Dark Side of the Ring - The Final Days of Owen Hart

Just a crazy bit of info/conspiracy theory. So shortly after Owen's passing, HHH got the push up to main event status being presented as 'The Game' and 'The Cerebral Assassin". It came out later that the main event push and that gimmick was originally supposed to be for Owen, he was the one getting the rub and moving up to the next level. But they gave it to Hunter after Owen's passing. So you hear Cornette say in this documentary 'Was there foul play?' and there was conspiracy theories out around that time that it was foul play and that Hunter was upset he got passed over for Owen and sabotaged the stunt to get Owen out of the way. I don't know if there are still people to this day who believe that, I'm sure there are somewhere but I just remember it being a talking point the year or two after Owen was gone of 'I think Hunter was involved'

2024-09-15 04:51:40 +0000 UTCSuch a sad watch. It almost seems as if Owen was ahead of his time. He was doing things in the ring that would pop the crowd even today in this "flippy" style of wrestling we have. Martha works closely with Tony Khan and AEW now and they have the Owen Hart Foundation Tournament each year. I believe Tony has also made donations to the foundation as well. It's a pretty big deal considering Martha didn't want his legacy to be associated with wrestling. I believe they also brought out an action figure. (Btw this isn't about scoring points between AEW and WWE. It was just cool to see the foundation and owen getting to be associated with wrestling again)

2024-09-05 18:43:54 +0000 UTCThere is not one ounce of humanity in Vince. He cares about himself and no one else and this has been shown countless times over the years

2024-09-05 13:33:01 +0000 UTCSteve Austin and the Undertaker main evented that show. I love Austin, and Taker is my favorite wrestler, but I fucking hate that match. For some things, I get “the show must go on” but how in the Hell are they supposed to do a stupid wrestling story about Stone Cold fighting the Undertaker’s cult when their friend/colleague just died, (maybe even in front of them, because of who Austin and Taker were). No one, from the wrestlers to the commentators, wanted to be there, and they shouldn’t have had to be there.

2024-09-05 03:37:13 +0000 UTCThey couldn't get away with continuing the show now. This happened pre cell phones,. If this were to happen now there would be so many video's of it, they would have to stop the show.

2024-09-05 00:13:43 +0000 UTCLike I said I don't remember exactly where I read it, or if it is true. But it doesn't seem to far fetched.

2024-09-04 23:10:12 +0000 UTCI don't remember where I heard/saw/read it but I remember a statement from one of the people up in the rigging with Owen explaining he was hanging in the quick release rig and like it says in the interview he had to be careful to not pull the wire. But at some point the cape of the blazer outfit got messy so he moved his arm to readjust it and then the wire got stuck in the cape and released the clip.

2024-09-04 23:09:44 +0000 UTCThey didn't tell the fans in the building that Owen had died. They knew he was badly injured. No phones. Internet was only at home.

2024-09-04 20:45:08 +0000 UTCSting was inititally unwilling to continue doing this rafter stunt. Sting was the guy who popularized this stunt which Vince wanted to parody with Owen. He wasn't unwilling because he felt unsafe, because he had a professional stunt team and they did it the slower safer way. He felt it would be disrespectful to Owen and cause a fan backlash. He only started doing it again after getting approval from Bret (who talked to Martha about it). I know that Martha publicly gave Sting her blessing to do it recently. The saddest thing about this situation that it wasn't an accident. It was caused by negligence, and Owen would still be alive today and would be highly respected by fans due to his moral character and talent in the ring.

2024-09-04 20:12:24 +0000 UTC100% a Vince call, and it's a call that he stubbornly defended for his entire career. It's also one of the reasons Bret has always had contempt for him and as Bret once put it.."If it was one of Vince's children, the show would have been stopped immediately" and the crazy part is, is that it's not even the ugliest or most vicious thing Vince has ever done. RIP to Owen Hart. Gone but never forgotten.

2024-09-04 20:08:19 +0000 UTCStill remember the day my mum came into my room and gave me the day off school after this happened. A double whammy for emotions is the raw after over the edge. Ouch

2024-09-04 20:07:34 +0000 UTCThis was a very sad one but the story is important. I’m glad yall knew a little bit of the story before you went into it so it didn’t blindside you. Theres been a lot of bad things Vince has done but this is one of the worst. Letting the show go on shouldn’t have happened. His reactions later on in interviews when he’s asked about wrestlers deaths he’s very uncaring, towing the company line and confrontational. There’s one interview where John Stossel starts asking about deaths in wrestling, Vince messes up his papers in his hands and gives him like weird boo boo faces. Vince never in public at least ever claimed full responsibility for anything like this. In private he might have but us as fans/the general public at large never got that “I was 100% accountable for this, I accept all responsibity, etc” None of that. I’m glad yall got to see Bret vs Owen before you saw this to truly appreciate them together doing their thing. I’m a big fan of Natalya and Bret but just I never got into Owen’s stuff. It’s hard for me to get into anybodys life/body of work if they have passed. You can honor that legacy as much as you can by watching what he did and telling people about him, but he isn’t in control of that anymore. People can take that image and do whatever they want to with it. It’s hard with everyone in entertainment and sports that passes because it’s not them anymore. I don’t want to come off as insensitive it’s just when there’s something tragic like this it’s hard to watch somebody.

2024-09-04 20:03:28 +0000 UTCEventually, Bret made up w Vince and returned to the WWE and was inducted into the hall of fame, and quite frankly idk how he was strong enough to do it. After all the shit he was a part of putting that family through, along w how trash a person Vince was, Bret would have been totally justified in holding a grudge forever. RIP Owen, he deserved so much better.

2024-09-04 19:22:44 +0000 UTCToo this day I do not understand why they thought continuing Over The Edge was a good idea. I cannot imagine the state of mind everyone was in that was working for the company at the time or the fans in the arena. Having to wrestle in the same ring that a coworker and chances are, friend, suffered major catastrophic injuries is unforgivable.

2024-09-04 19:17:29 +0000 UTCThere’s also the Netflix documentary about Vince coming out that is six one hour episodes.

2024-09-04 19:15:28 +0000 UTCWrestling has always had this "Show Must Go On" mentality. Even though in some instances, it really shouldn't go on. Like, Jeff Jarrett(Owen's best friend) had to cut a heel promo on the same show but he also wanted to pray for owen. So Jarrett ended up praying for Owen in the promo then not even 5 seconds later, cut a promo on Debra's(his manager) breasts. I didn't watch it live but I could imagine it was really uncomfortable

2024-09-04 18:10:38 +0000 UTCSorry for the bummer! I recommended this because as new wrestling fans this is probably the second biggest wrestling story in modern history behind the Benoit tragedy and I think this documentary with the family is the definitive retelling. Great reaction as always. RIP Owen

2024-09-04 18:06:04 +0000 UTC“As bad as Vince is, I believe there’s gotta be some bit of humanity in him” nah At a press conference when Vince was asked by the media why there wasn’t a safety line included in the harness for Owen he responded “im not an expert on rigging, I guess you are.” When asked again he started with “well first of all, I resent your tone… I resent your tone lady.” When Eddie Guerrero tragically died in his hotel room Vince instructed Randy Orton to cut a promo saying Eddie is in hell. When Jimmy Snuka murdered his girlfriend in 1983 Vince helped him cover it up because Snuka was a star and a big draw. The Behind the Bastards podcast did a series on Vince McMahon that needed SIX episodes to go into his evil and exploitative deeds.
