Breaking Into A Smart Home With A Laser

I'm not going to lie.... I spent much longer than I should have trying to figure out whether or not to capitalize A's in the title.

This is 100% Patreon Supported video.  Thank you so much for allowing me to do this!  I found this paper a month and a half or so ago and really wanted to understand it better.  Lucky for me Ben was originally from Huntsville and was coming down for Thanksgiving!  I hope you enjoy this, and please.... configure your smart devices in the most secure way possible.

Merry Christmas,

Destin

Breaking Into A Smart Home With A Laser

Comments

This video is one of my kids favorite videos, especially when you say Google, we are going to shoot you with a laser

This is interesting, but ideally you would be evaluating the security compared to the alternative. Conventional locks can also be picked, and probably require even less skill.

Wow! What an Eye opener! Great shows Destin!

Wow, who would of thought. Thank you again for the time you took on this, glad we can all team up with you in small ways!

Destin, we and our 5 girls have been fans of SED since about the time we discovered the slo-mo footage of guns discharging under water. Or shooting a donut. We always enjoy the Reepicheep logo and scripture reference at the end of an episode. Today our 14-year-old asked if you could make an episode on slings. So I'm passing on that request.

Hey Destin. I just want to say thanks. Your videos and incredibly positive yet always questioning attitude are beyond inspiring. Thank you for being a source of truth in an otherwise messy world. I'm really glad people like you exist.

This was so good.

Suggestion for next time.. a version of this video with trigger words ("ok google" ) bleeped out.

Thanks Destin, now I can't see the title without emphasizing the A's, as if you're clarifying we're not performing a multi-home, multi-laser experiment here: "Breaking into *a* smart home with *a* laser"

Great topic and video!

Hey Destin, this video had me wondering what the light "sounds" like to the devices. I know that at least with Google, you can look online and hear the recording of everything it's ever recorded you saying (unless your settings prevent it). I would love to hear some of those recordings from this experiment, if you're willing to share it.

This was so fun to watch. I've been doing my own research on unintended consequences of 5G and it brought me to the surprising realization that it might let us see through clothing lol

Giffy

Yeah I’m with you. On YouTube I did one of each which hurts the OCD.

Yes, having a discussion with the people behind the scenes at companies like that is a little bit tricky for sure. I felt really good about this. Almost like a blind experiment.

Smarter Every Day

Thank you so much!

I love your channel. Just signed up to donate every video. Keep it going.

Thanks for covering it! Having always known that I can ask alexa to turn off my lights from outside is the main reason I just avoid giving her power over security locks. Most apartments use key fobs now, which aren't really buzz wordy so I wonder if they have some unknown vulnerabilities. At the very least I know there must be a master fob because my apt can open my door for me if i lose my keys.

Destin, I'm a longtime fan and new Patreon supporter… Thanks for bringing Light to this issue without exaggerating it.

https://youtu.be/vGjP9SE7tsM shows a laser system that can track and target mosquitoes in real time. Imagine if it could target smartphone microphones instead, using an infrared laser.

IoT: The S is for "Security."

I've been reluctant to embrace the IOT due to early issues with the toolkit. Seems like there's always a bug that allows a buffer overrun attack or something. Aside from this vulnerability, is the IOT rock solid now? Seems like anything on the internet is risky.

Love that you did not take any sponsorship for this. I immediately went to Patreon and signed up. I was a little concerned about the social media series you did. Those videos were very informative but, the implied sponsorship (they gave you access) made me think that you were less critical than you could have been. This one holds more weight because you went and bought the products off the shelf and had no interactions with the manufacturers.

Nicholas Gross

Yikes.

Dustin

Haha I was just doing the exact thing for my video. Looking forward to this one as always. Very interesting

Merry Christmas!

Thanks Destin!

It looks weird with the As capitalized
