Wow. This was before he even got his iconic theme music! Classic promo. I think everyone here will love this reenactment of the speech by Kofi Kingston and the New Day. https://youtu.be/ZcNm48Mw_BQ?si=1wCQ2KPqlc32Hf3Q

2024-08-31 06:34:47 +0000 UTCJust a side note.. the interviewer. that is one wrestling icon, Michael P.S. Hayes of the Fabolous Freebirds... I have met Michael Hayes, aka Dok Hendrix, at a bowling alley here in Pensacola, Fl. I was around 18. Also, had a conversation at a Tastee Freeze with Ricky Morton as a teen, too. Pensacola always had wrasslers stop by for a quick visit.

2024-07-22 07:04:40 +0000 UTCThis was the promo that turned Stone Cold into a major star. It is the promo that invented two of his major catchphrases in a twenty second span with "Austin 3:16" and "That's the bottom line cause Stone Cold said so." That's the first time he said both of those catchphrases.

2024-07-22 00:38:50 +0000 UTCThat guy that Austin was trash talking was Jake "The Snake" Roberts who was a christian so that was Austin really talking trash to him.

2024-07-22 00:37:00 +0000 UTCDo you see where the comparison comes from with LA Knight? He has the exact same cadence as Stone Cold but with The Rock's voice.

2024-07-20 21:42:50 +0000 UTCStone Cold has said in interviews about this promo that it was pretty much entirely made up on the spot, since he was at the hospital getting stitched up for most of the show (between his two matches). Michael Hayes (the interviewer here) gave him a summary of Jake Roberts's promo when he got back from the hospital on the way to his second match, and "Austin 3:16" popped into his head then. He also said that between that and "That's the bottom line, because Stone Cold said so" it's like he walked up in a game he wasn't supposed to be in and hit two grand slams in two at-bats.

2024-07-20 21:32:55 +0000 UTCOriginally, the King of the Ring was planned to set up the title match at SummerSlam, much the same way the Royal Rumble does for WrestleMania. However that was derailed the very first year, as Hulk Hogan politicked his way out of facing the 1993 KotR (Bret Hart). However in 1994 and 1995, both Kings ended facing the WW[E] champion at SummerSlam, but the stipulation was dropped in 1996 (without it ever being an official stipulation). Then in 2002, the SummerSlam title match stipulation was officially declared for the King of the Ring, but then the PPV was discontinued after that.

2024-07-20 20:31:12 +0000 UTCAustin had just got back from the hospital before going out to do the last match and asked Michael Hayes what Jake had said earlier and he said he just cut a religious promo. Back then there was almost no script for what the wrestlers actually said so all of that was Austin completely off the cuff with only Jake cut a religious promo on him as a basis to work off of and he came up with Austin 3:16 and thats the bottom line because Stone Cold said so two of the greatest catchphrases of all time in one night.

2024-07-20 16:26:49 +0000 UTCInterestingly enough, Triple H was supposed to win this King of the Ring but a house show incident called The Curtain Call brought those plans to a complete halt. Triple H, Shawn Michaels, Kevin Nash and Scott Hall all broke character at an MSG house show and hugged in the ring at the end of a show since Nash and Hall were leaving to WCW. This was a mix of faces and heels being friends in a ring and was incredibly shocking to fans during a period where the business wasn’t as exposed as it is now. Nash and Hall would famously form the NWO after arriving in WCW, leading to WCW having higher ratings than WWE for 83 straight weeks. Triple H, being the least popular of the 4 by far, was punished for the incident happening, no longer would be planned to win KOTR and would have to scratch and claw his way back up the card. He references this in an iconic sit-down interview/promo with Jim Ross: https://youtu.be/JhcZznZFsqg?si=Exkbx0BUXDJbKo_z

2024-07-20 16:26:02 +0000 UTCHe beat Jake “the Snake” Roberts there in the final. From what I understand that was all ad-lib off the cuff pretty much. So he came up with the greatest selling wresting T-shirt ever and the bottom line catchphrase in 1 promo. It’s so iconic. A little more context too, Triple H was originally supposed to win this but was punished for the infamous Curtain Call incident at a house show close to this event. Kevin Nash and Scott Hall were leaving to go to WCW (Hall, Nash, HBK & HHH being part of a backstage group called the Kilq) so HHH & HBK hugged them in the ring to close the house show, breaking kayfabe and Vince was not happy, taking the KOTR from HHH. So they decided to switch the KOTR to Austin instead. In another universe somewhere Hunter 3:16 is whooping everyone’s ass! 🤣

2024-07-20 16:18:06 +0000 UTCIt was Jake The Snake Roberts. Who is a recovering addict and this was near the time he became a Christian. Jake is someone who was really good at promos especially at the time. I would suggest checking some of his stuff it’s pretty good.

2024-07-20 16:16:40 +0000 UTCThe King Of The Ring meant something back then, cause they actually did the entire tournament in one night, Austin went to the hospital after his first match and came back to do this match. I believe thats how it went.

2024-07-20 16:16:37 +0000 UTC1. You got it right, it wasn’t for title shot it was just for the prestige. I actually think the only other year they made it officially for a title shot was in 2002 when Brock won. 2. His opponent in the finals was a past his prime Jake “the snake” Roberts. He had bad drug issues in the past. In 1996 in his real life he had found god, became sober and was incorporating that into his gimmick at this time. Unfortunately this didn’t last very long and he’d have a long battle with substance abuse. He did eventually clean himself up but it took about another 20 years.
