream match of Undertaker vs Sting but unfortunately it never happened. Stings WWE run was only about a year and went into the Hall of Fame in 2016. In 2020 he signed with AEW

After WCW was bought by WWE Sting sat out the remainder of his WCW contract as he refused the buy out WWE offered him. Once that contract finally expired about a year and a half later he did two tours of Europe wrestling with World Wrestling All stars. A few months later in 2003 he joined TNA where he wrestled until 2014 being one of their biggest stars. In 2014 Sting finally joined WWE and only ended up making a handful of appearances. Thanks to Vince it was booked horribly and Sting was proven right for never going to WWE earlier. Everything that prevented sting from going there years earlier happened. He left WWE in May of 2020 though he had only made one small appearance since 2016. He then Joined AEW in December of 2020
