Just watched something on the taofledermous channel where they were talking about blunt body concept that NASA was researching. Would be really interesting to see some schelrin photos of the stacked objects they made for the shotgun. https://youtu.be/n_UQVvZtBOs

DESTIN! SlowMo Guys just clocked glass breaking at Mach 4.2! Slow-mo Schlieren opportunity!

Jeff Dzado

The bullet has a tailwind from the muzzle blast; as that dies down and the bullet gets out into essentially still air its airspeed (which is measured relative to the surrounding air) suddenly increases to its speed over ground (give or take wind).

I love the firearm related stuff. Keep it coming

Isaac Bagwell

So I assume that the shockwave on the bullet doesn’t happen until a few inches away from the muzzle because the surrounding gases are also traveling at high speeds? Is going supersonic a relative thing?

Jason Williamson

Excellent stuff, as usual. Don't worry about apologizing for your use of firearms in your videos. We're patrons because we love what you do. Just keep doing what you do. #rockon

Brian Garrett

I'm all ears, how do I avoid this? Does it put the video description in the email?

Smarter Every Day

After he met the astronaut he asked if he could just ride his normal bike. Of course you can't say no to that so i'm pretty sure he cannot ride the backwards bike anymore.

Smarter Every Day

I love your fluid mechanics vids. It is like watching the Lego movie.

Grzegorz Kapica

Small suggestion don't make the patreon email have to the scroll so far for the check it out button.

Christopher Buteau

You shouldn't have to apologize for appreciating firearms, they aren't inherently evil.

Very interesting! But my favorite part might have been seeing your son helping make dinner -- they grow up so fast! Does he still know how to ride the backwards bicycle? Was he able to retain the ability to ride both (unlike you) at the same time?

While I get the fascination with firearms, I liked your cat and insect videos better: Please more of those!

Andreas Junghanns

Whilst I have personally never felt your videos involving firearms have glorified them, I do appreciate the caveat you have included at the start of this video to clarify why you find studying projectiles so interesting. There's certainly no suppressing your enthusiasm for getting smarter every day!

Daniel Turner

This was so extremely cool and really insightful. Never really thought about how a suppressor would work but what you showed makes sense. The grains of propellent in front of the bullet is an interesting side effect I wouldn't have expected either. Thanks for the hard work!
