Patreon Exclusive: Re-Introducing the Smarter Scrubber

Howdy again! About a month and a half ago I made a post visible only to contributing Patrons. At that time we didn't have enough built to tell everyone. We've since figured out how to increase production, so we've made more Smarter Scrubbers! We hope to have enough for everyone who wants to buy one in the near-term, but we're not quite ready to blast it out to the whole internet. I thought it would be fun to repost this for everyone who follows on Patreon.  We've shipped a ton of scrubbers out and people seem to really be enjoying them! If you got one I'd love to hear what you think! If you don't know what we're talking about check out the link below! Thanks again for everyone who supports Smarter Every Day, I'm grateful!

Here's the link! https://www.patreon.com/posts/patron-exclusive-116911871

Also... some of you have asked if there was a way to share this video with friends and family that you gave a Smarter Scrubber to. I've uploaded an unlisted YouTube link for that., but we're not ready to go FULL ON with this, so please don't put this video out on the wide-open internet at this point. That being said, here's the link! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DkGRE2CFpw8

Thank you!

Patreon Exclusive: Re-Introducing the Smarter Scrubber

Comments

Just got mine. Thanks Destin!

Tony Wong

ok. just got the latest email and placed an order. look forward to receiving it. I literally was about to order a competing product from amazon so this is truly great timing!

EricSt11

Got mine....

Mark Wood

I was going to give u a picture but can't upload the thank note that came with my scrubber Justin on my purchase. I think you misspelled you name however? But your welcome, yes I like the smarter scrubber. I'll get a grill someday and try it out. Justin or Destin or whatever you are.

WillieChaffin

That sounds awesome, I am going to have to look that one up.

Ryan Hopman

Yours is the fifth or sixth reply I have seen that refers to some mystical "grilling season." Not trying to throw shade or anything, but I live in Minnesota and I grill all winter long. Winter is also the perfect time for cold smoking. Don't deny yourself deliciousness just because it is cold outside! Throw a few more coals on the fire and keep grilling!

Eric Lund

There is a book (speaking of old tech) called "On Divers Arts: The Foremost Medieval Treatise on Painting, Glassmaking and Metalworking" that you might enjoy if you haven't seen it. It is, essentially, a translation of the shop notes of a medieval "maker" known only as Theophilus Presbyter, believed to have lived around 1100 CE. It distills the essence of a huge number of practical projects ranging from making and hardening files to building a church organ. Definitely worth owning if you are interested in medieval technology and methods.

Eric Lund

I bought 3 of them for me and my kids (not really kids anymore but kids anyway). We all love them. I recently used mine to clean the flaky carbon build up out of the top of my webber. The round scrubber is perfect for that. I had never found a good way to do that before. It's like having a new grill again! Also, it is super nice to be able to just toss the scrubber in the dishwasher when it gets dirty and greasy. I did notice burrs from the stamping process on mine. I am not sure if it would be practical to add a deburring step to the manufacturing process or not. That could improve the perceived quality a bit. Still, overall this is an excellent product!

Eric Lund

Bought this for my friend who grills the most, and has cast iron cookware. He absolutely loves this thing. I'll buy a couple more for those who don't grill as much when the season comes. Can't wait for the more detailed manufacturing videos to come out. Congrats Destin

Doorbell rang a few hours ago and it's here!! It'll make me smile when I use it.

Robert Parker

Also - the grip part of the handle - on the bottom, the curve of the metal creates a funnel-shaped gap. It's really easy to get a nasty pinch or cut by sliding your hand along the bottom of the handle away from the scrubber, especially if you haven't sanded the sharp-ish edges down. The funnel does a great job of guiding some skin into the pinch point.

Greg U

Likewise - got one as an Xmas gift after hinting strongly. :D The edges of the metal were a bit sharp. 15 mins with some sandpaper smoothed it out, but it woulda been nicer not to have to do that.

Greg U

(Received mine just now!) Barely touched my grill last year... but now that I have a new scrubber, I sense that's about to change! Happy to support, and even if I'm more likely to use the scrub head on my cast iron pans than the grill, it's a nice piece of gear!

Jonathan Murray

I checked... the domestic supplier is in Massachusetts. Another M state with a lot of S's in it!

Smarter Every Day

I got my scrubber and I love it. I especially like being able to take off the head and use it hand held. One design feedback I'd like to share. When you unscrew the head and try to screw it back on, the bolt slides down making it difficult to screw the knob back on. It would be great if there was some kind of washer that holds the screw in place while trying to get the threads of the knob to lock in.

Howard

When will it be available to people outside the US?

Itamar Hassan

I was wrong about Mississippi. We bought a batch from K&D Fasteners and they were certified domestic supplier.

Smarter Every Day

I talked about it when we saw the Patreon announcment and my wife surprised me with one for Christmas. We have since had snowcover and single digit temps often so I haven't gotten to use it outside for the grill, but we use cast iron and I was excited about the detachable function. I would second that there seem to be some sharp edges that don't present a problem for me, but I could see how that could be a downside for some.

Justin Raffauf

I haven't used mine yet, but thanks for the heads up, I got one of the early production run ones as well, and one for a friend.

Dustin

I have one of the earlier ones and it’s great quality product that works as intended. My only minor feedback would be the handle. The seam has some sharp edges which make it a little uncomfortable to grip without gloves. So far I haven’t had any real problems with it but it would be great if it was rolled in a bit so the burr of the metal isn’t against my skin when I’m gripping it. Not a real dealbreaker but if you’re looking for any real feedback there it is!

Neeloy

My wife does some chain mail, I had her make me a cast iron scrubber out of brass. It worked really well. I didn't necessarily want something as hard or harder than the pan. There are also different chain mail weaves that can be done, some of which look really cool and have different stiffnesses to them or different directions that they hinge. I assume you have been to a ren fair. They are a lot of fun. There is a lot of modern aspects that creep in but sometimes I am amazed at the engineering and ingenuity that went on centuries ago. In fact I am in a lot of ways trying to understand 500 or 1000 year old tech. Which makes working as an engineer on the cutting edge of science seem absurd, but somehow they don't fire me and I keep paying bills. I guess I just have to stay a little smarter than the managers and clients in some obscure area.

Ryan Hopman

Expensive but we all know how much thought you put into this and we know it will last. I hate the crappy scrubbers on the market, so even though this is kind of random to be so excited about, it’s a problem that needed to be solved. I wouldn’t expect anything less from you. Great job and thank you!

Kevin G

I ordered my scrubber. Excited. The Mississippi bolt was the sealer. GO USA MANUFACTURING! I’m all for bring back our industrial past and making things again like steel.

WillieChaffin

I bought one for these and one for my dad! We're very happy with them! Thank you for helping keep manufacturing alive in the USA!

Guyon Cumby

It’s amazing!!!!

Jeremiah Cawthon

Wetting it first makes a lot of sense

Smarter Every Day

I need to talk to John about that

Smarter Every Day

This is awesome. So you plan to sell just the head separately for cleaning cast iron? Maybe make it just a little smaller for that purpose.

Mary Wolfe

Any plans on international shipping?

Frans Wilbrink

I got one in the last round! Dipped it in a bowl of water before scrubbing the hot grill and the steam plus the scrubber cleaned everything beautifully! It's also a lot easier to clean up after use than the wire or bristle kind, which I like a lot. Thanks for a great product, and thanks for making it in the U.S.A.!

Martin J.

I think it's really cool. I grill only very rarely, but for something that will last a long time and won't kill me or stab my fingers when I blindly reach into a drawer, it's well worth it.

Honey Bunches of Oats

Man, I’m so glad I got these… Two of them made it all the way here to me in Okinawa! The other three I sent to both my brothers and cousin! They made great Christmas gifts! Thank you for making this sort of stuff happened Destin!

Daniel

Ordered one right now. :) Thanks Dustin. You are 1000% correct. US Manufacturing is SO important. Good for you!

bill miller

What about shipping to Canada?

Farid Aziz

My wife got me one for Christmas, and I have used it once. I do like it. It works different than other scrubbers and it takes a little getting used to. The brushes do a better job getting between the grates, but I was able to use the scrubber to clean it well enough. My one real nitpick is about where the metal was stamped from the sheet. The edges feel a little sharp, though I know it won’t cut me. It’s almost a non-issue since those edges are more or less rolled together. It’s more of an ocd tactile annoyance, than an actual critique. When we thaw out down here in Florida, I might have to fire up the grill again just to use the scrubber. Also: recently Instagram shows me a short related to someone getting an infection from a grill brush bristle. So, I’m definitely glad to move past that danger that I was ignorant about before your video about the scrubber.

Joe Schneider

You all should get one! This thing is very sturdy!

John Nixon

I bought myself one for Christmas and have been able to use it a couple times on the grill. I really appreciate the grate cleaning cutouts because it makes cleaning super precise! I also took the end off and used it to clean a cast iron skillet too. Destin, you rock!

Josh Himler

I got one for myself after getting a smoker/grill for Christmas and the grill tools came with the metal bristle brush. Nothing beats health and safety, especially when it supports American manufacturing and smarter every day! Thanks Destin!

Daniel Desio

I got my dad one for Christmas to replace our half melted plastic and metal bristle brush. Our grill has never been cleaner!

Matthew Doornink

I bought one right away even though it is totally NOT grilling season here in Michigan. I look forward to using it in the season

Spencer Thomas

I actually lost the card with the fellas email on it where I was supposed to give comments so I never got to respond. I’m glad to hear it’s still a thing you’re building. My FIL will likely enjoy one for Father’s Day

Zachary Parrish

I got my Scrubber! 💪

Jay Mweller

I love that you're developing product's! Lots of learnings come along the line of bringing a physical inventions to the masses. Brilliant stuff Destin!

Reef

I use mine primarily for cleaning cast iron pans and the griddle plate on my gas stove. It excels at that.

Payperheirplain

Thanks for reposting this! I intended to buy one when you posted this the first time, but it slipped my mind. Got one on order now!

Andrew Howell

Mine works well in the sink without the handle on our cast iron double griddle.

David Clark

I got one and I can say it is a good grill brush, but not the best I've used. I find the Scrub Daddy works better to get between grates where the smarter scrubber is better at knocking down the big chunks of stuff. Where this does excel is as a case iron pan scrubber. It's so nice to be able to take it off the handle and use it in the kitchen. For that alone it's worth the price. I think you nailed the design though. In order to match the scrub daddy on between grates cleaning you'd have to give up too much so don't take this as a negative review. I don't think there is a perfect one size fits all design.

Payperheirplain

We love ours! The detachable head is so convenient!

matthew s arnold

I got one for my son and one for myself. We both love them. They work so well.

Kevin Thomas

I have a large "farmhouse sink" so no problems there. It fits in my hand quite well. The tightening knob is slightly high when really pushing but no big deal.

Don Rude

That makes me SO HAPPY to hear!

Smarter Every Day

Does it work well in your sink? My goal was to make it work well in the hands.

Smarter Every Day

Awesome! We have enough supplies now, so we should be able to get you one if you order!

Smarter Every Day

I bought 2 one for me and the other was a Christmas present for my dad. I love mine dad hasn't used his yet but I know he will like it. They are well made. I am proud to support this made in America product!

Nashguy207

I received mine and put it to good use. I even mentioned where I got it from and that I need another one asap! https://youtu.be/ogwmUsvjJcE?si=6A812c13hFQFlBnq

Dash

I live in the UK, and it’s cold and wet up north. I need another purpose for buying one of these as I don’t have what’s needed for its intended use. Can anyone make some suggestions? A tool with more than one use has twice as many customers!

Simon York

I got one for myself and one for my dad. I love having the detachable scrubber for my cast iron pan.

Don Rude

I’ve been using one since you shipped out the prototypes like what, a year ago? They’re great!

Zachary Parrish

That's awesome!

Smarter Every Day

I got one for my dad for Christmas and he loved it!
