SUPERSONIC BASEBALL Cannon - (This is a big one)

Thank you very much for your support on Patreon.  I'm going to try to double-down on Patreon so I am not beholden to outside influences quite so much.

I have been wanting to build this thing as long as I understood the  physics of how it all works.  A super big thanks to David Linderman,  Jeremy Fielding, Trent, and David Woodall (the welder).  I realize most people who support Smarter Every Day don't do it for  "transactional" reasons, (ie, I'll support Smarter Every Day to get  stuff).  I also realized that there is often a mental hurdle that must  be crossed before support on Patreon starts.  My thought is that I'd  really like to give folks a baseball, and it might provide enough  momentum to get over that initial hurdle.  I signed the first shipment  of baseballs I received, but I only have so many of those.

IF YOU'VE BEEN A PATRON PLEASE PUT YOUR ADDRESS IN THE SYSTEM so I can send you a baseball.  It must be setup for Smarter Every Day to have visibility.  Here's a post explaining how to do that:

https://www.patreon.com/posts/39105276

There's no  implication that my signature is worth anything.... it's just kind of  what you do with baseballs... it's a tradition.  After a certain number,  it will transition to unsigned baseballs.  I've got enough signed  baseballs to over all existing Patrons, and many more, but I will wait a  month or so to see how many I need to get, then I'll order the second  batch.  I like to support jobs and pay people for what they're good at....the machinists and welders who made the parts in this video for example.   The whole intent here is to diversify away from solely being ad  sponsored so I don't have to answer to anyone but myself and Patrons  with respect to the types of content I choose to make.  Thank you for  understanding what I'm doing here, and even if you decide not to kick in  at https://www.patreon.com/smartereveryday , I'm super grateful you  took the time to watch this video!   Thank you very much,   Destin

Hi Destin. I've been following you for a while but just started supporting you via Patreon. As much as I like baseball, I'd rather you keep the baseball and save the money on product and shipping and put it to better use. Keep up the good work. Bring on more crackers ideas and creativity :) All the best Dan from the UK

Dan Leonard

Just finally watched this amazing video and updated my address! I hope there are some baseballs left! Love your work!!

Davey Rogulich

Hi Destin and Crew....I received my Baseball .....thx...keep up the good work...Greetings from Antwerp in Belgium......

Hi Destin.....just checking if a baseball will be coming to belgium one day.....keep up the good work...

Just got my surprise baseball (Melbourne Australia). Thanks so much Destin and keep on doing what you do. :)

I sent you my location on the Secret messages place but I haven’t gotten it yet. What do I do?

Asdfghjkl Qwertyuiop

So glad to support you and your mission. I signed up and look forward to your next endeavor.

Kia ora. Your fantastic baseball has arrived in New Zealand. Thanks Destin, you’re amazing!

Received the baseball Destin thank you so much. Love from India.

I got mine as well! Thanks Destin! :D

Jacob Elliot Cassagnol

Mine arrived today too! Had also totally forgotten about it so it was a great surprise!

Timmah

I checked the mail today and I was really concerned about a strange unexpected package. I totally forgot about the baseballs Destin was sending out to his supporters! I was so happy when I finally opened it. A very pleasant surprise! Thank you very much for this gift, Destin!

Just received my baseball here in Sydney Australia! Thanks a bunch Destin! Love your channel and always look forward to your videos. Cheers Mate👍👍

Aaron Cheeseman

Well a baseball made it all the way to little old New Zealand! Thanks so much Destin and the Trash Pandas! This Chanel and the content you make has been an absolute joy to watch and has filled me with inspiration for my own future, next year I’m off to university to study engineering and become smarter every day for myself. Thanks once again and I wish everyone all the best too.

Thanks for the baseball - love it! I spent a bit of time in the USA for work last year and watched a fair amount of MLB, fascinated by it now! Robert in Scotland

Thanks for the baseball! I was excited to see that I got a signed one! Thanks again for all you do.

I just got my ball signed too! Love from England Tom-16

Hats off, sir. You are truly infectious in your enthusiasm. My ten year old daughter is gaining an even deeper love and understanding of science and engineering through videos like this. It’s been many years since my physics degree and you’re putting me to absolute shame in communicating the power of sustained curiosity in everything in life. I hope she learns and remembers from your example. If baseballs are still going, yours will have pride of place on her bookshelves, if I can find some space!

Can you explain more about what we're seeing with the Schlieren imaging?

I totally didn't go fangirl mode when I saw that I got a signed one. Love everything you do, Destin! <3

Got mine today - it’s my very first baseball - it’s only taken me nearly 50 years to get one - thanks :)

Richard Cole

just got mine perfectly on time for my bday

I signed up to your patreon because of this video.

Wolf Harrold

Got mine today, thanks! It's perfect timing since mlb playoffs start today.

I got mine today too! I was maybe hoping for a signed snatch block too, but very happy with the ball!

I got mine today! Signed \

Got my baseball today. Thank you very much Destin!! Keep up the great content !!

yeah i am wondering that too

How long does it normally take for things to be mailed out after you join on Patreon?

Just got mine! Had a hard time deciding if I should put it with my science stuff or my baseball stuff. I feel like you'd appreciate it with the baseball stuff since thats where this journey began. Thanks Destin!

So psyched to receive my ball today, signed by one of my personal heros! Thanks Destin!

Got my baseball today! Super cool! I brought the mail in, thought "I wonder what my wife ordered? It's lumpy..." and when she got home and started opening it she peeked inside and said "THIS IS YOURS!!!" What a nice surprise.... thanks!

DOUGLAS HOLCK

Got my ball today! Thank you Destin for all your content and great outlook on life!

Hey Destin, our Baseball just made its way all the way across the Atlantic to Berlin. Thx a lot. I am a proud supporter of your channel and the incentive behind it. Keep continuing the great work. You are a true inspiration. Best wishes from Germany.

Jasper Büsch

Our baseball just made its way to us across the Atlantic and to the U.K. What an amazing way to create a sense of community! Coolest thing that has happened this year and ironically all because of covid and us looking for YouTube videos to make home schooling fun. We definitively met that objective!

Team Saunders

Jesting, I just forgot one thing. Do not worry about sending me anything. I’m just glad to help you out. I will be sending a lot more as soon as I can. What you’re doing is really cool!

Hello Justin, I saw one of your videos last week and I was really intrigued. You are an extremely good speaker, very likable, with a great personality. I then saw your baseball supersonic gun tonight And that took me to your page to start donating. I’ve been a business owner for 36 years and dealt with a lot of metal structures. If you ever want any suggestions feel free to get a hold of me. Again, you do a wonderful job and I wish you and your wife so much happiness. Reed

I got a signed baseball in the mail the other day, and I just want to say thank you. I appreciate your work, hope I can help someday soon.

AtHeartEngineer

Thanks, Destin!

I got a super dope notebook!

Just received my baseball in the mail! Thank you so much Destin, and keep up the good work!

Ruben Kwast

Hey, definitely don't post that information in a comment. We can all see that.

I added my address, but I have not received a baseball. Is there something else I need to do?

Thanks for teaching me about all these things and my favorite videos was when you got in a submarine supersonic jet.

Asdfghjkl Qwertyuiop

Destin! Thank you for the baseball; it was fun to watch this video with my son this morning and show him the baseball you sent to us. We continue to enjoy the content you create that represents the best of what the internet can and should be.

Louis D. Monaghan, Jr.

This video speaks to me on so many of the same levels. I had the same book as a kid, as Nolan Ryan is from a town right up the road from us. Thanks for the incredible content. SED is a staple in our high school rocket engineering courses.

Chris McLeod

Feel free to use my baseball in a contest where all the engineers use their skills to individually predict how far the baseball will travel. Let’s see who gets the closest. 😉👍

It became a summer ball. Summer here, summer there

I'm curious if the baseball from the initial test was ever found.

Kevin Albers

Awesome!

This is incredible. The excitement you bring in taking us on this adventure... thank you.

This was pretty awesome, I was giggling with Destin through it all ^^

After watching The Social Dilemma on Netflix I can really appreciate what you’re trying to do here. This is what I needed to make the jump to supporting on Patreon! Thank you for all that you do and create!

Me as well! Love what Destin is doing.

It turned into a 2 day project in my physics class. Estimating the weight of the target, the net force on the ball in the barrel, a rough, ideal estimate of the exit velocity from the force, measurements of velocity and acceleration from the slow motion, and comparison to the velocity from the Mach cone. The students got a head start on year 2 with research on gas laws, Doppler Effect, refraction with Schieren imaging, air resistance ... So cool.

That was amazing! Where can we learn more about that pressure wave?

Sean Kau

This video got me over the hump of pulling the trigger on the Patreon support. Loved the in-depth CAD explanation. That was really cool. Proud to be a supporter of a worthwhile educational outlet. Also, this video was the best intro by far. Keep up the great work, Destin! God bless.

My mind is blown. :) Great job

Honestly a smart way to get new supporters. Ive been watching since your collab with the Slow Mo Guys but never really got passed the hump from viewer to supporter until now. As a mechanical field tech, your content has always been great to watch and hopefully will continue to inspire people!

Love your channel and glad I could help out! Keep doing great things! PS Ultimate batter vs Supersonic baseball cannon needs to happen, Destin - the world needs to see it.

Question: Did you make a ridiculously overpowered baseball-vaporizing cannon because you LOVE baseball or because you HATE baseball? Either way, this is absolutely delightful. PLEASE develop this into a series and blast baseballs at anything and everything you can think of.

Andrew Phillips

This is awesome. I am having my physics 2 students give a predicted Pressure Force once the plug is open based on information in the video. For predicting speed, I am wondering if there is a way I can get an approximation about the frictional force of the ball in the barrel and the length of the barrel.

Great video as always! I bypass the great firewall just to watch Destin do stuff. Loves from China, I just wish the baseball don't get censord(confiscated) as well.

Now we need to get to 5 or 6 thousand feet per second, just to match cold war tank main guns! Roll Tide!

Glad I came across this video it was really fun and entertaining to watch and to see what happens when a baseball goes mach 1. Glad to be a new patreon member and to support the great works you will endeavor to create.

I agree, and your name throws me off when im looking for mine in the comments LoL

Clifton Ballad

This...... was...... nuts...... absolutely amazing. Lost for words about this video.

As much as I enjoyed learning something new by watching both YouTube channel videos, I was equally amused by the reactions of shear joy & giddiness on the part of the engineers/creators, welders, & children who got to witness the awesome device in action! :-) Instead of a representative baseball, I think it would be super-cool to have a small container of supersonic baseball debris! :-) Keep up the great work!

This is the video that made be become a patreon! Been following Destin for years and his content is amazing!

Hey, that's the video that got me too! Does that make us blood brothers?

Andrew Phillips

Make sure Smarter Every Day has your address.

Andrew Phillips

Long-term Patreon here. Welcome to all the new folks! Destin, I've never been prouder to be a part of your projects. This one tickled me in places I didn't even know existed. I hope to see more of this. Thank you for making the world a better place, one SPLAT at a time!

Andrew Phillips

As a current bubblehead, it's really cool to finally have a series that can adequately explain what it's like on board. Not being able to take pictures usually ends up feeling like explaining photography to a blind man.

How much did the barrel damage the stitching vs the friction with air? Any good shots of the ball emerging from the barrel? Any failure analysis on the engineering side? Looks like you built over 2x the pressure capacity you needed.

New supporter here! Glad to be a part of the family finally. Love the content, guys. Keep up the fantastic work!

Hi Destin, truly amazing video. The fun you had to make this project was shared with us while watching. This also gave me an idea. What about using this canon to sent the baseballs to Europe ? Greetings from France.

Miroirs d'Affo Dyle

Destin, thank you, you make having cut the cable worth while and so much more interesting

Hey Destin, could you try pressurizing the high pressure tank first and when it's at 750psi start with the vacuum. The vacuum seemed to be good initially but then slowly drops. By doing it the other way round you might get a more powerful shot.

I've been wanting to sign up for a while now and finally was able to! I love the baseball cannon and I'm looking forward to more. Sorry my pledge isn't higher but hopefully it will help.

I hear you Destin. Go make great videos at your own schedule! I'll support it! Thank you for your time and energy making internet an even better place!

dans

The the close up slow mo of the baseball somehow reminds me of the structure of the universe... Those fibers with the vast spaces in between, expanding... Beautiful!

Wow Destin. I only just started to watch SED and your SED 2 channel but I've been blown away with your content, literally with your last video :-) Happy to now be a Patreon supporter!

I've probably seen a dozen of your videos, but this is the one that inspired me to sign up on Patreon. I giggled like a child during the slow mo close up of the ball liquifying against the steel plate. Good pitch at the end too (NPI). Happy to be a small part of something truly unique and totally awesome. Don't grow up.

I would love to see you do two things with this awesome "business expense because I needed it for the channel". ;) First, I would love to see how high you could shoot a baseball with the "gun" at full power. Second, I would love to find out what elevation of the barrel would produce the farthest shot baseball and an explanation of why that is the case. Also, I loved the sketchfab? cut-away of the unit. Could you consider possibly coming out with some branded wallpapers of things like that or the MLB ball's "splat" into the backdrop? That kind of image medium could be a good marketing tool.

Daniel Eaton

So many questions... But first, thanks for doing these videos, they are excellent. Keep looking up for inspiration. The double match image.. isn't that an alignment issue with the schlerin? Isn't that why the first ball image was double? I assume you fixed it which is why the subsequent ball images were singular. Why were you wanting the speed of sound in nitrogen when you are actually interested in the speed of sound in the air the ball is imaged through? I can see why you would want to pressurize with dry N2 for moisture and gun preservation, but it shouldn't matter because the ball speed is measured in the air. Looks like you need to experiment with various sabots around the ball to protect the laces, to control the rotation, to reduce the friction, and to investigate variations in the travel path given ball rotation or surface prep (pitchers sanding or scratching the ball). All this with variation of velocity around normal pitching speed. The batting arrangement showed the influence of rotation on the ball travel. It was curving after the bat, but that stopped and the travel was straight. You could create a sub industry for pitchers so they could measure at what point in travel the ball starts to curve given the speed of the throw and the surface abrasion or lacing location. How are you going to keep the inside of the chamber from rusting? Did you paint the inside as well? Fogging it may not be a good idea for explosive reasons. The oil film would end up on your lenses sooner or later. It looks like your damper needs a strap, referenced to the chamber so it is in line with the direction of force, and not attached to the aluminum support structure. PS. The audio guy did a fantastic job on this video. Dare we call him the foley engineer? Really great.

I sit and watch your vids at bath time with my 5yr old who is captivated, you, and Rober also btw. Both of you make science accessible to me AND him, he now wants to make a machine to make pokemon real and administer super powers... 😂. About time I paid it forward. Love the baseball cannon. Brilliant!

Long time watcher... it's time I started supporting! Amazing video! Time to watch the behind the scenes!

Timmah

This was amazing!

How do I get the baseball? 🤔🤔

I’m super excited to have a baseball with your log as a reminder of the value of curiosity and hard work. I’m happy to support your continued efforts to bring incredible aspects of the world into my life. Thanks Destin!!

Doubled my pledge. Hope to see more serious builds like this!

Yiding Jia

That's a fast knuckleball !! After pondering I've concluded the bow wave and turbulent tail per the schlerin photos kept the ball trajectory stable for its brief free flight . Now what happens if you impart spin ?

Well you have compelled me to become a patron sponsor. The design and function of your supersonic baseball canon was exceptional. I'm a retired engineer/inventor who started as a machinist and snuck into engineering through the back door. I designed and built a wide variety of machinery, so have an intimate understanding of the most of the issues you encountered. I was fortunate to always have creative positions and fun doing my job though I'm not sure I ever had as much fun as you do!

You put Max Scherzer to shame.

This build was amazing, and I laughed out loud at the line about blacksmiths and engineers. My dad’s dad (a machinist) knew my stepmom’s dad (an engineer) at Pratt & Whitney way before my dad and stepmom knew each other. The machinist would complain decades later of the engineer sending down plans for turbine blades that couldn’t be made.

Patrick Ford

Great project, enjoyed watching grown men giggle like 10 year olds. LOL ! Aboard one of my Navy ships we built a "grapefruit cannon" that used oxy-acetylene as fuel and was fired by a .25 caliber blank from a nailer gun. Once we got it working well we would inject sea marker rescue dye into the grapefruit and freeze them. When we came along side other ships during underway replenishment etc. we would fire the cannon at the side of the other ship and boom...splat and the side of the gray ships hull would have a large splatter of florescent green dye that glowed green when exposed to water. Whoever struck first was the winner! Navy sailors have all kinds of ways to enjoy the time at sea. A lot of other shenanigans were used but this one was my favorite. By the way, as a pitcher for a minor-minor league team in my youth I threw 90 mph fastballs (by radar gun) on more than one occasion. Nolan Ryan was one of my heroes! Thanks for your work.

Clearly the only logical place to go from here is aiming vertical! Amazing work as always Destin, more than happy to contribute to your efforts. Well earned.

thanks for all the education Destin.

Glad I found video 203 so I could figure out what I should be looking for on the shockwave. Signed up because this video was awesome and would like to see more videos that can't be sponsored.

Ryan Hamm

Amazing idea! Keep up the great work. Greetings from Germany

Same as some of the others - First time supporting someone on Patreon(be gentle). I've watched a fair few of your videos, but that Sonic Baseball Gun was what won me over, and convinced me that you that deserve my subscription :) Keep up the great work and I hope you get many more Patreons!

The air cannon system reminded me of my apparatus that I built and worked with for my doctoral work at Caltech. Back then, I used high speed film cameras at 1k-5k fps. It is so nice to see what you are doing in your videos.

Incredible work, Destin!! My kids, wife and I started watching your videos a few weeks ago and are *loving* them. Absolutely no idea how to do any of this stuff, but we have so much fun watching. Thanks so much and happy to support!

Celeste Irwin

Destin, love your curiosity and drive to make ideas a reality. This video was awesome and like you said tickled all the right engineering areas of the brain - reminded me of my marble cannon my friends and I made when we were younger. It also hit close to home as an aerospace valve/component engineer - designing valve seats, dynamic seals (and their sensitivity), balancing pressure areas, etc. I think adding an internal “snubber” to the back side assembly could eliminate the external damper you have which looks to be yielding the two off-axis supporting rods. Happy firing and I hope it isn’t too difficult to convince a baseball field manager to put this up against the home run hitter!

Hi from Spain Destin! I really love your work, you’re awsome! Really happy to become a new Patreon! Can’t wait for the next video... congrats buddie!

Hey Destin I've tried to update my address a couple times but it won't let me do, I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong.

This is amazing I have never been a patron before

I’ve been watching Smarter Every Day for a long time and your videos always impress me but this one was just different. I literally said “wow” I don’t know how many times and I knew immediately I had to come support.

I have been watching the craziness on SED for while. I know now what a Prince Rupert's drop is, and I thank you for that! I dig the channel, and watch all the time. You have the limited support I can give for now for more great content. Loved the supersonic baseball video; go Science! ... never knew a baseball can look like an egg smashing against a wall!

Made the jump to Patreon after this video. You mixed two of my favorite things... Baseball and science! I got into the aerospace indusrty because of you! Thanks Destin!

I’m sure with all the brain power involved in the project that Destin could calculate the required direction and trajectory then use the cannon to shoot each Patreon recipient’s baseball to its intended address anywhere in North America. This could save on shipping costs! 😁

I'm finally in a position to help SmarterEveryDay after years of absorbing all of your great content! Keep being you and doing what you do Destin and friends!!

Count me as another new patron inspired by this awesome video. I've been toying with contributing for some time ... this pushed me way over the edge. I enjoy all of your videos but this was in a class by itself. Keep it up!

Howdy Destin. Love the videos. Is there anyway that you could send some of the supersonic shrapnel with my baseball? That would be awesome.

I sm a Texan living in Hong Kong, and you are my first Patreon... You knocked this one out of the park!!! Hope I can score a signed one!!!

This is the video that finally forced me to sign up for Patreon so I could support you. I love your videos and recommend people subscribe, but I’m putting my money where my mouth is and saying WE WANT MORE! This was so good, I even took a photo of that baseball face-planted into the steel and sent it to my brother as a teaser when I shared the youtube link with him. This video was like Veritasium + Colin Furze amped up to 11. Love it!

When veritasium did something similar with shade balls I immediately signed up for patreon and made him my first sub and have been a supporter ever since I have no issues doing the same for you Destin and can't wait to see what you can do with more freedom

Loved the video and seeing the shockwave. Would live to learn what that recoil wave was. Any thoughts on rifling a barrel and seeing if you can throw a supersonic curve ball?

this was AWESOME! The look on your face when you realized that you actually achieved +Mach1 was priceless! Have you done a dive into where your calculations were wrong since you didn't expect to do so on the first try? Can't wait to see how far you can push this system!

That. Was. Awesome!! I watch your videos with one of my sons when he's with me. We talk about your videos all the time. I hope you haven't run out of baseballs, because it's going to be a gift to him. I'll get him a display case and everything. Thank you, Destin, for making science and learning an absolute blast (pun intended)!

My wife and I watch these videos together after our evening meal and we always get a huge kick from these. We’ve been talking about sponsoring for a little while now, and I am so happy to have done so now.

Hello everyone, been watching a lot of Destin videos, this one had that extra heartfelt message. I signed up. Wishing you, your family and team all the best.

Thans Destin, for yet another display of pure joy at the love of science. I have to say, as others have, that this pushed me over the edge into the world of Patreon. Keep being awesome!

John Cox

Incredible video! Loved every moment. It would be really helpful if your videos had SI measurements though. I'm sure the channel has a wide audience outside of the US. And metric makes the math so much easier! Thanks Destin!

This was the push I needed to become a patron. Keep up the great work Destin!

I've been watching this channel for A while now and I have to say this was one of the best videos I've watched and one thing I must know is the ballistic trajectory of this super sonic ball

Really enjoyed both videos. Incredible stuff. I miss seeing this kind of fabrication, with its mix of enormous heavy steel parts and precision assemblies. Amazing stuff.

Erin Eldridge

This made me giggle so much my partner came over to see. She raised an eyebrow and asked why. I said why not? She nodded.

ConfusedRaccoon

I’d like to see what this thing can do to a catcher’s mitt! And please see how far this thing can shoot!

We know what happens when it hits a steel wall... What about a melon, show people just how dangerous it really is

Martin Croft

The supersonic baseball was awesome! I’m very excited for the next submarine video too!

Catherine Thompson

Dude, you reeled me in with your request for patreon assistance. Loving what I've seen on your channel, and that baseball disintegration was epic! My wife had to hear me blurt out, oh look, its a knuckle ball, as the slow mo version the ball on its way to the target. lol. Cheers, Lee

Thank you for all these years of content. This is my #1 favorite video now. Passed up the "why you should put your mask on first". Its that good.

I've been a huge fan for years, and watching and commenting on new videos has been something my dad and I have shared for those many years. You're a sincere guy who happens to be brilliant and good at making content. I've wanted to be a supporter for a long time and a new job finally made that possible. Keep up the great work!

Hey I love your videos and the heartfelt patreon pitch was well done, you've got me.

semanticboat

Please, do not feel guilty! You're under no obligation whatsoever to be a Patron.

Thank you very much Anthony. And thanks for being a Patron for a while now!

Smarter Every Day

I took.... liberties... with. the closed captioning

Smarter Every Day

If it hasn't been said, lube your Baseballs. It looks like a significant amount of friction is happening in the barrel.

I learned about spiral wound gaskets on this little adventure. That was new to me!

#TrashPandaNation. Some other people have said they think it's a reflection off the mirror, but I'm not prepared to make a definitive judgement on what it is!

Smarter Every Day

Thank you for the kind words Grant! My goal is to continue to earn your support!

Smarter Every Day

Thank you Jim. That distinction is very important to me. It's not a transactional thing, I get that... but the baseball is pretty cool!

Smarter Every Day

Have you watched the behind the scenes video?

Smarter Every Day

Absolutely. Several more.

Smarter Every Day

Yes this was a tremendous investment and would not have been possible without Patron support, so thank you for jumping into the ranks of fellow thinkers and doers!

Smarter Every Day

It was obviously happening when the tank pressure got to a certain point. I think it's the force imbalance on the rod.

Smarter Every Day

Thanks man!

Smarter Every Day

Definitely room for improvement there.

Smarter Every Day

Having signed my blood oath long ago when your sister displayed some exceptional marksmanship, You have no idea how badly I wish I lived close enough to have helped you fabricate and weld this amazing contraption... I have an idea for a safety cage that i will message you about, no more annoyingly heavy plate shield to hide behind.

Thank you Rosier! I'm glad things are working out for you again!

Smarter Every Day

Thanks for supporting for so long Robert. I'm grateful man.

Smarter Every Day

Haha. I can imagine someone pouring a bucket of baseballs into a wood chipper.

Smarter Every Day

Thanks for jumping on board Nate! Yeah, I want the freedom to make whatever my mind can create, and you're helping me do that now. Thanks man!

Smarter Every Day

Thank you so much Michael!

Smarter Every Day

Smarter Every Day

Absolutely loved this video, and have been an admirer of your work for a long time. Finally made it to a situation where I could more financially show support for such a sincerely honest and good person. Also, I commented to my husband about the baseball jersey you were wearing at the start and how fun of a team name that was - thrilled to learn it's a real team! They are certainly going to gain a few new fans in my household. Thanks again for all that you do!

Hey Destin, I just wanted to share that if I get an unsigned ball that will make me really sad hehehe. Please take your time with the signatures, I understand how exhausting it would be but try to sign balls for everyone.

Vipul Kapoor

I had dropped my patronage when I lost my previous job. Thankfully started a new one now. The Patreon shoutout at the end of this video reminded me to go and become your patron again now that I have steady income back. Love your videos and your approach to the world!

Your channel is the only one I have felt deserving of support. Thank you so much for the awesome content

Thank you for the support Daniel! I was so surprised when it worked on the first shot. Absolutely crazy

Me too.

Smarter Every Day

Thank you so much for jumping in on this Jesse. I'll do my best to contiue to earn it.

Smarter Every Day

I think the back mechanism needs a bit of. a redesign first. heavy mods at least.

Smarter Every Day

Thanks Danny!

Smarter Every Day

It will happen.

Smarter Every Day

Go watch some Nolan Ryan highlights on the internet and you might start to appreciate the game. It's like a chess game.

Smarter Every Day

It had to be done.

Smarter Every Day

That's awesome! I haven't worked out the math yet. The 12ft from stob to stob was measured on the left top edge of each.

Smarter Every Day

AWESOME

Smarter Every Day

There's a force imbalance in the back (by design). The higher the pressure, the higher the force imbalance

Smarter Every Day

It might just be little leather bits when you get it, that cool?

Smarter Every Day

Thank you very much!

Smarter Every Day

Thank you for taking the jump to become a patron. I hope to continue to earn your support with every video. Yes! I have ideas about how to improve!

Smarter Every Day

Absolutely!

Smarter Every Day

Me too! This was obviously just the first video. I think we need to do a bit of redesign on the rear mechanism before we're ready for full power.

Smarter Every Day

Awesome! It took a long time to get them ready so I hope you love it.

Smarter Every Day

Thanks for the video it was awesome! I have updated my mailing address so I can put the baseball with my Winged Hussar sticker and pin!

I’m still trying to figure out why the barrel was losing vacuum once the psi in the cannon got too high. Being for the most part two separate pieces I wonder if it has anything to do with the canon at all, or if it’s just the fact that it takes a long time to pressurize the cannon.

Okay but hear me out... Deliver my baseball by launching it from the cannon.

KodeTen

Hi Destin I am finally in a financial situation where I can make a steady donation to you even if it is one of the lowest teirs i know that everything helps especially in times like these your videos have provided me with the information I’ve needed over this pandemic to keep my self sain I am forever great full for you and owe you much more then the donation I can give best

Hey Destin. I just became a patron for your channel! I've been watching your stuff for a long time now and I really like the type of content you create! I also appreciate your family oriented nature. So about that base ball cannon... I noticed you stopped increasing pressure/ vacuum once you achieved the speed you wanted. So I'm wondering... what will happen if you pressurized it to the target 750psi and achieved a near perfect vacuum?? Yeah! I'm thinking that ball will go 1 minute into the future!! Lol

The montage shot where you were panning the video and stopping at each person was super cool! You're not only getting smarter every day, your video editing and cinematic style is improving every day too! You're such an inspiration! Keep up the interesting videos!

This was one of the best videos I've seen in a long time! That had to be so exciting to calculate over a mach 1 velocity when you weren't expecting it!

Dude... no words. That was AMAZING!

I loved the baseball canon! But you never went up to more than 570 psi. Now I wanna know how fast a baseball can really go! Looking forward to getting one of those balls. Keep it up! :)

Can’t wait for my baseball lol i love to support anyone with a passion. #BeFree

I like how at around 20:12, the baseball looks a bit like a photoenlargement of itself, if for just a brief time before all hell breaks loose.

Destin, you said it best in your podcast some time ago. To support the people who bring value to your life. I can honestly say you, your channel, and the people around you bring value to my life, and my family's lives. Thank you, Sir.

When will we see an episode showing you maxing out the capabilities, though?

I'm pretty sure there was a larger circle for snatch blocks, encompassing the whole thing.. he was just zoomed in so far, we couldn't see the label!! ;-)

Steve Jones

Just shoot the ball - It should make it from Alabama at that speed..

Steve Jones

Your enthusiasm and love for what you do is amazing! More than happy to help support you making more awesome content like this :D

Mythbusters did something similar with a ping pong ball they got it over 1000 mph two using nothing but vacuum

Alex Gorell

Could you make a nerd video on the deveopment and math of that project? That would be really amazing. How you calculated what you need? What's the advantage of the vacuum? (After all it gives you only 14psi more difference pressure). Whats the advantage of the nitrogen? What's the limiting factor/element? What about the time, that the air needs to enter the tube? Which projectile weight would be the best to a) reach highest speed, b) highest projectile energy? How much energy is lost in the movement of the cannon itself. (its rolling backwards!). Many many questions.

Stefan Schloesser

What about Mach 2?

I don't even like baseball and this is the best video on the internet

This is by far the craziest, nerdiest, technically challanging and funniest private project I've ever seen on youtube. As you said "supersonic baseball cannon" and "welders" I never thought you are going to build a copy of a 2nd WW FLAK cannon. Man that's impressive.

Stefan Schloesser

Destin, I thought I'd use your video in my HS physics class. I used the slow motion clip in Tracker and got the same average speed as you, but a fairly constant acceleration of 12 000 m/s2! I can't find any errors in my work, but I end up with a drag coefficient of 3.15 using the speed squared model, which doesn't seem to be in the range of published data. I'm guessing it's related to going faster than the speed of sound, but I read that drag actually drops past the speed of sound. You mentioned the coefficient in the video, so I look forward to hearing about your analysis, assuming you do one.

Thank you for attempting this: https://what-if.xkcd.com/1/

Watched your cool video on the supersonic baseball! Very interesting and just supported you on Patreon! Keep up the work.

Amazing Dustin! Keep up making us after every day ☺️

Which bit of the world wide Saunders clan are you from? We are U.K.

Team Saunders

Finally joined Patreon thanks to your supersonic baseball video! Fantastic videography!

ElbowDeepInAHorse

This was so awesome Dustin! I just purchased a Trash Panda hat! Its one of the coolest designs I've ever seen

This was truly amazing. I've been following you for years, and I constantly talk to people about your stuff, and I love learning and exploring with you. I feel like I'm finally in a position where I can support you the way I want to, so I finally pledged here. Thank you so much for all you do. Looking forward to that baseball!

Have to put a comment as a) that is one the coolest internet videos I have ever watched and I had a smile on my face the from beginning to end and i am seriously considering waking the kids up on a school night to show them it now rather than wait for breakfast and b) two Saunders’ leaving a comment one after the other! All sauderi love smarter everyday! (Hello from the U.K. chapter)

Team Saunders

Joined up on patreon for the baseball. Great way to get people to sign up. Worked for me!

I have been watching your videos for years now but felt guilty after watching “Supersonic Baseball Cannon” for not supporting you on Patreon. You deserve much more. Keep doing good work Destin..!

So I just did a back of the envelope calculation, and a baseball traveling at 1,048.9 m/h as the same energy as 4 grams of TNT.

This video gave me frisson when we first get to see the Schlieren of the baseball and the reaction of Destin and the team. I don't think a Youtube video has ever given me that experience. Hats off to Destin and everyone involved at Smarter Every Day for making a truly expert science communication video!

I'm all for you not being beholden to outside influences :)

marenoodles

I was extremely surprised that snatch blocks didn't make it into the venn diagram

I think [excited redneck noises] (8:51) is the best bit of subtitling I've seen. Also, was I supposed to giggle at baseballs becoming confetti? Because that also happened.

Alan Mackie

Haha Destin, you always seem to make a fun video but this one was so so neat. I used to design ASME pressure vessels. So this one was even closer to home. Keep it up Brother! Awesome work!! I updated my address also. My 5 year old daughter is super excited about the baseball, haha.

I never knew that I wanted to see a baseball go supersonic until I saw this video. Now I wonder how I could’ve ever not. Love it!

KenKodz

Hi Destin! I’ve watched and enjoyed your videos for many years now. The baseball was enough for me to take the leap and set up a Patreon account just to subscribe to you and your work. Your passion for science is truly inspiring. I think your true gift is how you communicate that passion for science in a way that brings everyone along. I look forward to more content (and the baseball 😁)

You're so wholesome! It truly geeks me to see someone so passionate about things they're curious about & accomplish such large tasks/experiments. I appreciate you Destin! Thank you very much for making us Smarter Every Day :)

Adrian Vargas

Hi destin love your work all the way from India for the past 8 years. The baseball may or may not be international but I just really wanted to show you that the videos that you make really do reach all corners of the world.

Awesome work! Got me to rejoin the patrons. I love the Trash Pandas! I tweeted this at you, so apologies for doubling up, but did you ever look into the "ripple" you saw following the baseball? I'm 80% sure it's the shockwave reflecting off the Schlieren mirror! It bounces off the mirror, then "focuses" back towards the camera. You can see the same thing in your whip behind-the-scenes video, timecode 7:22. However I can't explain why the "sonic focal point" is so much closer to the mirror than the optical one.

I love your work Destin it always brightens my day and grabs my attention!! It’s so interesting watching your thought processes and how well you pick your own brain. So fascinating. Keep up the good work and shut up and take my money! Patreon for life😁👍🏼👍🏼

You know, the baseball pieces would also make a fantastic gift! Love the video, keep up the good work!

Destin, I’ve been following your work for years now and I just want to tell you how inspiring you are! Thank you for everything you do and I am now a proud member of your Patreon! I can’t wait to see what you do next!!!

Conor Keane

I signed up in hopes your next cannon can shoot a baseball into space.

Every Tier!!

Smarter Every Day

Every tier!!!

Smarter Every Day

Destin, is their a certain tier to patreon you must be to have a baseball sent to you? Great video as always!

Not every day does a video make me say, without embellishment - "whoa." Thanks for all that you do!

This video is so good!!

My kids witnessed a solar eclipse snake in person because we were prepared and inspired by YOU. I'm proud to have you be the first creator I support on Patreon. I didn't sign up for the baseball. I signed up because you asked. Thanks for all you do!

Jim Jernigan

Great stuff. You are building the things we‘d wish we could have when we were youngsters. Getting Work and Family in-balance is difficult enough for the most of us. Can you do an in depth tour of the cannon? Why is your vacuum pump smoking? What is the measurement error with the sticks-method? Keep it up! The baseball will be a nice reminder to be curious and have fun while doing that. Thanks !

Btw, I’ve been following since before the cat flip video came out... way way back

Hi Destin, very cool video, one question - will there be more submarine videos? :)

man... you got my patreon subscription with this video... my wife could hear me giggling watching the video on the other side of the house! Haha. Seriously though, keep up the good work... I could tell this this video/experiment HAD to cost many thousands of dollars. Good work though. I wonder what else you can use that cannon for!?!?! I’m sure it will show up in other videos :D

Long time fan! First time becoming a patreon supporter for anyone. My kids are too young now, but I'll be showing all your videos to them. Your content has substantial content and quality. One of the best I've seen. Keep it up!

Awesome video! Did you find out why the vacuum was not holding?

Now I get it. You are the first creator I’ve signed up on Patreon for. I can’t wait to see what you do next.

Bolt 78

My son (8yrs old) loved this video and enjoyed analyzing the shake on the shock absorber.

This video came out on the day that I'm able to re-support several creators I had to drop because of the pandemic squeeze. I'm excited to support SED again and especially support this supersonic baseball cannon!

RMD Cade

WOOHOO! Oh, wow, Destin, this is fabulous! Whole family sat rapt watching this after church! SA-WEET!

Robert Keiser

Any chance you might be making a trip to Cooperstown with that?

William

This episode had me chuckling excitedly! Hrmmm... so, at that the supersonic velocity you demonstrated, how far would a baseball fly through the air before falling to the ground, and would it be relatively intact when/if recovered? Sounds like a math problem I should be able to figure out. 😛

Jeff Carter

If you promised to send out MR branded watermelons, I'd join your patreon. :D

Neal

Is there a certain tier for the baseballs? The video was fantastic to watch btw

How much do we need to donate to get a baggie of destroyed baseball bits?

DOUGLAS HOLCK

Thanks for the extra push to get me into Patreon. Amazing work. It worked on the first try!

Really enjoy your enthusiasm and curiosity. Thanks for sharing your insights and discoveries with us!!

You got me with the juicy reward of the signed baseball. I'm sending you $50/month so don't screw this up ;)

Thanks Destin for what you do. Makes me think of one of my favorite movie scenes of all time: https://youtu.be/m4ceNVzIShg?t=37

Neal

Lol man, you finally got me. You really really sold it in the last few minutes of that video.1st time ever supporting a YouTuber also. Huge fan and also a fellow Alabamian lol. Thank you for everything you do.

Is there going to be a part 2? Please tell me you are going to fix the vacuum leak and fire a baseball in a vacuum with 1000 psi behind it.

This was a pretty epic video. I was all ready for this to be a 2 part video when you gave the intro on how you would need to dial the settings in and the look on you face when you saw the MACH cone was priceless. We are glad we can help you make videos like this.

Dan & Jen Baizel

this is by far one of the coolest videos I've ever seen

Hi Destin! I have been watching for many years now (I think the first was the poop splash vid when it was uploaded). You're the first YT'er that I've ever supported, and I couldn't be more grateful for the videos you produce! Thank you! Great job on the supersonic baseball video!

It’s truly amazing what you and those that assist you do. Gladly signed up for patreon to help you out. I get excited every time there’s a video. Thank you so much for what you do!

Michael Bonetti

Your face when you saw it was over mach 1, unforgetable :D Also thanks for doing amazing stuff

Just thinking about what to do with a slightly used baseball canon, and I'm thinking you MUST point it vertically and see how high a supersonic baseball will fly! I'm not sure how you'd measure it, other than time of flight and back into the height, and even that assumes you can predict/control where it lands, but maybe you can make a baseball analog.. same size/weight with telemetry.. I'd LOVE to see that.. Also, if it's consistent / predictable, I wonder if you could fire at an angle, and measure it's terminal velocity a couple miles downrange, and see if it's safe to catch.. I know I made the bad decision to try to catch a potato from a potato cannon back in the 90s, and was lucky enough to have just enough time to get out of the way at a range of about 100 yards.. Hopefully I've gotten "smarter every day" since that questionable decision to try that!

Steve Jones

DESTIN!!! You've officially reached crazy scientist (engineer?) levels! A SUPERSONIC BASBEBALL CANON!!??? ARE YOU KIDDING ME!! Now THIS is what I support you for! Seriously, this is amazing, and you are amazing. Sorry for all the yelling, I got a little excited. You have had my support for years, and you continue to have it. Keep up the good work!

Daniel Ryan

I have been following the channel since the dragon fly flight control and butterfly wing times. Thank you for keeping the wonder in new discovery & experimentation. Your work Destin is legitimately inspiring.

This video made me join patreon and sub to you! Amazing video :)

I was trying to buy a baseball from your store and then saw I was getting one at the end of the video. It is also a combination of loves for me and my husband.

Heather Brooks

Im still quite young, but I have learned so much already just from Destin alone, I thought I'd give some back and become a patreon. This is amazing, you are helping ppl. :D

That is insane! Do you plan to up the pressure, or are you already at the design limits?

Lukas

This video was awesome! Thank you for all the sacrifices you’ve made to put out so much great content over the years!

Quite possibly one of the coolest projects your have done!

just joined looking forward to supporting your future projects

AWESOME video! I dont know who the Trash Pandas will play, but hoping I'll get to see them sometime play the Frederick Keys or Bowie Baysox (Maryland!)

Steve Jones

This video was fantastic. It combined my love of baseball, science and math, and life mission. Even as a college student with limited funds I really wanted to support Destin and the content that he creates because it was extremely clear that he not only wants to make learning fun and exciting. Destin, when all of this stuff is over I would love for you to come and talk at my school, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. It's an amazing place where everyone loves engineering and learning hands-on and I think that you'd be a fantastic speaking guest.

This video convinced me to become a patron.

very cool 🇺🇸
