I Swam at NASA's NBL to Observe a Spacesuit Test - It was AMAZING - Smarter Every Day 296

Happy Easter Everyone! He is Risen! The opportunity to observe this government spacesuit test was incredible. I hope you enjoy the video. I decided that this one was special enough that it warranted a longer video. We get VERY detailed in this one and go into the science of how everything works. I hope you love it! This was an absolutely awesome experience.

Thank you so much for supporting on Patreon! It makes the decision to make a video like this a very easy one. I'm grateful for you!

What an awesome video!

Andy Connelly

Liked the tid-bit about the swimsuit spinners at the end. The pool at the military and community sports centre has one too. (we aren't allowed to use it for drying off combat uniforms for aquatic combatives class though, it apparently wears out the engine too quickly)

Brian

cute little figures instead of cgi. Love it!

Riancor

Super interesting, thank you! I'd really like to know the result of the test though! What difference did the higher suit pressure make? Was Jessica right with her guess at the end?

Sam

Also idk if there’s a separate thread to post this on but Destin you should check out this kid on yt with the channel name Daniel Fajkis, especially his rotary subwoofer

NirNir

Love the longer video

NirNir

Need to report something to Destin. How do I make contact?

Edward Burton

First time getting the stickers, super cool!

Grant Williams

This video is one for the ages, and amazingly it will only become more relevant into the future... Really inspiring for up and coming, as well as existing Engineers!

Irvin Owens Jr

Just got my stickers in the mail. I cannot say how much I LOVE the Kodak film canister 😭

Jonathan Boring

I got my stickers today. Love them. Thanks for this video. I am not an engineer but what an experience and so fun to see everything my tax dollars go to fund the space program.

Joseph Prespare

awesome! I guess I just needed a tad more patience! I'm excited I'll be able to add this sticker to my collection!

Jared Jobes

Stickers received in today's mail here in SC.

John Cox

I just heard from Mary Kate yesterday that, as of Friday (March 29), all of the stickers have been shipped for US patrons.

Jeff Steiner

Can't wait to watch this video! Side Question: does anyone know if stickers have been sent out for this year? I just don't know if mine got lost in the mail, but I'm looking forward to putting them on my laptop!

Jared Jobes

Not finished all of the video yet but I just want to thank you for these awesome longform videos, I love all of them! Keep doing what you're doing :)

Wouter

Brilliant Destin. A special video indeed!

John Cox

Such a great video, Destin! I really appreciate how you treat experts in your videos. You stay humble and show genuine excitement about their work, allowing them to share their passion. Thanks for being a great example and an inspiration for aspiring engineers like myself!

Jonas Wahlen

Well done, so interesting. Thank you.

Mark Sundstrom

Oh wow I've never thought of doing that! That totally would change the CG.

Smarter Every Day

Yes I was thinking about boats!

Smarter Every Day

Amazing job Destin and everyone at Smarter Everyday! So insightful and in depth. I hope that all your 'past tense' of your astronaut candidate applications doesn't mean you're done applying (I can't think of anyone who would be a more awesome astronaut), but I know you're at peace with God's plan either way, so whatever the future may hold, I'm sure I speak for everyone when I say that we are just so grateful to have you here doing this amazing work and giving us incredible insight into the world of science, engineering and just plain awesome stuff. You said it best when you say "this is not a normal video on the internet"...way better!

CaptainMojo

My instructor for my Human Factors Engineering course is the one that came up with the idea of practicing under water.

SnorkY2K

He is risen, indeed! Can’t wait to watch!

Kyle Mansfield

Now I see where those figures on that carpet board or whatever you call it come in. Neat

Ralph Woodard

He is risen, indeed!

Dave Chapman

Wow, amazing I am know smarter!!!!

Samuel Doak

Seeing how much care they take in making the CG and CB the same was really interesting. I would love to hear from someone who has experienced the "real thing" how accurate the feeling it really is. I would think that something as minor as moving your arms or legs in and out will have detectable differences in the CB, and probably CG as well. I wonder if it is impactful to their experience. I know as a pilot, I had a friend who was also a pilot slide his seat forward and back an inch or so at a time, and watch me struggle to figure out why I couldn't get a stable pitch trim.. It took me a good amount of time before I caught him making the adjustment after which we laughed about him messing with me. It was amazing how much an inch movement of a seat in a 1500# aircraft was able to make! I would think even moving an arm in or out could cause the same in this simulation.

Steve Jones

Wow, what an in depth video, this was so amazing to watch! I especially found the part about calculating the CB and CG of the astronauts interesting because we do a similar thing for boats (but want the CG lower than CB in order to maintain stability). Happy Easter!

Daniel Desio

A reminder that we are the first generations of humans to see images of the Whole Earth - a bright blue ball on which every person who ever lived, every person you care about and who cares about you, all live on that little blue ball set in the deepest darkness.

Happy Easter

Mrgunsngear

That place is pretty amazing. I did my BOSIT course there. They passed a mask around while we were waiting in line for training, and it was incredible watching them work. Pictures and videos of the ISS are one thing. Seeing the replica up close is something else.

Daryl Styrk

He is Risen indeed!

Jed Ralls

My kiddos and I have been Eagerly following along! This a great Easter surprise! Happy Easter to You Destin, and the whole Smarter Everyday Team!
