Why I Boiled Water on the Summit of Kilimanjaro - Smarter Every Day 302

This was an amazing experience. If you haven't heard of the podcast I make with Matt, it's called "No Dumb Questions". I think you might like the "Songs of Ascent" episode.

Here's the open link to that episode on the website:

https://www.nodumbquestions.fm/listen/2024/8/22/187-songs-of-ascent

Here's the post to that on Patreon:

I took a few point and shoot film cameras. I've included 30 of my film photos for your viewing pleasure. You are free to use them for whatever personal use you'd like. Don't put them on the internet and don't distribute them please. I personally really like using number 24 as a desktop background for my computer.

I'm looking at the performance of the video right now and it's not doing that well. I'm comforted by knowing that you're helping me make intelligent, respectful content. I think this is the kind of thing that should be put on the internet. I'm so very grateful for your support! Enjoy the film photos!

Regards,

Destin

Are you planning to post on your Spotify podcast soon? It's still up.

Hey Destin, I know I'm late to the piece on this one but I wanted to add my appreciation for all the thoughtful, interesting content you're a part of creating. TBH, I was not particularly intrigued by this video when I first saw the title (and thus haven't watched it until now). But I also listen to the NDQ podcast (love your work there too, btw) and really loved the conversation between Matt and yourself in 'Songs of Ascent'. I'm actually really grateful that I listened to that podcast episode first, because I think it made me appreciate the process and the journey that you lay out in this video even more. Actually seeing the porters, seeing Shedrach, seeing the terrain you travelled, etc after having listened to you share about the experience really brought home the journey you went on. This episode is now a firm favourite of mine. Thanks for the way you model exploring the world around us with childlike curiosity and wonder, 'cause there are amazing things to see and explore and understand if only we'd take the time to go 'pole pole' and see them.

After I posted I did my research , wrong way round 😊 This search "effect on hygiene boiling water at high altitude" gave some educational answers. As I'm an Aussie the results may differ but the Govt guidelines didn't seem to differ between the US and Oz, as you'd hope.

Steve Prowse

Interesting question. Disclaimer: I don't have the answer but a wild guess,.I'm a science tragic not actually qualified in microbiology etc, Bacteria usually die before the boiling point so my guess is that wouldn't change. I understand the process interrupts cell integrity and leads to cell death. I'm going to see if the cell membrane is punctured is anywhere close to the reality later. I believe that your question is about killing some of the really nasty stuff out there, typhus etc, so I believe the recommendation would be to boil it longer or more sensibly use commercial water cleaning gear,

Steve Prowse

If you’re cooking food with water and trying to kill bacteria, how does the changing boiling point affect that?

Hey Destin, I have wanted to be a patron for a long time. You and your content has inspired me and changed my life for the better. You have a way of sparking my interest and some of my joy from the last years is learning from what you teach. I loved this video and I’m stoked to show you support

Hey Destin, thankyou for the Mt Kilimanjaro video, climbing it was something that I wanted to do in retirement but I have developed ME CFS and have lost the strength in my legs so this now wont be possible. Your video has enabled me to see what it woul d have been like. Those porters are amazing, I wonder how many times a week they make it up the mountain? I haven't been a Patron for very long but have started watching from video 1! I have a bit of a way to go to catch up....I am really enjoying them, keep it up! Let's be Smarter Every Day!

My wife and I usually watch one episode of some show in the evening. A few weeks ago I decided to switch things up and review episodes of Smarter Every Day that we hadn't watched (together) yet. We particularly enjoyed the one about cicadas! Having experienced cicada spring here in NC, it was mesmerizing to get a closer look at just how those bugs make all that noise. Both of us appreciate the effort you put into your videos. It's accurate to say that we both learn things from each video you've put out. My wife made the comment during the Roboforming video that you had a gift for explaining complicated engineering processes in a manner that anyone can understand (and you make them interesting!). Though I haven't been a Pateron for all that long, I've been watching your videos for years. It was your first eclipse video that prompted us to scrounge for a hotel in SC for the 2017 eclipse. That experience, coupled with your other videos cemented our plans to travel to Arkansas for this spring's eclipse. While we were there in the tiny town of Mena, we ran into a NASA engineer at the train station! He was there to give a talk at the local community college and is one of the nicest and most genuine people I've ever met. Anyway, thanks for making thoughtful stuff that means things to people. I've enjoyed the first 300 videos, and look forward to the next 300! ...also, in the series of videos about the submarine you teased that you might make a video about the aurora borealis. Is that still in the works?

Our family loved the video. THEN I listened to the No Dumb Podcast episode on my own. And cried. The spiritual analogies were rich and plentiful. When Matt got to "it's a Song of Ascent", I nearly bawled. Thank you for making content like this and for making viewers aware of the podcast where they could hear the entire Porters' Song. I grinned along that entire stretch of freeway listening to that.

Destin, I loved everything about this video. It really reminded me of β€œold” YouTube, where people could just make videos about things they found interesting. And I LOVE that you included those pictures in the video. Still so thankful for you rekindling my love for analog photography.

Niels Kersic

Thanks, Destin, for the great pictures!

Does water freeze at different altitudes?

Moe

Love the photos! I've been looking for a new desktop wallpaper and these are perfect.

Tyson Lidback

Thank you for sharing your photos! I love them, and seeing them reminded me of your tale about the climb and the people you climbed with.

Gene & Linnea

Does the lower pressure/oxygen content affect the photographic film at all?

Maarten Daalder

I followed your advice to be thoughtful of the next piece of content I consume after this: I'm going to bed instead of continuing the binge.

Cortez

Our family has been looking forward to this video showing up since my husband and I listened to your story on No Dumb Questions. Congratulations to you and your wife on such a hard earned achievement. Once in a lifetime, for sure!

Clarissa Smith

This is one of my favorites of your videos. Great content. Beautiful videography and photography. Wonderful human interaction and of course the great science and detail. Just great.

Dave Hail

Why are you like this.

Smarter Every Day

So, how far is it to the horizon at the summit -- how far can you see?

James A. Thornton

You are not alone sir. It affects me the same.

David Williford

Love the film photos. My favorites are 10, 11, and 12

my friend is climbing it RIGHT NOW so this was really cool to get a close up look at what she's doing!
