Midnight Express vs Rock N Roll Express - September 7th, 1986

Comments

A couple of things I’m surprised nobody has mentioned: The lead announcer here is Tony Schiavone. He was the announcer during the WCW boom of the 90s and he’s an announcer for AEW now at age 66. He also has a good podcast with Conrad Thompson. With regard to the video quality (I think it was fine), WWE actually has a lot of these 80s NWA episodes on Peacock with pristine video quality. The issue though is that many wrestlers in the 80s used real songs as entrance music so they always get dubbed over. I prefer the worse video with everything else intact.

He also said he had his “britches”. lol.

Love this era 🥰

Jennifer Lindgren

Yeah. I don't agree with all of them especially when it comes to the supernatural stuff but I do agree with a decent amount of his opinions. It's also stupid to question his knowledge. The man knows the entire history of Pro Wrestling from the days of Joe Stecher in the 1910s all the way to the modern day stuff with the bloodline. You're not going to win a knowledge contest against Cornette. He literally knows everything.

Chad

Lmao. Give him Backlund too.

Chad

So I hear lol

Dport

He has strong opinions. I don't necessarily agree with all of them, but no one can question his knowledge of wrestling history, especially since he was there for a whole lot of it.

Adam Nelson

Lol lets make him go even more years back🤣 someone should give him a bruno sammartino match lol

Jim Cornette is a podcast personality nowadays talking about what he likes about modern day wrestling and what not. He is really really funny and really really entertaining as well. He's so freaking hysterical. If you ever get the chance you should totally check his podcast out.

Chad

I love Jim Cornette. I listen to his podcast every week.

Chad

The manager of the midnight , Jim Cornette is currently the most influential wrestling podcaster/commentator.

what was happening around 10:00 in was that the ref wasnt counting due to him pulling his tights for leverage, which is an illegal manoeuvre although this is rarely enforced nowadays. thats what dusty meant when he said he had a "hold on his slacks"

There's a lot of questions you want answered so let's start with where they are. World Championship Wrestling was filmed at WTBS Studios in Atlanta Georgia. This was the era when the wrestling business was kept in kayfabe and they did not want to let fans in on it. A lot of territories ran their own buildings like the Sportatorium in Dallas for World Class or the Irish McNeil Boys Club for Mid South in Shreveport, Louisiana. Or they ran weekly out of TV studios like the one you saw thats why there's not a lot of people in there. Now onto Jim Cornettes gimmick in the business. Cornettes gimmick was hes a rich mamas boy who gives him everything he could want or need. He uses her money to pay a fine that was given to him due to some action or to strike a deal. You've really watch him cut some promos I can't explain them you've just gotta see them for yourself his wit is incredible. His tennis racket like you saw is used as a weapon to get heat behind the referees back. In the case of real life riots back in the day, and yes this did happen back when the fans believed there's many many cases of riots happening at wrestling events, its been used as a real weapon. The one thing that makes guys like Bobby Eaton, Ricky Morton and Robert Gibson so unique is their phyiscality, selling and registering. Not just selling a punch or a kick but registering that punch or kick is lost on a lot of people (Ex: How Bobby Eaton holds his mouth and moves after a punch/Robert Gibson when hes selling and reaching out for the ropes hes screwing up his face almost mouthing help me to the front row really registering the pain hes in) Bobby Eaton is known to be one of the smoothest workers a lot of people have said when they were working with Bobby it was like taking a night off. Hes just so clean with everything and precise you'd think the most severe move was hurting someone and in reality that opponent never felt a thing. The Revival now FTR in AEW have really championed The Midnight Express and just the entirety of territory wrestling as shaping them as wrestlers. Watching what the business was before modern wrestling, seeing how this was done back when it was getting started, learning how the amazing workers of days gone by were able to stay in the business, etc. This is probably a lot to read but I hope Ive answered any question you had. If you want to hear FTR talk about the Midnight Express and how they implement territory wrestling into modern wrestling now check out when they went on Jim Cornettes podcast and talked to him its from right when they signed with AEW.

Good to know

Just a small thing - tap outs only became a thing in wrestling in the late 90s, introduced by (former UFC champion) Ken Shamrock when he joined the WWF. Before that it was a verbal giving up, or else they’d do the arm lifting thing to check if you were conscious. If your arm fell three times, the match was over. Anyway: if you watch old matches and see people tapping on the mat or their opponent and the match isn’t over, that’s why
