Kazuchika Okada vs Hiroshi Tanahashi for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship - Wrestle Kingdom 10 (2016)
Added 2024-09-04 22:00:04 +0000 UTCFrom PKP:
Context (quite long): - For me, Tanahashi is NJPW’s Cena. He is the top babyface, or “the Ace of NJPW.” At one point, he held the record for the most successful defenses of the IWGP Heavyweight title, with 11. - As Tanahashi became the face of NJPW, Okada was still in a developmental program “Young Lion”, where newcomers train in the NJPW Dojo for a few years, work as staff at ringside, and wrestle as jobbers. When they’re ready, they will be sent to partner companies, and Okada was sent to TNA to learn American wrestling for 2 years. - In 2012, Okada returned at WK6 with a new gimmick, “Rainmaker,” on the same night that Tanahashi broke the record of most title defences. He challenged Tanahashi for the title at the next PLE, saying “Thank you for everything you’ve done for this company, but from now on, I will take your role and be the face of NJPW.” While Tanahashi was like “Nah, you’re not.” - Okada shocked the world, ending Tanahashi's 404-day reign on his first try. After that, they faced each other multiple times as Tanahashi started to learn Okada’s style and got his title back. The title changed hands between only these two a few times from 2012-2014 until AJ Styles beat Okada to become the champ. Then AJ lost it to Tanahashi, Tanahashi lost it back to AJ, and AJ lost it to Okada. - This is why you saw that Okada got a huge pop at All In Casino Gauntlet match. He is a big deal in Japan. If Tanahashi is Cena, Okada is Roman Reigns. - In 2015, Tanahashi won the G1 Climax tournament to gain the right (briefcase) to challenge Okada at Wk10. This will be a rematch from last year‘s main event where Tanahashi beat Okada to defend his title and made Okada cry, the 3rd time these two face each other in the main event of WK, and Tanahashi’s 6th WK main event in a row. - Now, I want to ask you guys a question: Is it important to know the finishers of the wrestlers you are watching for the first time? Personally, I think we will understand the match better if we know what their finishers are. When you recognize a finisher, you understand the significance of the moment. However, I understand that for some people, not knowing the finisher can make it exciting because you don’t know when the match might end. So, if you want to know these guys’ finishers before watching, scroll down. Have fun. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
- Tanahashi’s finisher is High Fly Flow (Frog Splash)
- Okada’s finisher is Rainmaker (Ripcord Short-arm Clothesline/Lariat)

Before I knew anything about NJPW, and I really don’t know much about it, I heard the name Tanahashi and that he is their equivalent to Cena. I know little about Okada other than he’s considered one of the best in the world. I’ve watched two matches from him, one was the first match between him and Omega which was extremely overrated, while the other was against Tetsuya Naito which from memory was decent. So I’m excited to give this a watch.

2024-09-05 15:03:12 +0000 UTCTanahashi vs Okada is in some ways a more long-lasting Bret vs Austin feud. Tanahashi/Bret (and Shawn) helped save the company from complete obscurity, and Austin/Okada brought in a new boom period.

2024-09-05 12:13:20 +0000 UTCSince a lot of the NJPW matches you’ve been given so far have been the flashier or more hard hitting ones, it’s nice to now show you this kind of match that is more about a slow gradual epic build. Okada is the master of this type of match, and I have no doubt you’ll see plenty more of them as these reactions go on.

2024-09-05 04:06:09 +0000 UTC“Context” spoiled a lot of other matches though. If you like this, it’s natural to like others. Not sure if there’s a way around that next time.

2024-09-05 03:58:53 +0000 UTCAnother important piece of context is that New Year's is a major holiday in Japan, one of the few times per year people actually have off from work (and it's basically everybody--shops close, etc.) so there's a lot of festivals and events around then.

2024-09-05 02:23:00 +0000 UTCNew Japan was the original company people would criticize for “not having stories” even though they have multi-year, heavily layered stories that are extremely easy to follow. INCREDIBLE MATCH! Looking forward to more New Japan reactions

2024-09-05 00:27:26 +0000 UTCI’m glad you guys liked it! This match was one of my first NJPW matches, and I really enjoyed it, even though I didn’t know much about these two at the time. As for your questions: - Red Shoes only referees the main event and co-main event matches. You won’t see him ref until the last couple of matches on the show. - Wrestle Kingdom is always held on January 4th every year at the Tokyo Dome, regardless of whether it’s a Sunday, Saturday, or even Tuesday. I’ve heard that, in Japan, they don’t refer to it as “Wrestle Kingdom” but just call it the “January 4th” event. - Back then, there was only one night of Wrestle Kingdom, but they would hold New Year Dash on January 5th, which is basically like the Raw after Mania, to kick off new storylines. Wrestle Kingdom 14-16 had two nights, but after Wrestle Kingdom 17, they went back to having only one night. However, next year, NJPW will hold Wrestle Dynasty on January 5th at the Tokyo Dome in collaboration with AEW and other partners, following Wrestle Kingdom. - Yes, you saw Okada in the Anarchy in the Arena match at Double or Nothing and in the Casino Gauntlet match at All In. Okada is now with the Young Bucks, who he became friends with during his excursion in TNA.

2024-09-05 00:09:10 +0000 UTCOkadas Run in new japan from 2013 - 2020 is unmatched. His series of matches with Tanahashi and most famously Kenny Omega are some of the highlights of 2010’s wrestling.
