Patreon Update - Sticker Ideas?
Added 2024-09-26 18:24:58 +0000 UTCHey there! Thank you so much for supporting Smarter Every Day on Patreon. I'm grateful.
I wanted to let everyone know about a change with Patreon that will help simplify billing for everyone currently supporting Smarter Every Day.
Patreon is switching from “per creation” to “monthly” billing effective November 1st.
This means that every month you will have consistency, and support won’t ever fluctuate based on how many videos I upload that month. I've been thinking about what this means for me, and I think on one side it removes a bit of a pressure-cooker feeling for me... but on the other side of the coin, I might be more likely to upload some simpler videos because I won't feel like everything has to be as big of a production. Just some stuff I've been thinking about.
STICKERS! Do you have any ideas on what this year's sticker team should be? Every year we come up with a "Team" and I send out stickers to everyone who supports on Patreon. I'd love to see photos of where your Smarter Every Day stickers have landed! I'd also enjoy some doodles or drafts of your ideas for this year's team sticker!!
Write your ideas for this year's sticker in the comments or email doodles/drafts etc. to: patrons@smartereveryday.com
Email me or publicly post where your past stickers ended up here: https://twitter.com/smartereveryday/status/1839369134272106651

How about a Smarter Scrubber-shaped sticker? I love mine!
Brian Steely
2025-09-09 19:23:05 +0000 UTCNew Subsciber but I work at a copper mine and would love to put the sticker on my hard hat. I've found smaller round stickers or rectangular/triangle shapes to fit best.

2025-08-15 02:32:26 +0000 UTCAre the stickers and baseballs shipped worldwide? Im from Germany and did not receive anything yet 😅

2025-05-24 21:26:51 +0000 UTCSomeone answer these two questions, I'm new, so I don't know the answers, really. How often do stickers come out? And when do the branded baseballs come?

2025-05-24 19:36:56 +0000 UTCNot yet..

2025-05-23 13:17:30 +0000 UTCI could design a sticker...

2025-05-19 18:40:10 +0000 UTCJust watched "We Don't Know Why". My 10¢ (used to be 2¢, but, you know, tariffs) is that it's black body radiation. I haven't been a practicing engineer for 35+ years, but I would be very interested in looking at a finite-element analysis that took the kinetic energy of a voxel of polycarbonate and converted that energy into heat. Back-of-Envelope: The Heat Capacity of polycarbonate is 1200 J/Kg*K (from a random google searched page) and we want a temperature of 2700 K (like you can find in a light bulb at the store), you would need an impact speed of ~2320 m/s of the polycarbonate slug to create that temperature in the leading edge of the slug. Can you go back to the high speed camera feed and get an estimate of the velocity of the polycarbonate slug?

2025-04-06 03:34:25 +0000 UTCGot my stickers in NC yesterday; they look so good in person! Now I just gotta figure out where to stick em...

2025-04-04 21:24:29 +0000 UTCThank you for the stickers Destin! Received them in the mail today. 😁
Ben Coulter
2025-04-03 21:43:22 +0000 UTCThe stickers arrived for me. Don't know how much variety there was in what was sent out, but I got a cicada, eclipse progression, and a rocket cicada sticker. All good stuff.

2025-03-10 23:46:01 +0000 UTCHere the same. Not received them 😢

2025-02-19 10:22:05 +0000 UTCI literally was logging onto patreon this evening to see if I was the only person to not get my stickers
Benjamin Wenzel
2025-02-19 00:43:32 +0000 UTCNot shipped yet!
Smarter Every Day
2025-02-18 23:19:25 +0000 UTCI checked and even the lowest tier says sticker included so probably not shipped.
Payperheirplain
2025-02-11 22:42:44 +0000 UTCI'm also at the low tier and have not received them yet, but have historically gotten the stickers every year. Hopefully they just haven't been shipped yet this year!
Andrew Luchenbach
2025-02-11 21:45:21 +0000 UTCDid you guys ever get stickers? I never did. If I misunderstood the "everyone who supports on Patreon" part maybe that's why. I believe I support at the lowest tier but to my knowledge of the definition of everyone that would include that tier.
Payperheirplain
2025-02-11 21:05:11 +0000 UTCHope i didn’t miss out on the sticker for 2024…. I’ve been a supporter for years but my payment for November and December was rejected…. It’s been fixed…hopefully I get the new stickers…. I will get over it if I don’t but I have loved every sticker to date.
Jim Theis
2025-01-26 04:20:37 +0000 UTCI got my letter for the stickers but no stickers 😢
Conner Alameda
2025-01-23 17:07:21 +0000 UTCI am on the Prince Rupert’s drop tier and am curious if I will ever get a reward. Not that I need to, as I genuinely love supporting your content but I am curious.

2025-01-08 04:09:32 +0000 UTCSame here (Czech Republic) .. i could accept gift from US with no customs fees if its sent as gift by private individual and they might want proof that its a gift. Otherwise we have to pay customs fee for everything from US. Baseball was around 20$ for me .. it was some general price i guess because they wanted delivery note of some sort or how much did I pay for item form us as it was sent by company. I had nothing so they calculated fees themselves.. somehow ..
Vojtech Sarik
2025-01-07 20:28:06 +0000 UTCSame issue here (from Spain), customs fees were pretty high for the baseball. I would also prefer something that fits in ordinary letters. The last shipment of stickers arrived via ordinary letter and was fine (i.e., no customs).
zirrus
2024-12-26 11:10:54 +0000 UTCThe new tractor video has an update on them.
Sean Kelly
2024-12-18 20:53:56 +0000 UTCI didn't pay costums for a stickers so that should be fine for you too!
Ricardo Köhler
2024-12-18 20:48:33 +0000 UTCWhen I got the Patreon baseball, I had to pay much money for representation in the customs process. I would prefer that the stickers would be sent as an ordinary personal letter in an envelope to go around the customs process. Would it be viable? Although I am not sure how the process works, so I don't know what exactly is the optional solution.
Matěȷ
2024-12-17 07:41:47 +0000 UTCJust updated my address, so I hope they haven’t been sent out yet.

2024-11-28 20:11:35 +0000 UTCSomething photography related. I know the Kodak smarter was over a year ago (it felt like it was just a few months ago). With the interview with Don and Matt I think you could have a really cool photography related sticker. But I know what ever ends up being the design I will be pleasantly surprised will a letter from the US reaches me in the UK and I’ll add it to my collection!

2024-10-30 21:56:01 +0000 UTCMaybe a sticker on the Kodak Series. That was a long series that was the highlight this year
Ashith Hegde
2024-10-29 20:01:51 +0000 UTCI know I’m late to the party and there are so many great options!!!! You could do a sticker for every episode in reality…you simply do such a good job at bringing complicated topics down to earth!!! I really think this year was kind of space heavy though…so it might be fitting to have it focused on that…you started the year with telling NASA how umm…up a crick without a paddle they are and then the spacesuit and the rocket and the eclipse … it would be the year of space! As I was checking out YouTube though just now I had forgotten Natures Motor… I mean that thing is freaking cool that it certainly deserves consideration…maybe a combo big/small??? Kind of a ying/yang thing… universe/nano-verse???
Jason Hagenow
2024-10-29 19:31:23 +0000 UTCI have two sticker thoughts. I love the idea of the cicada sticker, but I think the flagellar motor video was one of my favorites of the year.
Josh Monroe
2024-10-29 13:26:16 +0000 UTCAn eclipse theme for sure! <3
João Pedro Gomes
2024-10-29 11:17:43 +0000 UTCI would love to to see the eclipse across the coupala.

2024-10-29 02:39:41 +0000 UTCEclipse/ Space themed sticker would be great!
Jose Pappie Gonzalez
2024-10-29 01:32:51 +0000 UTCI’m not sure my input is needed, since the eclipse series seems to be highly requested, but as a huge fan of both film photography and eclipses, I finally joined your Patreon this year to get access to that incredible shot. I would love to see it as the sticker this year!

2024-10-29 00:01:11 +0000 UTCI'd like to put my name in the pool of votes for the Eclipse Team. <.<

Ryan Massey
2024-10-28 22:48:57 +0000 UTCJust think about that for a second. The privilege we have of seeing the curiosity around Nature and our support allowing Destin and team to produce all these amazing works and topics, from Kilimanjaro, to the epic closeup of an insect to interviews about the 'how I do my job' on a space station. It's a bounty of riches for us and I am very thankful and happy to support this work. Stickers are sooooo extra.

2024-10-28 02:00:27 +0000 UTCI agree, eclipse!!
Jamie S.
2024-10-28 00:18:51 +0000 UTCI shall join those suggesting the eclipse for a sticker. I had considered joining this Patreon for awhile, but that was the final nail that got me in.

2024-10-27 18:35:20 +0000 UTCAfter seeing this last video, I really would love something with the ISS cupola and part earth part space (perhaps with a slice of moon included?)

2024-10-19 21:40:18 +0000 UTCTY for making amazing content for people. I share your work with several prospects in my life. Well done, and It's a bummer you have to present legal information like that. BLAHHH

2024-09-30 20:16:37 +0000 UTCHow about making it about our temporary "second moon"? Or maybe something to do with or incorporate the aurora borealis because of our solar event where most of the country got to see them? Or just something to do with solar maximum in general. Just a couple ideas!
Nathan Foster
2024-09-30 16:39:35 +0000 UTCEclipse sticker sounds best to me. Maybe something about cicadas for a secondary sticker? I thought your slow-mo video of them was cool

2024-09-27 19:39:07 +0000 UTCHow about a manufacturing sticker to go with the series?! Being a manufacturing engineer myself, I'd love that!!

2024-09-27 19:19:10 +0000 UTCHey Destin, all good here on the billing change. You normally have a once a month schedule anyway, so it doesn't really change much. We're here to support you, not necessarily for stickers (even though they are cool).
Greg Strike
2024-09-27 15:44:43 +0000 UTCDon't really care about the stickers. Most of our subscriptions here are "per creation". This change is unfortunate. "Content" is already a flood, per-creation let us support less frequent but more interesting channels.

2024-09-27 14:23:07 +0000 UTCI REALLY like the idea of mini disks
jahr
2024-09-27 12:33:47 +0000 UTCThe eclispe combined with some Kodak views could be awesome for the stickers. And you could add the Moon streched by some industrial robot from the manufacturing videos. Thanks for the videos.
Mathieu Abrahami
2024-09-27 06:48:49 +0000 UTCFirst choice is eclipse for sure! If you make eclipse stickers I’m going to have to get an extra Patreon sub somehow so I can give a set to my dad. Second choice is RBM!
Brian Botterill
2024-09-27 06:46:27 +0000 UTCI also struggle to apply them, I have intended for 3 years to apply them to my water bottle, but first I was waiting to get a new one, then I forgot and needed to clean it, then I dropped it a bunch and dented it all over, and thought I will wait till my next one. I have followed that cycle 3 times... This year I swear it will be different, I will find a home for ever year's sticker lol!

2024-09-27 02:52:39 +0000 UTCOk, I tried again with a different prompt, trying to get Grok to put an engineering drawing of a flagella motore superimposed on top of a full solar eclipse. I don't think Grok knows what a flagella motor is. Maybe Copilot does. Anyway, it did produce something interesting you might want to consider for the base of an idea..... enjoy! :) https://x.com/i/grok/share/jJklpf4Fv3n85P3fe6jOnHswv

2024-09-27 02:47:55 +0000 UTCTeam Eclipse here. Rare occasion, and I imagine a good portion of supporters (myself included, and my first eclipse) had the chance to get to experience the event themselves. I know for me, my personal experience with the actual event would increase my connection to the sticker.
Kyle
2024-09-27 02:24:41 +0000 UTCCurious on what your budget is. Cost of goods shipped per unit/patreon. Should you ever consider parting ways for a year from your “sticking to your patrons” analogy. Maybe get the frisbee guys to make you a few hundred mini disc (like 2-4”). Or as mentioned in another comment, something with your iconic hat. Idk
Insidehardware
2024-09-27 01:13:47 +0000 UTCHonestly, I struggle to apply them. Don’t want to “waste” by applying in the wrong location. So they sit safe in my drawer along with my Apple products stickers. Anyone else? Maybe just me verbally processing my insecurities. Second, I think you have done multiple rounds of 3 stickers. So theoretically, if you have the artwork, they could all be different topics. You could host a poll. I think the flagella would be visually cool with holographic effect. But then I need to watch the video again so I can explain it to viewers. If I actually apply the sticker. Eclipse would take my vote story wise but struggling on the “turn it into a sticker” idea, graphically.

2024-09-26 23:38:02 +0000 UTCOoh, that's a good one... I was thinking about covering one of my water bottles with some exposed film, like a dedicated shoot never digitized.
Gryyphyn Crosthwait
2024-09-26 23:28:36 +0000 UTCYou could do a sticker in Kodak film format, three images side-by-side, with side perforation. The eclipse would be the middle picture. On the sides a cicada and the flagella motor perhaps?
David Sallge
2024-09-26 21:33:11 +0000 UTCI really like the flagella motor idea! You should make it holographic and rotate as you look at it from different angles. You could also do the same thing with the eclipse. Make the moon slowly move in front of the sun as you look at the sticker from different angles.

2024-09-26 19:22:19 +0000 UTCSame here. Most stickers become magnets. Trash Pandas baseball sits right behind my keyboard to remind me it is Trash Can, not Trash Can't.
jahr
2024-09-26 19:19:12 +0000 UTCMaybe something with rockets? Could be standalone or referencing 'to the moon' (because we'll support you to the moon and back 😁). Related to the lunar EVA suit, Artemis, and Vulcan videos. Could even throw in an eclipse one since the moon shows up there, too!
Andrew Luchenbach
2024-09-26 19:16:29 +0000 UTCI am personally glad for the one/month billing.. I always had a "what if" in my head that wondered what I'd be paying if you suddenly made 10 videos in a month and blew out my patreon budget!! :-) I think I speak for most dedicated fans that even if you skip a month, I'm happy to pay because I know you're doing things behind the scenes to make the next video even better!! I'll have to think about the sticker idea. My baseball is displayed proudly on our piano, and the stickers so far all go on my gun safe..
Steve Jones
2024-09-26 19:06:03 +0000 UTCI concur. The Eclipse was one of the highlights of my year, and I always loved cicadas

2024-09-26 19:03:38 +0000 UTCWhat about something graphical, like rotating the eclipse phases panoramic image around the center until you have a circular sticker? I also like cicadas as a timely idea.

2024-09-26 19:01:59 +0000 UTCI convert all of my stickers into fridge magnets. Some go on the fridge in the campervan and travel with me, others go on the whiteboards around the house. I've replied to one of the other comments but I like the idea of a NASA style Smarter Every Day "mission patch". Eclipse or space suits seem the obvious topic.
Dale
2024-09-26 19:01:23 +0000 UTCYes something like that or even just a simple SED-logo patch to sew on something! In Finland we have this pretty weird university tradition where everyone gets their own coveralls with an assigned color based on their studies (i.e. green for economics etc.) and then you cover them with a bunch of patches to portray what your interests are etc.

2024-09-26 18:50:26 +0000 UTCIt’s got to be a bullet striking a match, right? I’m no graphic designer, and even I can tell it might not be an easy sticker to make, but here’s why I’d love that: 1. It’s awesome. 2. One of the greatest parts of the channel is the fact that messing around in the garage with an old buddy is given just as much significance as a personal tour through a freakin’ rocket factory. Both need to be represented. 3. The point is “sticking with it”—and a present-day throwback to something you first tried thirteen years ago is a perfect reflection of that. 4. It’s awesome.

2024-09-26 18:48:09 +0000 UTCI came here to mention the eclipse for the sticker idea, but am happy that others beat me to it.

2024-09-26 18:46:27 +0000 UTCThank YOU, Destin! Love the suggestions of the eclipse. You only need a single frame to reference that amazing thing. Also, I saw a comment about adding slit in back to make peeling easy. I concur.

2024-09-26 18:44:59 +0000 UTCBut, Destin, we KNOW what it references, so a single frame might work.

2024-09-26 18:36:40 +0000 UTCTotally the eclipse multi-exposure picture drawn as a sticker! I would also love to see a SED patch being something I could purchase, I sent a DM about this if you’re interested in hearing more!

2024-09-26 18:36:13 +0000 UTCSticker idea: two options: 1. A SCUBA diver’s mask with the reflection of an astronaut in it, or 2. An astronaut mask with a SCUBA diver reflection.

2024-09-26 18:35:14 +0000 UTCI tried to sticker-ify it and the partial phases were too tiny… you couldn't see them. Even tried to make a slim pano. It was just too small and didn't translate well to the sticker medium unfortunately.

2024-09-26 18:34:56 +0000 UTCIt has to be the eclipse… right? The eclipse composition was epic.

2024-09-26 18:33:25 +0000 UTCYou should do a sticker that’s holographic and represents the clock on your map. It would be awesome if every sticker represents a different time.

2024-09-26 18:31:50 +0000 UTCSticker idea: The mouse icon at the end of each video or your SED brain logo with either your established year or a verse. Also make the sticker with a slit in the back for easy peeling.

2024-09-26 18:31:38 +0000 UTCMaybe the sticker could have something to do with the solar eclipse? Or a rocket?
