The Backwards Brain Tractor - Smarter Every Day 305

Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lylCYkgC63Q

This silly thing happened while I was replacing a hydraulic cylinder on my tractor. It reminded me of some fun concepts things and made me want to revisit the backwards brain bike. I filmed this on my phone and was a bit worried about it not being "good enough" for a video.... but I ultimately decided that you might like to think about this as well. Thank you to everyone who supports here on Patreon! You make me feel ok about uploading little things like this that I fee are intellectually honest and not "over produced". I'm excited to send out this year's stickers! The Cicada sticker is more fun than it should be. I'm excited to see what you end up doing with yours! If you have a friend that you think would enjoy being on the sticker team please let them know that I'm about to lock in the list at the end of the month!

The next video is going to start a new series here on Smarter Every Day that I think you'll enjoy!

I vote on that. I too have cool stuff to share.

Samuel Svendsen

Thank you sharing that link. The pay wall made me look for alternatives and i found a post from NBC non Youtube from sep 24. Very interesting what they say about the state of mathmatics at the time van Gogh's painted these accurate to today's math.

Mike Zitter

I got the previous sticker with a reach-out. He probably uses the Patreon member info.

Mike Zitter

On the bike you are balancing and pedaling and moving the bars. When you ride with it correctly you mostly lean and do not use the handle bars very much. On the tractor you are not doing as much so it seems that it makes sense that it would be so easy to pick up. I actually would be interested to see if others who can’t ride the bike CAN drive the tractor. I don’t think it was your bike training that made the tractor easier.

Danny Haws

I’ve been wondering Destin, if you would consider enabling “chats” on your Patreon. That way we would all have a place to share cool things like this photograph of the laminar flow of water moving across the face of Honey Osrin, taken by Ian MacNicol on March 1st. 2018 in Edinburgh, Scotland: https://www.ianmacnicol.com/wp-content/gallery/aquatics/aquatics-02.jpg

Bo Holbo Rasmussen

Wait! You had it in reverse and didn't try to drive it backwards?!!! Driving backwards is a brainswitch already. Driving backwards on a backwards-steering tractor would be a double brainswitch. Would that cancel out? I gotta think about this ... looking over your shoulder, normally you steer right to go right. (the front of the vehicle goes left, which points the back to the right.) With backwards-steering, you would steer left to go right, meaning the front of the vehicle would move the same way you steer, and the back end would go the other way. I dare you to try backing a trailer with it.

I was gifted a membership for Christmas! Hope I didn’t miss the cut off date for sticker team! Do I update my address somewhere, or does Destin reach out for that info?

Jonathan Outlaw

I'll reach out!

Smarter Every Day

We just send it in an envelope. Sorry about that with the baseball!

Hi Destin! I love being one of your Patrons and everything you post fuels my curiosity. I am sharing an article I saw in the Washington Post this morning. I don't know if you'll be able to get past a pay wall, but you may be able to find it through a different source. It is about mathematical turbulence in Vincent van Gogh's "Starry Starry Night". (Sorry for using the comment section to share this, but I couldn't quickly find a way to DM you. 🫠) https://www.washingtonpost.com/science/interactive/2024/starry-night-vincent-van-gogh-painting-turbulence-physics-explained/ I wish you and your family a blessed Christmas and a peaceful and prosperous New Year!

Awesome. Was so excited to see a new video! Reminds me of a family story where my uncle put the rack and pinion together on the wrong side while rebuilding a car. He and his brothers had a good time driving it in the pasture! Reminds me to have him tell the story to my kids next time we get together

Your videos are always a highlight moment. Looking forward to the stickers. Have an enjoyable Christmas and New Year. From rainy England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

The stickers for this year look great; can't want to see them in person! :)

Joseph Luhn

Hi Matej! As another international viewer I understand where you're coming from! Unfortunately not all customs/treaties work the same. For instance I have to have mine forwarded from the USA, and as such, a "letter" with no monetary value would be a customs NIGHTMARE... meanwhile a "$5 sticker pack", while unfairly taxing me on a non-valued (monetarily) "promotion piece", makes it "expensive" but feasible... As the letter would take infinitely longer and end up costing more in time & paperwork than just having the equivalent of our VAT charged to me... Perhaps one day countries around the world could be more friendly to the realities of the 21st century! One can hope I guess!

Marcos

Hey Destin! Hope all's good with you & yours! Great video as always! I can't help but notice that I didn't get my "sticker team" pack last year... I have my baseball & my JWST ones but nothing about the "Exploration" ones... Wondering if I should be worried about this year's as well? Do I need to change my membership?

Marcos

Bump for visibility!

John Gietzen

When I got the Patreon baseball, I had to pay much money for representation in the customs process. I would prefer that the stickers would be sent as an ordinary personal letter in an envelope to go around the customs process. Would it be viable? Although I am not sure how the process works, so I don't know what exactly is the optional solution.

Matěȷ

I've had a challenging few days just recently and this is exactly what I needed to see to put a smile on my face :)

Chris Coulson

I hope you do a grill brush sticker next year!

ruralbob

Thanks for the stickers. The thought behind them is really what counts and means a lot. But…if I had a choice of stickers, it would be a Reepicheep the mouse sticker. 😎

Dean Flaming

So happy you keep creating fantastic content that makes us think and makes us want to keep learning about our world. Thanks Destin and family !

Derek Schmidt

I'm a patron since 2022.07 and I didn't get any stickers :( But I did get the baseball. I thought the stickers were for special patrons tier or something like that :/

Crey

That tractor is awesome. I’m excited for this years sticker. I joined your Patreon back in 2022 and love your content. I unfortunately did not receive any stickers last year. It’s crazy that 2024 is already coming to an end

David Spalding

This was the video that finally made me decide to subscribe to the Patreon. I'm just a guy from Brazil that really enjoys your content and decided to finally be part of this community! I can't wait to get the sticker!

Ian Gabriel

Yes it is on the system but I seem to be in two different tires now the cat flipper and the one above help it is the one above that I would like to be in please

sue capps

Start by finding the gears!

Smarter Every Day

Oh no really not looking forward to getting bug pictures in the mail... Hopefully no more bug stickers after this.

Andy K

I enjoy it as well. Just a genuine experience that I wanted to share.

Smarter Every Day

100%

Smarter Every Day

We need to fix that! Do you have your address in the Patreon system?

Smarter Every Day

Just go to a junk/scrapyard and see if they have old gears from gearboxes etc just laying around. I bet you’ll find something for dirt cheap

Matti Loimaranta

I've been trying to build my own backwards bicycle for a while but am having trouble finding gears with the right inner diameters to connect the two stems. Any advice on how to find or make these? (For a price a college student could afford?)

A story about motivated learning: Some 25 years ago I was walking on a glacier covered with snow, looking nice and smooth (Don't try this at home.) I fell hip-deep into a crevasse in the glacier. Could have easily fallen 50 feet and died. And with this motivation, I immediately became able to see the crevasses underneath the snow-cover.

Amir Notea

I have been a member for at least 3 years but I have not received any stickers

sue capps

Would we be able to order a sheet of several cicada stickers? It sounds fun and I would like more than an one and done for pranking

Zachary Read

Cant wait to get the sticker.. Have all of them so far, plus the baseball which is proudly displayed in the livingroom on our piano. Just got my grill scrubber too and can't wait for a nice warm day to try the grill out with it. Proud to support you - Your videos are always interesting, and you answer questions I never realized I even had!! Thanks for what you do!

Steve Jones

Now I want to go swap the steering on my tractor and have my wife try to drive it.

Brad Keener

Agreed with another comment. The tracker is likely easier since "failure" does not stop the process, i.e., falling off the bike. That continuous motion allows the brain to use trial and error to correct.

Thad Hoskins

I have a feeling the tractor was significantly easier to pick up because there isn't a balancing component to it? Looking forward to the stickers! Thanks for all the great content!

Brandon P Bauer

I imagine it's a bit like hooking an implement hydraulic up "backwards". First couple cycles take some second guessing and by the end of the day it's near natural.

Arcy

I just saw the eclipse sticker in the email update and I think it turned out great!

Andrew Luchenbach

I love content like this. Short, authentic and sweet.

Sam

Destin, in moving a while back I lost my sticker of the JWST and was wondering are there any extra? Thank you. Also there is a video floating around of a PR drop vs hydraulics press... you would like it.

Edward Burton

You could film your videos with a potato and I'd still watch them. For me, it's about content not video quality (but I do love anything in 10 billion frames per second)
