In this vein, I want to recommend reading Them: Why We Hate Each Other--and How to Heal by Ben E. Sasse. It has endorsements from both sides of the spectrum but is not a political book. Senator Sasse makes the argument that the national fabric of civic engagement is breaking down and we're lonely. Our loneliness is prompting us to turn to polititainment for comfort and lash out with our hurts.

Christopher

You could be right, Steve. I have come to think of "the people" and "politicians" as entirely two different things...politicians certainly seem to think so. :-)

KC

that sounds like the 'people domain' the general described

Steve

I like how WE THE PEOPLE was written where a bible reference would usually go at the end of the video. It's just another scripture being cited as far as I'm concerned.

Steve

I have a thought on your defense of being able to disagree politely and thoughtfully. I personally make every effort to do exactly this right now. It's one of the reasons i'm able to converse with people who don't agree with me politically well, and why i'm able to challenge the ideas of even those I *do* agree with well. The problem is the amount of effort this can take. Being polite and arguing well can take energy, heart, and soul. This is fine for me. The disagreements and discussions I get into are not an all-consuming part of my life, and I can disengage from these and step away as much as I need to. But this isn't everyone. People who, for whatever reason, end up with much more attention than me have to deal with arguments, both thoughtful and not, in much more massive volume. I would suppose you know this being a youtuber of some fame, but i would also suspect this applies to people who, for various reasons, can't handle volume as well as you can. My point isn't to completely denigrate your idea, because I *do* believe it has merit. I fully intend to continue to behave in exactly the way you describe. But I would point out that that kind of behavior isn't for everyone, and likely least of all for those who have a huge audience and could have to deal with disagreements coming from all angles.

The first thought that came into my mind would be the environment impact of that ship being targeted. I imagine people in the military have thought about that issue and they probably prepped the ship before hand. Eg removing the oils and other contaminants. I did notice during your videos the radar tower thingy was running though so there has to be some power going to the ship.

Hey Destin, thats probably the most controversial video you made. And I am not sure, if I like it or not. Although I am really thankful for that insight, for me that is really a propaganda video, promoting Military as a whole and armament. I really appreciate, that you brake it down to "the art of disagreeing well", but even you in your last note talk about "them" trying to divide "us", "this attack", "they are gonna find a division in our society", ..., "unity", ... This is standard crowd manipulation by leaders: Make the crowd feel an external threat, and you have the right and the force to "unite" them (behind your opinion). Because "uniting" always means: abandon diversity. That gives you power. And thats been used for centuries in history. Domestically attacked leaders always started external conflicts. Why don't you extend your request for learning the "art of disagreeing well" to "with them"? If we would "disagree well" all over the world, we would not need military. Even more, I dislike two often heard arguments: * "We protect our soldiers, thats not aggressive. That can't be bad." (In fact, the best protected Soldier is the strongest in field. And a perfectly protected army will very likely have no doubt at all to start any military intervention) * "We must be the strongest, so no one will attack us, so we do not need to fight. (implying: that would be peace on earth)" No, this will lead to us attacking others, because we are the strongest. Its balance, that causes peace, not maximum strength. When, in history have the US been attacked externally? One of the biggest countries in the world, surrounded by oceans, is frightened to be attacked? By whom? Sorry Destin, you just have been manipulated to manipulate others and spread the ideas of the US military.

Destin, great video. It reaffirms what we watch and read influence our world view. Unfortunately other nation states can influence that world view. It brings to light what I need to do, and that's to get positive influences such as listening to books (sorry I'm going to endorse libraries here since I don't have to pay for it like audible). The video did reveal to me just how suceptible we are for social engineering, good or bad. We need to be aware of that. In addition to the political/military it brings up leadership. The General kept mentioning empowering. That is exactly what I am trying to do with my team. Empower them to make things better. It's hard when you are a first level manager, but got to start somewhere.

From my understanding and I'm not military so someone will correct me. A 4 star general is similiar to a C level position in a corporation., like a CFO or CIO. They manage a particular segment of the arms forces. According to wikipedia, there are 14 in the army. Each branch operates independently, but reports through the secretory of defense to the commander and chief (president). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_active_duty_United_States_four-star_officers. Someone from the military could give a much more detailed description than I can.

Andrew Krob

So anybody here that can explain to an ignorant non militarily person what a 4 star general is? And also why that's a big deal. I know I probably sound really disrespectful, but this just isn't my stomping ground. Like I kinda figure they must be important but I have no clue. Also this video I think may be my favorite that you've made.

Holy dot cow! What an outstanding and informative video. Thank you so much!! One domain that wasn't mentioned by General Brown was politics and it can be the most disruptive domain of all. In fact, politicians use the same multidimensional concept to achieve their ends. I do agree with your summation regarding unity of purpose and mutual respect.

KC

Also, As someone who's worked in the high speed imagery field, that shot of the torpedo hit was really, really cool! Thanks for sharing!

Defending against all enemies foreign and domestic, also includes understanding and helping others not to be dumb. As you say, you must be an expert in various points of view, especially those contrary to your own, and I thank you, while not a service member, for your work to keep our country safe!

Cousin Vinnie

I tip my hat to you, yet again, Destin. Your curiosity, attitude, experience and grace, are well communicated once more. It is gratifying to see military commanders thinking so clearly and broadly about their roles and the world today.

Destin, sent you a note because I have things in it I don't want public. But, to summarize, thank you and Gen. Brown.

Phil Moyer

Gene, thanks, I have a different take on this. I've seen the divisions we have in our country as a threat an enemy could exploit, is exploiting. But I've never been able to articulate it anywhere near as well as Destin does here, treating it as one element of a multi domain conflict. For that reason, I'd like to see Destin get this video-- and the call for unity at the end-- in front of as many people as possible. If making it free-- or creating a short form version that a broader audience would watch-- gets that done, I'm in favor of it. That's *not* a slight against on the value of the video or Destin's time. On the contrary-- it's recognizing it's important enough it should be seen broadly. Thanks-- and thanks for your work at DoD making the country safer

You can have a dollar for this vid man, It was one of your best. My jaw was hanging open for the first half of it and I cant express how jealous I am. The second half had more insight into the world we live in than I've seen anywhere else, and was a thousand times more useful than the nightly news...

You weren't on the clock during the interview or during the hours of editing this video. Really, this video should "count" as a Patreon video. Especially proud to sponsor important thought-provoking videos like this one.

I love that you quote G.I. Joe! https://youtu.be/pele5vptVgc

Very impressive and great video (in many respects). It is alway good to challenge information one receives, but some folks are really deep in their "fiter bubble" and don't even realize it.

This is one of your coolest videos yet. I've been working in defense on the private sector side of things for a few years now and I love it, but your job was definitely way cooler! Thank you so much for sharing this!

That was incredible. Very informative and inspiring. Keep up the amazing work!

I am jealous of your job. Not just because you get to shoot mini-guns and stuff, but because you get to take them apart and make them better. I've done some work in the military communications side of things, which is pretty cool still, but tinkering with a Javelin system would be freaking awesome.

Greg

Destin, you still should charge us. The work is no less, on the clock or not. Just my opinion. As a long retired member of the contractor employee for the DoD, I understand the desire to build the best tools for the warfighter. Thank you for doing your best possible work.

Hey Destin! Great video, especially the summation. It's ok to share on social media, right?
